Title: Borders of Belgium 1000 2016
Post by: Cycling Daddy on 25 January, 2016, 08:11:47 am
I have just registered for this.  Insanity since I have been off my bike for several months but time to work towards being able to do this.  Anyone else going?

Hallo Gallo!

So if I can regain fitness it shall be this.

You are not allowed to detour to the gelateria in Vaals? I shall speak with the organiser!

Bairdy's Rolling Roadblock of Rock will be patrolling the Belgian borders, any requests for tunes on the ipod must reach me no later than two weeks before the start of the ride.
Hallo Gallo is already on the playlist.

I am considering triding this on 3 wheels rather than 2.  Has anyone had any experience of trying to take tikes onto ferries?  Les

Ferries are the lesser problem if you plan on using a trike. The route consists of a lot of converted railroads, nicely flat but with barriers preventing cars driving on them. On 2-wheels these barriers can be a nuisance, on a 3 wheels they are a problem.
A superb route but beware the Ardennes, make sure you have a nice time buffer before you enter the Ardennes.

3rd edition now, I gave it a try in 2012, Jedrik rode it in 2014 and now it's on again. So indeed, every 2 years.

A superb route but beware the Ardennes, make sure you have a nice time buffer before you enter the Ardennes.

In 2014, 2 velomobiles showed up at the starting line. Gabriële Patzner and a fellow German. The guy (I think his name is Hajo) made in 47.5 hours and was the second finisher. Gabriële had it difficult in the Ardennes, but finished extremely well in just under 71 hours. Neither gave remarks about difficulties to pass any barriers.
Needless to mention that both of them were very well prepared and riding a velomobile is a habit for them.
I ride a ICE trike but not that much. I did a 200 last year and that went well, but I will be thinking twice about riding the Borders of Belgium with my trike. Maybe on a 2-wheeled recumbent (like 4 other riders in 2014)...

Gabi discussed the Ardennes part of the route with me as a preparation. One of the themes of the discussion was where the barriers are located so she could prepare a detour for that part. But most of the tricky parts she had done before so she knew the critical oints ;).

From what has been said the route can obviously be done on a trike but there are questions about whether this is wise of efficient.  I have posted about this elsewhere since I do not wish to derail the thread.  https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=95641.msg1982781#msg1982781 many thanks for c ontributions thus far.

If my plans to be fitter and faster work out, I'll do this.
The website says entry is possible until the last minute but the hotel booking option is limited to 20 riders. But the "back to basics" version would suit me more anyway as i'd prefer the breaks to be at distances different from those offered. So i'll make my own bookings.
This will be my big audax of the year, and i hope the trans-Norway ride to NordKapp will give me the endurance - the increase in speed is a different matter .

I will probably get a train to Dover on Wed 31/8, then ride 150k from Calais (or less from Dunkirk) to the start.
Then ride back to Bruges (50k or so) on Sunday 4/9, stop overnight for beer and chips, ride/train home on Monday 5/9.

140k from Dunkirk to the start, with the prevailing wind.

Both options can be done by train as well. For Dunkirk it's best to cycle to the first Belgian railwaystation at De Panne.

tentative strong interest here. Looking at train fares yada yada ...

I've just heard that the start is 1400h (2pm). That's ... unusual!

So I guess 5pm finish. Which is nice in some ways, as it means a relaxed evening, eat/drink/shower/craic/bed in some proportions according to fatigue level. No travelling to bother with.

EDIT: With such a late start, I could get there by train from Oxfordshire on the day! But that seems a bit stressful, and I note it's just outside Ghent:
So I reckon staying in/nr Ghent* the night before, and doing some grockle-ing/carbo-loading in the morning looks like a nice plan. It would be lovely to share a litre and chips with fellow randonneurs, if things work out.

Maybe a siesta too ...

If anyone has space in a car to rent, let me know; otherwise train looks by far the best value/ least stress/ affordable route.

* I hostelled there on the way back from HCH2013; but I had heatstroke, and didn't enjoy my stay at all. So hopefully September will be better.

Aye, it looks as though we'll be riding through the first night. There's a sleep control at 560 km and another at 840 km, which breaks it up into a long day and a half, then a 280 km day and a short last day.

Right, I'm in - looks like a Matt-n-Manotea road trip. Last ferry from Dover on Wednesday night, cheap-as-frites hotel somewhere near Dunkirk. Then leisurely drive to the start after a lie-in.

(did try to get on Eurostar, but it was such a saga getting bike res'ns that I was despairing; so f*ck 'em.)

Plan to book a bed somewhere around the 560km control, probably catnapping/bivvying through nights 1&3.

