Recharging Li-Ion 18650 batteries
« on: 15 June, 2017, 02:47:40 pm »
I've got a "smart charger" that I use for AA and AAA rechargeables - it is ok to use it for 18650 batteries or do I need a specialised charger?

You need a specialised charger.  Completely different voltage, completely different chemistry.

They are also a bit longer and fatter than AAs, so probably won't fit in your charger anyway.

There is a risk of them catching fire or exploding, so maybe put the charger in a metal tin, and keep an eye on it.

When charging Li-ion battery packs I put 'em in a fireplace, just in case.

Top tip: Best to do this when the fire's not lit.

Seriously folks, these things are not to be messed around with. If I was allowed I would post some very scary videos taken at $current_job

And if you have 4-or-more in close proximity ... well, best to use someone else's fireplace for that experiment.

There are some li-on chargers that charge NIMH batteries. Something like the Nitecore D series is great.
