Author Topic: Birthday present for a bloke that thinks he's got pretty much everything  (Read 8060 times)

Sorry!  I wrongly assumed your suggestion involved petrol.

Thanks all for the contributions, all interesting stuff. Thus far all interesting suggestions fall under the "bin there/done that/got one of those" with the exception of the (Lea Valley) Velodrome which was on the list. It's a landmark one which is why I'm going the extra few bytes.

Oh, wow.

Ziplining.
Glider flight.
Dolphin watching boat trip.

+1 for glider flight (but then I'm an aeroplane geek).

Although avoid the one off red letter* type ones which only give you one launch, if the weather is a bit rubbish (no thermals) then you go up and straight back down again.

My local club (and I am sure others do similar) does a day membership in which they ensure you get at least three launches and you are bit more involved, pushing the gliders around and helping with the winch etc. The idea is that you get hooked (pun intended) and join for a full course but it's a decent full day out rather than a slightly disappointing up and back down - especially for a significant birthday.

*generally I avoid the red letter type stuff for most things, you can always get stuff direct and I think the club/organiser appreciates you for it and they are getting your full money rather than a 10% surcharge back to Red Letter

Perhaps your birthday present should be to give away some of the Everything you already have. Not only would this be A Good Deed, it would open the possibility of getting newer! shinier! Everythings in the future.
Riding a concrete path through the nebulous and chaotic future.

A container to store all the everything you already have in.

Hmph. Next you'll be suggesting I need to tidy up after myself.

FTR, a glider session was indeed something from a previous iteration which I enjoyed tremendously and have earmarked for continuation at such time as I have more time

Get a musical instrument and learn to play it

A hedge laying course.
Unfortunately only available from Nov - Feb normally.

Mrs Q and I tend to buy each other opportunities to learn skills rather than stuff.  So far we've done sheep shearing (both of us), hedge laying (me), nalbinding - a sort of Viking knitting (Mrs Q), spinning and dyeing (Mrs Q), fruit tree pruning (me).

Also, bungee jumps.

Not sure where your friend is based but they have some good value courses at The Earth Trust in Little Wittenham, Oxfordshire.

Wascally Weasel and I are going to be making axes later on this year.  If that's not something that makes your vital bits tingle, you're probably past saving.

Having watched cutlers at work once upon a time, I'd be interested.

I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

It's going to be *amazing*.  I want an axe to carve with, WW wants something more... combat oriented.  Either way, Nic Westermann is one of the most respected bladesmiths in the country and I'm very much looking forward to it.

Depending on budget, bike building course like this?

Or (significantly more affordable) maybe a wheelbuilding one?

Would anyone like a small coffee table? Handy thing here is that you can rent out the workshop and tools by the half day.