Usual mix of excitement and nerves has commenced. I've done a load of 1000+ events, but never after missing apr/June thru injury, so this is a step back into the unknown. Starts a month today ... Gulp.

(Has anyone got  copy of the old routesheet  - sorry "road book". ? )

I'm working on the route sheet and hope to complete it by the end of the week. It will contain the following:
- Overal distance in km
- Distance in meter turn by turn
- Left, right and straight ahead are arrows signs and in different colours, so no language issues :-)
- Name of street
- Info column (can be name of the town or a danger remark like rail road crossing)

Didn't get any complaints in 2014.
I will post again when the route sheet is online.

I wonder if there are riders doing the BOB without a GPS device.
In 2012 there were 2 riders without but in 2014 every rider had a GPS device.

Yes! The Belgian rules state that any BRM up to 1000K is open for entry untill the start. Just the "extra's" (like accommodations, food or bagdrops) are optional and in most cases must be booked before the start.

In case of the BOB 2016 the full option is sold out. We accept bookings for bagdrops untill sunday 14/8.

In 2012 there were 2 riders without but in 2014 every rider had a GPS device.
If I use one, I will have less than a month experience with it!

My experience of audax - including the 1000k+ rides - is that gps usage is nowhere near 100%. And then there are the cases of technical failure (our group in 2013 included one whose GPS failed before he started, and had no routesheet or map).

So a routesheet is very very much appreciated :)

(I've only made them upto 600km, and I know how much work that was. )

Rohnny sent me a marvellous email in answer to my queries, and with lots more detail about facilities en-route and other things. He said I could publish it here, in return for tidying up his English! (I've hardly had to change a thing.) I've added control times in a couple of places.

"
- Are you still taking entries?

Yes, we still take entries, even at the start line, but only for the back to basic option.

- Control close times: do you use 13.3kph to decide all the control cutoffs?
(Some events have fast speeds in the first half of an event, like PBP).

I follow the ACP rules, so 13.3 kph rule will be used for the control cutoffs.

- Do you have any spaces for the "luxury" option?

Sorry, but at this moment, I have no more places left for the luxury option.
If you know another rider who will not participate, please let him/her contact me so we can arrange something. I will refund if another rider takes his/her place.

- For riders who just take the "back to basics" option, what facilities are at the 2 controls (560km and 840km )?
(Will it be possible to sleep on a hard floor there for a short time? Again, like PBP.)
- Will it be possible to buy any water/food during the night? (In the UK I know what petrol stations, shops etc are open and when).

Back to basic means just that: you have to be self supported. I will release the route soon so you can study the route and make preparations for yourself. The route will pass through towns where there are shops so you can buy stuff you need.

My advice is to buy food when and where you can. The route will pass via country lanes or canals so it will be not easy to find food and water when you need it, especially at night. So better buy what you need whenever you can. I didn't find any petrol station with 24h opening times along the route.

There will be drinks at the control for everyone, not just the luxury riders.

2 years ago I didn't provide any food for the back-to-basic riders at the controls. I'll see what I can do for the 2016 edition. Maybe fruits like banana, or energy bars are an option. I'll look into that and will announce it on the website and facebook.

Unfortunately, at the controls there is not enough space to sleep on the floor. Sorry for that. The controls are not in large buildings with real beds(!) so we're very limited in space. Try to make arrangements before the ride. If you want to ride without making previous arrangements, make sure you stop at a safe place.

Let me try to sketch the ride the way I see it.

Start on thursday at 14h.

Going counterclockwise you ride to the coast. That is an easy part. From Knokke to De Panne, if the wind comes from the usual SW, it will be a head wind. So it would be nice to ride in a group.

From De Panne (a control city) the route goes E or NE.

The route passes IEPER (Ypres) at the 200 km mark. My guess it will be after 20h, perhaps after 21h. Food and drinks are easily found in this town, so buffer up in Ieper. It will be dark when you leave Ieper. (the route will pass the Menin gate in Ypres where the Last Post ceremony is held every evening at 20h since 1928. If you are fast enough to make it to Ypres before 20h, I suggest you stop for 15 minutes. It is a very touching ceremony)

If you are a very fast rider and you want to sleep a few hours you can make a detour into Roubaix [231km - close 07:19]. There are some Formule 1 hotels.

The route at night isn't difficult, but there aren't any towns with night shops. That is why you need to get everything you need to make it through the night in Ieper.

Arriving in Cerfontaine at km 389 [close 18:50ish] there is a petrol station with a shop and a Carrefour shop close by. I guess the sun will be up at that time.

Going via Mariëmbourg and Heer (km 432) is easy. After Heer is will be more hilly as we enter the Ardennes. The route passes Paliseul (km 496) and Florenville (km 536), 2 towns with shops where you can go foraging or eat at a restaurant. Make the most of it, as other possibilities are limited, especially do so when it is hot.

