I wouldn't use WD40 on anything that's going to be handled; it smells nasty and you would need to clean off any oily residue.

I quite like the smell and it saved the life of my youngest child who managed to draw on the screen of our at the time quite new flatscreen telly with biro. WD-40 and toilet paper. I don't recommend it , I am particularly concerned about the effect on anti glare coatings, but it did the trick

For stickies on the outside of passports I use hand-cleaning gel.

I have a similar problem: a while back I used double-sided tape to hold together the scarf joint of a guitar neck so that I could take measurements for a new neck.  I'm now thinking of re-using the existing neck, but the tape has left the usual nasty residue.

I now need not only to remove the residual goo but leave the surfaces clean enough to take new glue, so anything I use on the goo must totally disappear afterwards. Duh.

David has just come down, whinging about the sticker glue goo on HIS passport, so I'm not alone.
Says IPA was ineffective, white spirit a bit better.
We hadn't discussed the matter...
...or maybe we had, but it only became an issue to him now!

"Peel-easy" medical adhesive remover .... in small aerosol cans - used for removing sticking plaster/adhesive bandages, colostomy and urostomy pouches from the skin.

Gentle, no smell and highly effective at removing most sticky residues.

Just found my old passport.  Still got the old stickers on, including one that says "remove this label". Life is too short.

Before breaking out the oil or other fluids, try masking tape or cellophane.  Stick it on, pull up quickly; some of the goo may stick to it.  Repeat.  Standard practice at our dwelling for removing price stickers, etc.

+1 Likewise my preferred method for removing unwanted adhesive residue from stuff.  I find Scotch brand "invisible" sticky tape about the best, sufficiently tacky to lift the residue, but not sticky enough to leave its own residue.  A method requiring patience.
