Audax doubles
« on: 16 January, 2019, 09:39:37 pm »
Now, I know a few people have done the Brevet Cymru-Porkers double. but what others are there?

I know a couple of riders in 2015 rode Everybody Rides to Skeggy, then nipped across to Poynton to ride the Plains 300, and this double is on again this year.

This popped into my head when I noted that Mr Corless was running his Knock Ventoux 300 on Sunday the 28th of April. It's an unusual day to run a 300, but it does make it possible for an enterprising rider to ride my Beyond the Dales We Know 300, then knock off the more-or-less 100 km to Burnley and get a couple of hours' kip before starting the Knock Ventoux.

Knock Ventoux was paired with a 200 in the Dales the day after if I recall correctly, is this no longer the case?

There I was, thinking that an audax double was someone who rode your PBP qualifiers for you in your name so you didn't have to bother.

Not this year! The Knock Ventoux 300/Tan Hill 200 double isn't on this time but will doubtless run again at some point. IIRC 5 riders did the double last year!

This year's Knock Ventoux 300 has been set for Sunday 28 April 2019, acting as a 300 km PBP qualifier http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/19-87/

The Tan Hill 200 has been set for Sunday 11 August 2019, 1-week before PBP http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/19-231/

Ooh, that reminds me of the Mosstrooper 300/Chevy Chase 200. That was a tough weekend - only four of us did the double.

Who would dream of such a thing?? (Probably only an audaxer on a world tour during PBP qualifying. Which would just be bad planning, surely?)

We do have a local rider who has been known to enter and ride events in his son's name </proud father>

Easter Arrow / Double Dutch 200 (which is always Easter Saturday)

IGMC as don't riders have to be in York at 0800 on Saturday?

If I was to do a qualifying series, the 200 in winter would be my major obstacle... and I don't see why in order to ride in August one has to prove is in good form in February. I wonder how folks in Finland manage...  ::-)

Luckily, I am not too bothered about doing PBP...

Doing LWL (4/5 May) and Herts So Good 200km (6 May) this year

You don't have to. A first ride on 28 April could see you qualify.

There are folk in the southern hemisphere who finished qualifying before Christmas. Silly but possible.

So why the blurb on the PBP leaflet released in 2018 talks of a 200 qualifying window ending in March?

If you mean this bit:
Quote
For example, we are suggesting the following schedule
to regional brevet administrators in France:

BRM 200 KM
FROM FEBRUARY 23
TO MARCH 12

I guess the answer is - we aren't in France and it is only a suggestion.

Some of us used regularly to ride the Mad March 200 followed by the Cheltenham Flyer over a weekend.

The most audacious/stupid was a Saturday Elenith 300 followed by a Hard Boiled 300 starting at 0200 on Sunday morning.

I'm older & wiser now.

Both rides that intrigued me last year - so I was excited to see them on the same week in 2019 .... until I looked into the details (time and geography) and realised the double would be pretty epic

I think you've got some shorter Saturday options which would make getting to Burnley more feasible (sans voiture); but the whole Aprés Brevet ambience of your event appeals far too much to waste the night dashing around t'North :P

on one of my first 200s I travelled back on the train from Pam's event, there were a few old hands heading for El Supremo's 200 the next day; they said back to back 200s every weekend throughout the season was ideal prep for PBP

never got the chance to test the theory

I've entered 3 Down (300) on 6th April and The Shark (200) on the 7th April. Should be good fun, I think...

I rode the Elenith/Hardboiled double once. It was a tricky one because the Hardboiled started an hour before the finish control of the Elenith closed. I did another 300/300 double the same month, East Midlands Meander from Nottingham and Scottish Borders from Galashiels. Hardest double I ever did was 403 miles in the 2014 Mersey 24 hour followed by the Highlands, Glens and Islands 1300km which started the next morning on the Isle of Arran and enjoyed unusually hot weather.

Only eight Frenchman have done the ultimate Audax double. Back in 1971, they finished PBP Audax in the afternoon and the next morning, they started (and finished) PBP Randonneur. Two PBPs in a week.

Since then, PBP Audax stayed on a five year schedule but PBP Randonneur shifted to every four years. In 1991, the PBPs were run simultaneously, so no chance to ride them back to back. In 2011, several folk rode both brevets but there was a fallow week in between.

In 2005, Richard Leon did Madrid-Gijon-Madrid 1200 and LEL back to back. I think there was a travel/ LEL registration day between them though. In 2009, John Evans did Gold Rush 1200, Super-Brevet Scandinavia 1200 and LEL in consecutive weeks. Impressive considering travel times, jet lag and riding a fixed wheel for all of them.

Not in the same league but some AUKs did a 400+ Easter Arrow and Buckingham Blinder 400 on successive days a while ago.
Wheel meet again, don't know where, don't know when...

When there were Audax rides out of Tavistock I recall Teethgrinder riding Moor Like a 400 and then going straight into a 200km the following day, having topped and tailed this with rides to and from Milton Keynes.

In 2005, Richard Leon did Madrid-Gijon-Madrid 1200 and LEL back to back. I think there was a travel/ LEL registration day between them though.

We had two separate interviews with Richard in the 2005 LEL film, one at Thorne, at 1.58 in this video,
and one at Langdon Beck, at 17.04 in this video.