After 564 km [close 08:14 Sun] you reach the manned control of Habay. My guess it will be between 19h-23h. If you ride in the back-to-basic style and you want to sleep near Habay, there is a truck stop center (truck-center.be) just south of the E25 in Habay, some 5 km from the control. 2 years ago some riders slept there. Just a hint.

The route is still hilly leaving Habay. Going to Bastogne is hard. In Bastogne is a ravel (an old rail road that is paved now, just for cyclists, no cars allowed) going to Gouvy (km 636), another foraging place. After Gouvy you continue to Sankt Vith, Manderfeld, Monschau, Roetgen and Wezet (Visé in French, km 780)[close 00:26 Sun] where there are shops.

From that point, the hills are over. The rest of the 220 km are flat, riding mostly along rivers and canals to Lommel (km 862), the second manned control.[close 06:30 Sun]

My guess it will be saturday evening, again around 19h-24h. If you ride in the back to basic style you can book a room in B&B's close to the route. Google is your friend :-)

(If you have any trouble booking a room, let me know, maybe I can help)

From Lommel the route continues via canals to Turnhout and Antwerpen (km 952). No problem finding something to eat and drink there.

From Antwerpen there are some 50K left, but there are no shops to buy stuff. So again make sure you got enough water, especially when it's hot.

And that's it. You arrive at the finish on sunday, my guess between 11h and 16h. The cutoff is 17h. 2 years ago the last rider had 90 minutes to spare, so it is doable.

If you want to ride at night and arrive during the night, no problem, I will be there.

This is the way I would ride. Buy food and drinks even if you have something left. It can be very hard to find something in the middle of the Ardennes. That is why those towns I mentioned are along the route.

Again, contact me if you know about someone who entered the luxury style and has no intentions to ride. We will make arrangements to switch names.

If you are looking for accommodations before and after the ride and you have trouble finding something, just let me know and I'll see what I can do to help.
"

Meanwhile, I've booked an AirBnb at Florenville on Friday night
(Habay seems a slight stretch too far, and the truckstop website says they close at midnight).

That's my neck of the woods.
Visé has a couple of 24 hour shops on the road leading up to the bridge, just before the railway station.
If you're in desperate need of a bikeshop at an ungodly hour, just 14k north, at Maastricht railway station, is a bikeshop just south of the station which has very long opening times (it doubles as a manned bikepark).
The relevant opening times are from 6.00am on saturday until 1.15am on sunday and 7.15am on sunday until 1.15am on monday night.
OK, you'll leave Belgium for a little bit but the town used to belong to the Liege prince-bishop so it's not that foreign ;).

I'm more nervous about this than any ride for quite a long time.

Especially since I've returned from La Belle France even lardier than I went. *sigh*

Oh don't say that, you being the much stronger and experienced rider, you've worried me that I'm missing something...  ;D

(Like, apart from it being quite a long way, both laterally and vertically)

Cheers for that. I really do need to sit down and sort logistics for this ride.

Quite tempted, after spending a week transfixed by transcontinental trackers, to just go for the bivvy bag option...

I have a bigger problem than being slower than fboab:

Is anyone driving over, with space for a little one, via Oxfordshire/London-ish?? Just one-way required. (I plan to die gracefully somewhere in the Ardennes)

My money that's not going to Eurostar should make a significant dent in your fuel budget for the trip.

What a beautiful route! I've cycled parts of it. Really nice! I suppose I can enter the unsupported event, even at this late a date?

Rohnny

Rhonny, I'm cycling from Rotterdam, so I'll be able to pay at the start? I'm riding part of the route this weekend. Looking forward to it.

If you think about showing up on the day of the start, please come early so all administration can be finished without time pressure. The ride starts at 14h, but I will be there at 12h.

Rohnny:
I'm analysing a few sections of the routesheet (using Google streetview). So far your distances are spot-on, and the R, L, and arrows are perfect.

However, I'm looking at the "blue signs" sections in Flanders. Your sheet says
"==> xx = blue sign" and an example is

"R->    F             Spoorzate ==> 91         984.6km"

Now, that right turn has no blue sign. And I see no sign to node 91.

I checked some near the start, and I could never find a blue sign with a number. There are blue signs (with cycle picture), but they give town names, so that is no help when reading the routesheet.

Also, many instructions only list the street name; these are often not displayed at the junction.

I'm a bit worried that these sections will be confusing, as there are lots of small turns in a short distance, and many of these signs are in the last 150km when we will all be tired!

