Anyone been to..
« on: 11 January, 2018, 12:50:55 pm »
The powers that be are considering an 'oliday later in the year and the Indian Ocean has come under the spotlight, namely Mauritius or the Maldives or the Seychelles or Sri Lanka.

Would be interested in first hand experiences of any or all of the above or maybe elsewhere in the region.

I did go to a Maldive once, for a couple of hours, in the middle of the night, in 1974.  I learned that tea made with evaporated milk is foulness personified.

Inlaw Paw was there during the War. Much malaria, hence the name. Zika nowadays.

Try Mozambique, namely Bazaruto Island:

superb resort, excellent food and one of the best fishing spots in the world (lots to do if fishing is not your thing)

Another very good resort is Umngazi River Bungalows in South Africa (I have been here 11 times, and it is my families favourite holiday resort):

Macedonia is a fantastic place for a holiday. It's a good time of year to go to Marrakesh (Morocco), or if you're into post-soviet architecture how about Moldova?

I'd recommend Mauritius - after 6 consecutive annual winter holidays in Barbados we went to Mauritius.

The weather (late Feb) has pretty humid but a gentle breeze not unlike Barbados kept it all very pleasant.  The deal we had was 17 days all inclusive - we flew Business* with the total trip price almost exactly the same as to Barbados in Economy.

Nah ... a vaccination won't help you .... maybe you need  some penicillin?

jokes aside though, Umngazi is also not in the malaria zone

I'm not really sure about wheelchair access as there are some steep sandy inclines when you go from the resort to the beach or river (the river runs adjacent to the resort and runs into the sea .... best is contact them and ask them if they have ramps etc (I cannot recall seing any)

The resort is on the Wild Coast (away from the major towns etc) but you can take a fly-in package and the plane (6 seater cessna) lads at the resort

The food is amazing, and all 3 meals are included in the daily tariff.... The Pound is also very strong against the South African Rand.

I have drunk tea on Foulness several times. It dod not taste of the Maldives. I have also drunk beer there. That tasted of beer.

Mr Larrington is correct in his use of the singular "a Maldive". The plural is of course "Mauxdives".
