i have flat pedals (wellgo) on my hack/runabout bike, which does 3-4000km a year. no problem wearing any type of shoes and a nice safety feature is integrated reflectors. i can see the marks from pins on the soles of my "smart" shoes, but wouldn't call them chewed. i still much prefer the spd/-sl type pedals for sporty kind of riding.

I went for the XT T8000s and a pair of Giro traineresque shoes in the sale, and fitted them earlier.
They went on easily enough and after 3 iterations I think I’ve got the cleats lined up well enough to venture beyond the street. I’ve never used SPDs before, and they feel quite different to the crank brothers I’m used to.
The pinned side holds my foot well enough for the more utility end of that bikes use.
And I like how both pedals and shoes look, so that’s a plus. Thanks for all the advice.