So the route sheet is online. You don't have to print it, there will be a copy ready for you at the start.
I tried to make it as clear as possible so I worked (just like in 2014) with arrows and letters.
I also used a bigger lay-out so you don't have to stop to read the sheet.
As a result of that, there are 7 sheets of paper (= 14 pages).
Every turn, every streetname or streetnumber is mentionned as extra guidance. Also we have a thing called "fietsnetwerk" mostly indicated with a blue sign with a number. (In some parts of the country it came be a green or even a with sign with a number). It is a netwerk of nodes, connecting routes to each other so it is easy for people to go to the "fietsnetwerk" website and make a route by just print out the numbers and follow those signs.
The signs are usually put before the junction.
Just follow the distances and left, right or straight on arrows and you'll be fine!

And in case you really get lost, my phone number is at the bottom of every page.

Your example of km 984,6

3,5   ↑          Spoorzate ==> 91     984,6

meaning 3,5 km form the previous indication  -  go straight on - street called "Spoorzate" indicated with a sign with number 91 -  you're at km 984,6.

Just follow the distances and left, right or straight on arrows and you'll be fine!

And in case you really get lost, my phone number is at the bottom of every page.

I was out, last minute check of some parts of the route.
At this moment my brother is riding (solo) the route. It is very hot at this moment and the wind is not in his favor for the first 560 km. But he's going strong and aiming for a finish friday morning. If he didn't find any issues, the route is final. If not, there will be small changes, but surely nothing major.

I had some mails about the GPX file being too big (certainly for older GPS devices)
After the return of my brother, I'll cut the route in multiple GPX-files and publish them on the website.

I send an email to those who booked a room near the start, so that is covered.

I will send an email to all the participants this friday (or weekend, depending if I need to do work out some issues with the route), with all the details.

Meanwhile, I keep an eye on the weather forcast for next week. It's pretty good. Hope it stays that way.

The phone stays on and fully charged, no worries.
I try to have enough possibilities for charging your GPS devices (or is that too much pampering?  :) ) Just make sure you'll bring the right USB cables.

About 70 already entered the event and I think there will be some last minute entries at the start.
24 riders from the UK!
4 female riders entered.
Turning away from the coast (at km 143) you should have a nice wind pushing you right to the control in Habay (km 563). Well, there are some rather hilly roads so some pedalling may be needed :)

My brother just let me know that some road work has begun along the route. It is rideable but as you will pass that place in the dark, I choose to go around it. It adds some 2 km to the route. Next changes I hope to cut some kms  :)

Do we need EN341* Hi-Viz at night in Belgium?

I don't know about the numbers, but I ask you bring a reflective safety vest and that the light(s) on your bike are in good working order. Make yourself as visible as possible without looking like a cycling X-mas tree.

Helmets were mandatory when I rode Brussels Paris Brussels last year. Are helmets mandatory for this event?

I ride with a helmet. All the time. I got 3 broken helmets in my garage and I'm glad that it wasn't my skull that hit the ground. So I believe in the protection helmets provide. However...
1) wearing a helmet is not mandatory according the rules of ACP PARIS.
2) wearing a helmet is not mandatory for cyclists according the rules of the Belgian law.
3) wearing a helmet protects your brain. If you have nothing to protect...  ;)

I don't want to start a controverse, but I believe I shouldn't be "holier than the pope". Point 1) and 2) are clear. I don't see any reason to change that.

More:
RULES OF BREVETS RANDONNEURS MONDIAUX from 200 km to 1000 km:

Article 5 of the General Rules of ACP PARIS: During the event, each rider is considered to be on a personal ride. The rider must ride in accordance with all applicable traffic codes and obey all traffic signals.
The ACP, other organizers, ACP representative  and his/her association cannot and do not accept responsibility for any accidents that may occur during the course of a brevet.

So it's up to you, but I strongly suggest you wear a helmet when on a bike.

The BoB website has the "final" version of the track, and if you follow the link the the gpsies version it says it was created 18 minutes ago by Rohnny:
"Created 18 minutes ago 8/28/16 11:02 AM"

It seems he's busy working on it now. Website also has four tracks, each with fewer than 10,000 points so it can be handled by GPS devices. This bloke thinks of everything.

See you at the start. I'll be easy to recognise: I'll be displaying a haunted, terrified demeanour.

The flaw I see is that you have removed some points from the track. It may, or may not, be the case that some of those points take you somewhere you need to go, and if you follow your track you might not go to a control.

my 4 tracks for the whole 1002km have a grand total of less than 2000 track points. I'm not worried. There is, after all, a pretty blimmin thorough route sheet.

You are very unlikely to miss a control. It's much more likely that downsampling the number of points means you miss crossing to the other side of a road or canal and then find yourself on the left bank with a right turn immediately opposite. With 30m of water or a dual carriageway between you and it.

