Garmin 810 stuck on diagnostic screen
« on: 02 February, 2018, 11:01:31 am »
Started my Garmin up this morning and it went straight into the diagnostic pages on the unit, I've tried hard reset, plugging it in to the PC but still the same result. I don't think any of the buttons are sticking as they all make it bleep ok when pressed.

Any advice?

I read that one earlier but didn't really give me any information.

Anyway I reformatted the Garmin and did another hard reset, which worked.  ;D

the time is now 6 hours out but that might sort itself out whilst riding home.

If you have only turned it in inside I would be tempted to take it outside, turn it on & let it find some satellites. It may then figure out the real time.
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Take it outside somewhere in your garden for 10 mins and it’ll find the satellites and correct the internal clock.

It never updated itself on the ride home tonight but it was the correct time once downloaded to Strava.

Has it lost the time zone map?
It uses this to convert the GPS time to local time.

Connect it to a PC, and browse to: Garmin Edge 810 > Garmin.
There will be a bunch of folders in here ( Activities, Courses, etc etc ), but there should also be a file called gmaptz.img.

If this is missing, it might be the cause of the problem.
Use Garmin Express or the Web Updater have a sniff, and see if it offers to install it.
Otherwise, report back and we can get you a copy of this file.

You have to wonder about a GPS receiver that doesn't default to something UTCish if it doesn't know what time zone it's in...   ::-)

My guess was based on the fact that Garmin are based in Olathe, KS, USA which is currently 6 hours behind us.
So I wondered if in the absence of Time Zone information, it defaulted to that time zone.

Hmm, I just tried renaming-away that file.
The device booted up and got the time zone right, but the Daylight Saving wrong.
It thinks it's an hour later that it is.

I think there's another file which it uses to maintain the last position / time to assist with getting a quicker fix.
I can't remember what file that is, but I expect a full reset deletes it.
I suspect if I delete that, I may be able to repro the 6-hour time shift.
