Seat Stay Mounted Rear Light
« on: 03 April, 2018, 12:40:13 pm »
Hi All

Just built up the new Summer/Audax bike.

It's come up quite well but I now think I won't bother with a rear rack.   I have an Altura wedge pack which can carry a rear light but I'm not a fan of bag-mounted rear lights.   There's also no space on the seatpin.

Can anyone recommend a rear light that will fit on the seat stays ?

Thanks

Rob

Cateye make, or at least used to make, a seatstay bracket

As an alternative solution, could you fit an Exposure light with one of those saddle rail brackets and then mount your seatpack below that?

Fit a short dyamo front light bracket to your rear brake calliper, then you can fit just about any light you fancy.  I do that on my fixed wheel which is only used with a saddle pack and no carrier.  https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/lighting-spares/busch-muller-light-bracket-for-caliper-brakes-short/

When I looked into this, I thought the Busch & Müller Secula was among the most attractive options whether dynamo or battery powered. It includes a reflector, which in practical terms means I don’t worry about the lamp going out while on the road, since the reflector is nearly as visible as a lamp to drivers.

Unfortunately they fail in the rain.  Mine lasted a shorter time that I did on this year's Easter Arrow, and that's saying something.  My saddlebag-mounted Cateye worked perfectly but I also like a light attached to the seat stay.  I'd made a mental note to look for a suitable Cateye model.
The present is a foreign country: they do things differently here.

I use two of the suggestions above: cateye and secula.  Both work fine for angled mounting on a seatstay

I use a seat-stay mounted Secula as my primary, and as back-up I have two seat-stay mountings for 1/2 watt Smarts.
As the Smarts are rarely, if ever, used I load them with Lithium AAA which last significant numbers of years, and improve the waterproofness of the casings with a wrap of insulating tape around the join.  Not perfect, but enough layers of redundancy.   In fact the Smarts have seen more use being loaned out to other riders who have been 'caught short'.  They have the advantage of being also able to be clipped to bag or clothing in extremis.

Unfortunately the rather better designed Radial Cycles clone of the Smart comes only with a Seatpost mount (and is currently out of stock anyway).

I had a thread on here about this recently too. I ended up with two B&M secular lights, one battery, one dynamo. The combo works well. When bushing the bike up a steep hill in the dark this week the dynamo want enough to keep the lights fully bright, so I flicked on the battery one, and the pair were great.

Only complaint is the battery life is a bit short.

I have just finished building up an audax bike and have put these on the seat stays either side

One of https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00452O6LI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And one of http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cateye-omni-5-rear-light/

Not used the bike in the wet or the dark yet so I don't have any views on how good (or otherwise) they are.

I've got the older Cygolite Hotshot, and I've been using it for 2 1/2 years.... mine also works whilst connected to a powerbank (so it's good for Audax etc) .... Battery life is very good even after 2 1/2 years.