Disclaimer: I packed about halfway.
These long nights through deserted country mean carrying lots of water and food, and not seeing a light for a while is disconcerting. The traffic free experience is wonderful, but if you were alone and Something Happened it'd be a good while before a vehicle came along.
Two of us had a Formule Un hotel for the first night, which made the second day less traumatic but most rode from 2pm on Thursday to almost 600k, then faced a day of 300k with 7,000 metres of ascent. There's no easy 1,000k, obvs, and that flat bit along the coast for the first afternoon is more than compensated for by the hills. Belgium is not a flat country, y'know.
Great route, well organised, deffo recommended.  ☝

No sign of mattc by the time I left, but the VC167 crew (plus D. A. L. E), Laid Back Rich and the Kingston crew, and the Bristol lot were all tucked up in bed, or drinking beers when I left.

The rain has arrived .

Looks like a bit of a headwind slog to finish tomorrow, but everyone seems in good spirits.

Well done all and I hope all the remaining AUKs enjoy the final morning!

From the pics on Facebook etc., this looks like it has to go on the list for next season if it runs. Looks fab.

Posting this for anyone thinking of riding next year.
We used this B&B and it's ideal.
http://www.housingdebrouwerij.nl
12k from the start/finish, nice room and you get another sitting room with big tv, comfy chairs and sofa and a small kitchenette area if you want to prepare food. The town is five minutes drive away and has restaurants and a supermarket. €70 per night. They have a large parking area well away from the road which is a very quiet road anyway. You could probably leave a car there during the ride.
The lady speaks fluent English. Good breakfast.
Recommended.

Thanks for the kind words, guys. We had lots of Fun, even though It was hard work. We met a lot of lovely, interesting and joyful riders before, during and after the event. I hope to see all of you in the future, maybe during LEL or an other event in the UK. If all goes as planned, the Borders of Belgium will be back in 2018. Suggestions to make the event better are very much appreciated.

Making such suggestions to certain AUKs is living rather dangerously as some just may take you up on the offer. TG has made daft riding suggestions before and some of us might just have taken him up on the offer. No names mentioned of course.

Can I add my thanks to Rohnny and his helpers for all the hard work they put in.

A brilliant weekend away. Highlights include the endless series of ridges after Hoyuet (admittedly this highlight is very much in retrospect), the lovely town of Monschau, the varied course, passing all the late night accordion parties on the canal run-in on night two, the beer and the company.

Lowlights were few but the headwind back to the Arrivee was hard. And was I the only one who was looking for a bridge, or maybe even a ferry, in Antwerp, not understanding (until I asked) that the reason I couldn't find these things was because what I wanted was a tunnel...

Thanks, Liamo. The tunnel (and lift) was mentioned on the route sheet. Unfortunatly, there is no ferry or bridge to get to the other side of the Schelde. I can see what I can do about the strong headwind for our next event. I'll try to get less wind, but that may come with a  little more drizzling rain and less sunshine.  :)

Tunnel:
I knew about this from reading the routesheet; I guessed Antwerp would be tricky, so that was one of the bits I "armchair recced" before the ride, and used to sanity-check my GPX file. [see my many anxious posts from a week ago  ::-) ] Liam, you weren't the only one caught out - I found two Brits right outside the entrance with the same problem.

I guess this highlights a navigation problem for any long ride: the GPX will never tell the whole story that a routesheet* can,  while it is 10 times easier to follow for 95% of the ride! caveat randonneur

*(and it is hard to review 1000km of routesheet before the ride - indeed some would say that it takes all the fun away)

More general comments to follow, after I have interrogated my various gadgets ...

Yes, I know the tunnel mistake was rider error; just funny looking back at my confused state at the time: right then, so no bridge; umm, have they removed it, or is it somewhere else etc etc.

The other highlight I've remembered is the sleep stop at Habay. I knew I was getting a proper bed, but was so delighted when Rohnny showed me to a single room. All for me. The packed earplugs weren't needed.

You can add waypoints with alarms in gpx to deal with such things. So waypoint called tunnel with an alarm at the appropriate point would have triggered as you hit the river etc. Your eTrex 30 is one such device that works happily with these alarms even when navigating a track, route, or none at all.

That was totally excellent. The support from Rohnny and his family was superb, and the sleep controls were sheerest luxury. Even the first night seemed to have plenty of places to stop - ramcityrocker spotted a roast chicken vending machine, there were loads full of bread, and there was one vending machine in the middle of nowhere which was stocked with fresh fruit and veg, including an entire butternut squash, so Dale dug out his stove and we had some nourishing soup at our bivvy stop.

