Trees
« on: 29 June, 2011, 03:25:32 pm »
The first few were taken at Hawkstone Park on Sunday

Now the next two or three show a Common Beech, and what a beauty it is. It was like standing inside a living cathedral looking up next to the trunk.

Sadly, we now have a section of Beeches down here in Brighton that have received the dreaded orange spot of doom, that will eventually mean they will be felled. These were taken in February of this year, and at the latter part of June, still remain. But for how long? They are still producing a full crown of leaves. We will never see their like again I fear.  :'(

Some have already given up the ghost:

There are a few good workbenches in that for someone.

I like trees

One of our soldiers is down. Brought down in the recent high winds, and must have made a hell of a racket. Last February I photographed a number of Beeches near to us that have accepted the 'orange spot'. I guess here's the reason why:

Tha's caused by a Ganoderma fungus, fruiting body apparent to the left of the orange spot. Hard to to tell which species, although Ganoderma applanatum would be consistent with the rot.

This seems apt on the subject of trees:

I am spoilt for choice, what with owning a wood and everything.  But here's one I took at the weekend on the Welsh borders - a different take on the subject.

There's a tree at Long Eaton train station, and I've often wondered what on earth made it grow as it has. I've seen bamboo trained to do this, but not a tree...

I don't know what made it grow like that, but it reminds me of a tree in Bath's Hedgmead Park which has a branch growing out of one side and back into the trunk. I'll try to remember to take my camera next time I'm there.

Not a pic, but a website that links to the remarkable Moringa tree that can still flourish in drought conditions.

One of Nature's survivors. Seen yesterday going down Clappers Lane near Fulking. Can't quite see how it's managing to hang on, but think this is magnificent.

Lovely little female Horse Chestnut festooned with flowers at the end of May. On one of those rare (or so it seems this year) stunningly warm days when you just want it to last for ever, and you want to ride all day. Oh, and you can see where I was. No clues.
