not today but had an amazing trip to Botswana and South Africa last month - there's an album of my favourite 40 here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsm89vaXP

(how much was down to having the right kit and being driven to the right place?  Quite a lot, to be honest.)

Stunning pics Mike, I particularly like the monkey who seems to have followed the "look this way and say cheese" instruction and the line of drinking antelope (I think).

What had the bird of prey caught?

good question.. it's not definite, but you can see the umbilical cord in one pic so the guide thought it was a stillborn lion  (it's an eagle owl)

(how much was down to having the right kit and being driven to the right place?  Quite a lot, to be honest.)

Some great shots of birds with various meals.
My Dad is a bird photographer and I know just how gear-dependent that is, razor-sharpness is everything and that doesn't come cheap.
However camera gear never decided to fly out to Botswana or sit in a Hide for hours/days at a time waiting.  It still needs a photographer.

Luckily, for my wallet, it's not a branch of the hobby that interests me although I love looking at the images from people who do it. (Not even my own father will lend me his Canon 300mm f/2.8 II)
I expect anyone who does it has a different level of respect for the people who film for the Attenborough programmes*

*Their unbelievable level of quality makes it very difficult to compete with on the "Wow" factor of course.

Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

I saw a "the making of" one of the attenborough programmes and a fella did a 60 hour stint in a hide waiting for an eagle.
The reason these guys are so good is that they have the knowledge. They've researched the bird in advance and know it will come at some point.
My inability to sit waiting patiently for a bird is largely due to the fact I don't know for certain it will even come at all!
I went to a hide a bit ago and there were some other photographers who knew for a fact a barn owl was living in a nest box, so I waited an hour for it and got a shot. Not a very good shot, but satisfying all the same. That hour didn't feel as long as 10 minutes somewhere random that I don't know anything will come.
I've worked out that I have more satisfaction trying to get spectacular shots of run of the mill birds, than run of the mill shots of spectacular birds.

Why I despise phone cameras:

That bit of refraction through ice crystals would have been much better on a real camera.

Yeah, but would you have had your real camera with you? That image beats no image.

Shot out the back window after a mad dash indoors to get a camera as rain began to fall:

Wee Panny's showing its age - it's not all that happy at ISO 400.

I'm showing my age - I really wanted to write 400 ASA.

Exploring the rockscapes at Pathhead, Kirkcaldy!

I think I'm getting the hang of my new Canon 750D now! All shot using the kit 18-55mm lens.

Today we were at Battleby for a conference. I went for an amble with two of the PhD students and we had fun with macro pics in the woodland.

And as a leaf gives up, it is the thin parts that go first. Very fortunate to find this leaf with the veins still a bit green with the sun behind.

Experimenting with a technique I stumbled upon for "faking" a ND filter, https://patdavid.net/2013/09/faking-nd-filter-for-long-exposure.html,
I had a go of averaging together fifteen, 1 second exposures to get a nice long exposure, sans ND filter:

One of the exposures:

And the fifteen blended together using imagemagick on the command line, the sharpened up in Gimp:

Storage heavy, but at least always an option if you don't have an ND filter to hand!  :)

Great photos LEE.

I need to save the pennies for some ND filters for my Hitech filter system... Certainly easier to get long exposures done in camera using filters than blending together 30 odd individual exposures...

Or get a bit of welding glass for £1.50

Gentle meander up Corrie Fee to set up some camera traps. The antlers were left after a cull - the gralloch was nearby and the antlers were sawn off. As they are one point short of a sub-royal, does that make my colleague 'knobber of the glen'?

(Actually 8+ is a spiker, 6+ is a knobber. It was funny whilst it lasted.)

I use a 77mm Hoya Pro 10 stop (PROND 1000) .  It has very little, if any, colour-cast.  I'm very impressed with it.

I bought some step-down adapters from Ebay for about £5 so I can used it on smaller diameter lenses.

Certainly worth a bash for a few quid.  Then epoxy it to a large stepping ring? http://www.thephotoforum.com/threads/how-to-diy-10-stop-nd-filter-with-welding-glass-under-20.361479/

I wonder how good the SRB ND1000 filters are for around £35 (for a cokin P holder?)