(https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8399/29471900246_efed512015_c.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/LUkca9)

Dale did threaten to make meringues, but we didn't really have any way to separate the egg white. Later on, we found a strawberry vending machine, and they were the best strawberries ever.

Great photo's Deano.
Think I need to invest in a decent "cycling" camera.

I really enjoyed this ride, I wasn't sure what to expect other than flat bit, hilly bit, flat bit.
The first 400 was quite quick, my fastest 300 and 400km to date, but then it was time for the Ardennes.
By the time I got to Florenville I'd had enough, I'd ridden the last 50km alone on quite a challenging section of climbing and the rough roads were doing my head in, I'd also not got any sleep in that first 540km. I'd taken a bivvy bag but only had a brief attack of the dozies earlier in the day but ridden through it.
However, I regrouped with Robyn, Suzannah and Bernie for a pizza then carried on to the sleep control which was superb.
Had a good shower and 4 hours of solid sleep and was raring to go on Saturday morning. Saturday was about 300km with about 3000m of climbing? and I loved it.
The route peaked at about 600m and from there we had some great fast descents and finished the day/night riding along flat canal paths with lots of strange nocturnal stuff going on. People fisting fishing, camping, partying, (pissed people singing and dancing to Meatloaf!) It felt a bit like Apocalypse Now at times.
The final 140km was mostly pan flat canal path but we went through Antwerp which was busy and a bit of a shock to the system but fun dragging the bikes onto an old wooden escalator (lift was broken) down to the tunnel to cross the River Scheldt.
The last section of note was the headwind. Not like anything I've experienced before, no gusts, just fully turned on wind. Weirdly, I enjoyed battling into it for the last 30km.

It was great riding with everybody, Robyn (turning into my usual overseas cycling buddy!) Bernie and Suzannah(Cardiff Ajax), Also Liamo, Fussballclub, MattC, FBOAB and the VC167 guys..Deano, D.A.L.E and Rob...and the Kingston Wheelers guys.
Also good to meet Rohnny again. I first met him on a flat, dark, quiet section of road in Scotland during LEL 2013, I mistook him for somebody I knew and screamed something at him as I TT'd passed him, he was most startled and so was I when I realised my error. We laughed about it later...and still do!  ;D

I loved the escalator - I don't think even Perrin's thought of that one!

The lift on the eastern side of Antwerp was broken. Mind you, it was working on the western side, but they all ignored me when I shouted to them.

We did wonder how the velomobiles managed!

Anyone got a good piccie of the "feature" that came just before that??

One thing I couldn't figure out - and forgot to ask People Who Knew - was
where were all the other Back-to-Basics riders?

We had 72 starters. Word was just 20 Pampered entries available (but I think Rohnny expanded this). And yet I hardly spoke to any rider who wasn't on the Full Pampered deal. Is that cos they were all in hotels and riding 6kph faster than me?

Lowlights were few but the headwind back to the Arrivee was hard.

See, I absolutely loved that wind. Felt so euro pro working with a roadie I'd never met before then solo TTing after my group (who turned out to be behind me). I arrived at the finish with one of the biggest shit eating grins I've ever had on the bike, probably only surpassed by the one I had two days before in the Ardennes.

Has anyone sent their track to the AAA man to ask about climbing points? I was going to, but there's nae point if someone else has already done it.
I've made the enquiry. Will send him the tracklog when I get home later (estimates vary wildly across the mapping sites - gpsies gives over 9km, Strava only 5 - so we'll see what the official AAA-ified number is).

Have also emailed Rohnny about the silver bling.

Does anyone know if this ride will automatically appear in our AUK List of rides for the 2016 season?
I'm counting on it to complete my SR and RRtY this year.
Thanks!

Probably not. When you get the ACP number, send it to the Recorder at AUK.

not sure how I managed the first AUK back status, given the aforementioned horror in the headwind. Actually I do know: it was not stopping for food after the last control (where Lindsay had bought me a coffee and pastry). After that I was holding out for a friterie in Antwerp. But I didn't see one that met my requirements, so I just kept plodding on at my stately 17 kph hoping against hope for some triple fried loveliness further down the road.

There's definitely some points - there's a 200km stretch with 3000m of climbing - but I don't think there will be much more than that.

I saw over to what I think was Luxembourg, away to the right after a climb;  I think it was on the road after Gouvy. It looked blinking hilly, which is what I remember from past rides in the Duchy. So that was not something I considered...

A pan flat start and finish, but lots of scenery in the middle. Overall not hilly enough for AAA, but that middle 600 is worth 7.5 AAA points.
So points should appear in the near future :)

(and I note that is the same as the Bryan Chapman. Interesting; I described that bit of the ride as "like Mid-Wales but on a larger scale" )

I'd forgotten about the early morning drinkers in Turnhout. I am not against a breakfast drink whilst on my holidays, but the coffee and pastry seemed more appropriate in the circumstances.

