We climb out of the bleaklands after about 125km into rolling, hedge-strewn countryside ....

Climb. CLIMB!  Oh my goodness.  Get the 'granny ring' sorted!

It's a big one, too: 30m over 6km before falling again and rising sharply to 60m over 2km — it's heady stuff indeed!!  :o

Is there EOL ?

I've been kind and let a few special people in...SAE, form and payment on the day.

Talking of which, where's the best place to lock up my bike at the pub / restaurant?

At the 'Jalsa' there's a beer garden to the left where we usually lock up.

More importantly than all the other posts, will there be TdF coverage at Arrivee?

Enjoy the odour at the bottom of the steep little ramp not long after Houghton Conquest.....it should wake most up. I laughed that it is named Maggot hill on Strava.

Looking forward to this. If anyone from the Derby/Notts area is looking for a lift I can take one more bike and person in my car. PM me if you're stuck for transport.

GPS USERS NOTE  I was just looking thru the latest routesheet and noticed that three of the info controls have moved in this latest version — not by much, but by enough that if you rely solely on my GPS waypoints/cuepoints then you will be looking in the wrong places.  I've updated the GPS files (both GPX and TCX) to reflect the changes (11am Weds).  My apologies for pushing another change, I felt it was rather important to get the info control locations correct, as several will be visited in the dark and we don't want anyone missing out, now, do we?!  ::-)  If you're relying on my GPS routes, make sure you're using the latest, please.

Of course routesheet users* and wannabe-Luddites can ignore this  ;)

That's high.

Third Class degree is usually 40% and after that you can have a BSc in some 'ology' after your name!

Not sure if I missed an updated link from wilkyboy somewhere, however I've been working from this one: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/8157148

I haven't checked them all yet, but the position of the first control is some way out on this route as it is shown in Market street. The notes say, "This year NOT a free control but manned at the 24 hour Esso garage on the Histon Road." Which I believe is at: N52 13.129 E0 06.681

You may wish to amend your GPS route accordingly, lord knows I'm going to be relying on my GPS more than usual for this one!

You are well behind the curve.  Version C was uploaded just recently precisely because of the discrepancy you mention.

Yes: you're using the wrong URL, that's an earlier version of the route.

If you check the page Tom has linked to, http://www.camaudax.uk/rides/hereward-the-wake-300/, that links to http://ridewithgps.com/events/Hereward-the-Wake-300-audax, which in turn links to http://ridewithgps.com/routes/8807879, which is the best version I have.  This version does reflect this year's mandatory manned control at the Esso garage on Histon Road, as well as the slightly moved locations of info controls since the route-check last Friday.  The 3x100km routes are all derived directly from the 300km full route.  Also, all the GPX/TCX files on that page are the latest, too.

I don't usually create multiple versions of a route, but in this instance I did, and I can't remember why

Hi Wilky boy

The first route had distance errors due to bugs in Ride With GPS.  You corrected those for the second route.  Then finally corrected for controls being in slightly different places than on the route sheet.

Thanks for reminding me freeflow, that was indeed the case.

FWIW, for those who are into mappery and such like, it appears to be a bug in RideWithGPS in that if you leave a route in Edit mode overnight (which I do from time to time, as I face-plant my keyboard around pumpkin time  ::-)) then it magically gains distance by the morning.  RWGPS are aware of this.  It makes not one single iota of a difference to the route itself, except that the total distance appears to be over by a couple of kms.  There's a standard fix, which is to waggle all the control points, forcing a recalculation on each segment, which is both time-consuming, dull, and means all the cuepoints have to be recreated; RWGPS themselves have a big red button to do this for them.  I saved the previous version of Hereward to see if I could script up a GPX-checker to see whether a specific route suffered from this particular issue before I published it — realising the problem is there in a specific route is half the battle.  The current routes now don't suffer from this overdistance — 309km is what I expect we will ride on the road, as it's close enough to what we rode last year, although Fidgetbuzz and I did add on a 6km detour due to chatting too much and ignoring the GPS in the dark   (my GPS recorded 316km including the detour)

Flashing rear lights are banned on PBP, so lets all get into the Steady habit this weekend  :D.

Article 8 : Rules for Bikes

<snip>
Bikes must possess a lighting system powerful enough to be seen at a distance of 100 m from the front and 150 m from the rear. It must be securely and permanently fixed on the bike, even during daytime, and in working order at all times. Flashing LEDs at the rear are forbidden. Backup lighting systems are strongly recommended.</snip>

Thanks Nick for GPS update - I've posted it back into Facebook group too as there were links to old versions there.

And yes, in anticipation of PBP I am back on dynamo lights and a nice steady rear B&M affixed to a rack. Could be 'interesting' going back to the Cyo60 after an Exposure Strada.

But I thought everyone would be following you!

Agree with your comments on flashing rear lights, particularly when riding in a group; why?

Looking at the weather forecast, mudguards would appear a little surplus to requirements.
