I do find this all quite amazing really. I mean they are something that most people aren't even aware exist, yet there are so many different types, shapes and styles. I suppose they would employ specialist designers, but something so perfunctory as a water tower you would assume to be a std shape/method of construction, but no, they are all different, each water board/local authority must employ an architect and basically give them a free hand, but with a budget constraint. All rather fascinating really, I wish now, I had been a water tower Architect, instead of pissing about with designing houses and nursing homes. :'(
-
I remember seeing one in Hungary that was a large metal sphere on top of a tall metal tower. Looked rather pleasing but at the same time a little spooky.

A photo that reminds me very much of my year in "mid-west" America.
Although we Brits grow up on a diet of glossy US Cop dramas, set in glossy cities, I found most of it looked a lot like this, for mile..after mile...after mile......over the horizon.

We stayed in the House in the Clouds. I abseiled down from the top to a lower window wearing a dry suit over my DJ and a dotted white line across my bonce. It was a London Tube Stations themed party.
I had two mates who knew about ropes hanging on to me from the top.

Tripod. Definitely.
No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinised and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinise the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. With infinite complacency men went to and fro over this globe about their little affairs, serene in their assurance of their empire over matter. It is possible that the infusoria under the microscope do the same. No one gave a thought to the older worlds of space as sources of human danger, or thought of them only to dismiss the idea of life upon them as impossible or improbable.

I tried to take a photo of Park Hill Water Tower in Croydon (https://goo.gl/maps/7rL2sP7ddjr), on Saturday, but couldn't get very close. The park was actually closed, because there was a stag deer in it! This is the best shot I could get, from a footpath adjacent to the park.
(http://balius.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk/~timo/stuff/small.php?size=512&file=ParkHillWaterTower_20150927.jpg) (http://balius.sp.ph.ic.ac.uk/~timo/stuff/ParkHillWaterTower_20150927.jpg)
I may go back and see if they've got rid of the deer yet, but I'll use a different route, as Water Tower Hill is at least 1 in 10, albeit for a very short distance. I had to get off and walk, since I simply couldn't turn the pedals on the single speed commuter! That's the only hill that has defeated me on a single speed, other than Ditchling Beacon, which is significantly longer.

The guidebook is buried deep within The Luggage but IIRC it was a perfectly normal but surplus to requirements water tower on a ranch, which the owner of a truck stop /diner / business that needed advertising bought and transported (whole!) some eighty miles to its current location next to Route 66 / I-40

Looks like I may be about to be involved in a project to decommission a water tower, :'( I won't say which until the project is confirmed and announced publicly as the tower in question is likely to be a local landmark.
-
Do you know why, generally speaking, water towers have fallen out of favour? The principle – reducing the maximum pumping capacity required to service peak demand – seems sound.
-
IMHO The improved efficiency of variable speed pumps and improved telemetry.
Historically pumps were either on or off and pumped a set volume. Water towers provide a small reservoir at height to ensure the mains pressure is appropriate and when the level reaches a set point the pumps come on to refill the tower / meet the instantaneous demand that was causing the tower level to drop. Pumping power to meet full demand was therefore always there unless like the American ones shown above they are huge. Their main purpose was to ensure the pressure to meet small demands e.g. overnight which are too small for it to be desirable to require the pumps to run and when the pumps did run there was sufficient volume to fill that they would run for a sensible amount of time.
Now you can sit a booster pump at the low level reservoir and a pressure gauge in the network and the pump can run slowly to meet a trickling demand and then step up at 7am when everyone gets up and has their morning shower.
The other killer is maintaining towers that in the UK are often designed to obscure their purpose, so ornate, and are now quite old. As the tower has to be able to vent air in and out as it empties/fills they also present a point at which contamination can occur, pity the poor sod who has to climb out on the top to ensure the vent is both clear and the cover in place.

Or just a viewing platform? In Nykarleby, Finland (not far from where I was born) there is a large water tower with a restaurant and observation deck at the top. They even had a few binoculars lying on the windowsills in the 1990s, although those were gone the last time I was there.

Shropshire Grand Design.
The builder's portaloo and the fact it was fenced off suggest the conversion isn't quite finished yet.
Or perhaps the architect forgot to include indoor upstairs lavatorial facilities.

The newer Headless Cross[1] water tower looking splendid in the winter sun. This is the one that looks like a radio telescope from Weatheroak Hill.
[1] As nikki OTP points out, isn't a headless cross basically a stick?

I wonder what the plan is for access /egress when the power is off.

We'll if it was mine I’d have a fireman’s pole down the middle bit, not much use for getting back in again but who cares when you’ve got a fireman’s pole!

Getting closer requires crossing a busy dual cabbageway, it was far too hot to indulge in pedestrianism and I'd been awake for far too long, so I didn't try.

Ah, me hum bin thinkin' they is recent.
-
All the ones I've posted in the last couple of weeks were posted on the day they were taken. I was on the road for two weeks before arriving in Battle Mountain. Chicago -> St Louis, follow the Missouri up to Montana, across the mountains, down the Clearwater/Snake/Columbia rivers to the Pacific Coast and then down to Battle Mountain. Returning to BRITAIN from Seattle in a couple of weeks time.
-
Ah, didn’t realize you were back out there again. ;)