Thanks Mattc for the nice surprise that the ride has nearly doubled my AAA points for the season.

I was chatting to him on the second day, and he mentioned that he'd seen us sleeping and took a photo. Only fair, as I took photos of the other lot asleep. Then he said "I also videoed you", which is possibly the most disturbing thing anyone said to me on the ride - thankfully it didn't make the cut.

You may have to individually claim it from Steve - there's nothing to say it's that ride on your results, after all - "Overseas 1000" could be anything, and Steve won't necessarily know who rode it.

I *thought* that AAA points for a calendar route that doesn't otherwise bear them were subject to an individual claim along with your own GPX.

This is an area I'm almost entirely ignorant of though.

Yes, I believe that's right. Having reread Steve's email, there's nothing there to imply he'd go hunting down other riders.

(Although in theory he could - like most AUKs, I have only ridden 1 event over 600km, and it's obvious what it is and which riders also finished.)

Sorry, but I checked again and there seems to be no mail regarding brevet cards in my mailbox.
Everyone should have gotten their brevet cards back from our national organisation: randonneurs.be, not via the organizer.

This is the link to the result page on Randonneurs.be.

I hope this can help you to get your ISR.
If not, try to contact Randonneurs.be via this email address: randonneurs.be@hotmail.com
Maybe they can get you a certificate that you successfully completed the Borders of Belgium in 2016 .

Kind regards, Rohnny

From the facebook group:

We are looking for some volunteers to lend a hand during the organization of the Borders of Belgium. This is a 1000 km bike ride which will be held from Thursday 6 september to Sunday 9 september 2018. People who got some free time for 1 or 2 days at one of the two control sites to help.
One control is in the province of Luxembourg; the other control is in the South of West Flanders or the North of Limburg.
The main tasks at the checkpoints are helping in the kitchen at supper and breakfast (you don’t have to be a gourmet chef; we already have excellent cooks), show the participants their sleeping place and handing out bagdrops.
There is a compensation for the travel costs in Belgium.
More info via: bordersofbelgium@gmail.com
Thanks!

That is more or less correct.
I can go for 30 places at the locations we had in 2016.
I'm looking to increase the number of available places with sleep stops (dinner-shower-bed-breakfast-bagdrop) to 50 but that means  I have to change the locations we had in 2016. This gives me the opportunity to see if the BOB 2018 can go clockwise and not counterclockwise like in '14 and '16.
To accommodate more riders also means more people (volunteers) at the manned controls to preserve the same quality. I hope to finalise my search for good locations and volunteers in december, so I can open registrations by mid januari 2018.

I'm definitely interested in this ride, though won't be able to commit until mid-2018.
Assuming I make my own sleep/eat arrangements it sounds like I will be able to get a place, yes?

No problem. All BRMs in Belgium (so 200 up to 1000 km) are open for entry on the day of the event. Only extra's (like sleeping arrangements, bagdrop, ...) can have a closing date and/or be limited in numbers.
Entry fee for the "basic version" of the Borders of Belgium is 10 euro!

There's a Formule Un a few k from the route that makes an ideal sleep stop for the first night. Two of us used it: the first one arrived two hours ahead of me and left two hours ahead. Worked OK. Many riders seemed to go through the first night though. But a couple of hours kip and a wash make all the difference. (Not enough fr me to be quick enough so I was DNF, hence my interest in this again, but we'll see.)

Thanks. Assuming I make the start I'll probably operate on an ad hoc 'plan' day to day booking or bivvying as I go depending on weather/issues and if I'm going for beers or rushing around.
Normally I might star a few places on my phone that'll be convenient or just something I want to look at. Which town is the Formula 1 in?

Registration for the 2018 edition (start thursday 6/9/18 at 14:00) opens this saturday 20/1/2018 at 10:00 (local time, so 9:00 GMT). There will be 50 places available with the full option. Options are a bed, shower and breakfast, a dinner and/or bagdrop (bag will be provided) on the 2 manned controls. First control will be around the 550 km mark (friday to saturday), the second around the 840 km point (saturday to sunday). On our website you'll find more info. The 2018 route will not be the same as the 2016 route, especially the second part of the route.

not sure, might have been Kortrijk. TBH I was a bit knackered by then. And it was dark. It was by a roundabout. Remember that most F1 places are full most nights, it's very hard to just rock up.

Anyone know how much the organized version is going to cost?
[edit]Full options (2 nights) come to 120 euro, including a medal; single B&B is 35 euro, diner 10, dropbag 5.

Got the confirmation email and payment has been made so I guess I'm committed  ;)
[/edit]

There's also a small but important typo on the English version: it says the 2nd stop is "around the 640 km mark", Dutch and Flemish riders have their 2nd stop at 840km.

Are clip-on aero bars allowed on this ride?  I know they aren’t for PBP, but didn’t see it in the ACP rules...

Allowed I believe? I wish I had them on the last one, the canal stretches are... *waves hand aimlessly* dull? Not the right word as I loved it but would have been nice to take the weight off. I rode with my forearms on the tops for a long while, which I think there’s pictures of.

Aero bars are not forbidden during BRM rides, not forbidden by Belgian law, so not forbidden during BOB.

Speaking of traffic laws, are using earbuds (music) while riding a bicycle allowed in Belgium? (not in France I believe, ie a no-go for PBP?)

And another question about rules: are the opening/closing times of (commercial) controls to be strictly obeyed, or can you make up for arriving late at a control as long as you finish within the allotted 75 hours? In my experience some organisers follow the ACP rules on this to the letter while others take a more relaxed approach :)

I'd be interested to hear the rules as far as this too.

In July we went on holiday to Valkenswaard and nightly after putting the boys to bed I would head out on my bike. I went to to Belgium every time and rode along the canal on a couple of days. Music was great to keep me motivated as the light faded. I rode mostly on cycle paths and do not think I spotted any police.

I'm still tempted by this ride cos it's utterly fabulous, but I'll see how the year goes and try to blag my way into Rohnny's good books if I want to ride and get full service (I'm sure the nice piece I wrote for Arrivée will have drummed up a bit of UK interest).

Anybody unsure about riding this should just enter. It's a great ride. The southern and eastern sections especially will live long in my memory. But as has been said upthread, don't assume it's flat. And you might get some wind.

To top it all, Rohnny will supply you with a bottle of Chimay at the controls if you ask him nicely  :)

Currently P&O from Hull have 2 adults with bicycles at £380, which is not too bad.

For PBP I took the train to London and then Eurostar to Paris. I'm just investigating London to Brussels.

Aye, aye, aye, but with whome?? Cryingair? Who will charge you based on the number of components your bike has?

I like flying, I just don't like: Airlines, Airport Security Jobsworths, charges for a seat after I have bought a ticket, charges for using a payment card, charges for bikes when golfists get it free!

Plus I would have to take my bike on stripped in a bike bag, which I can not store once I get to Brussels!!

On balance, nah.. But thanks for the tip.

Eurostar are offering a single for as little as £29! The problem is Virgin who don't even offer tickets for 28/29 May yet!!

Thanks for the feedback. I have to admit the idea of the train appeals. When we went to Paris in 2015 it was an early start, but we arrived the same day. Also the cost appears to be a little cheaper, if we can get the early train tickets on Virgin East Coast, as soon as they become available.

dave.  I used the Eurostar from Lille - London last August, aand had planned to pop my bike on fully assembled (I was staying overnight in London so wanst fussed if the bike followed on a later service that day) however when I got to the station I was told that my bike had to be boxed in one that they supplied.  They also had tools for the job (though no pedal spanner which made life slightly more difficult).

Not sure if this is just a "Lille thing" but when I arrived in London the guys there were baffled that Id had to box the bike.

Something to be aware of from 1st hand experience.

(and I'm really f****d off with VTEC for "upgrading" their website so that online bike bookings are no longer possible.  This is still possible via other websites eg Scotrail - even for VTEC services.  While this is fine for short notice trips, the cheapest  EDI-LDN tickets are available first via VTEC so booking a bike is now much more of a faff.  Grr.  )

I'm planning to train it from London. Note that they've changed the bike rules with the introduction of the new trains, so best check the Eurostar website for the latest.

As I'll be on the last train on Wednesday night, will probably overnight in Brussels and then only collect my bike from Eurodispatch on Thursday morning. The 'all Belgium' ticket is valid for 24h so will travel onto Ghent mid-morning.

It is cheap from London to Brussels but the Edinburgh to London leg currently is looking like a standard early morning midweek special at £99 each way!!

I think I'll look again next year for PBP but the ferry looks easiest for us further up the country.

Eurostar now only have 2 bike spaces per train. Have to be booked in advance £30 one way. Restrictions on luggage size means only little wheels packed down small can get in your carriage. There are a couple of paid for bagged bike spaces - these are I believe limited to 2 as well.

Actually, yes Aidan you are right. Plus, I don't know what food is available near the ferry port. I imagine Zeebrugge is very commercial, docks warehousing etc. Not many bars or restaurants nearby to grab a bite to eat prior to departing?

Just a thought, please don't let me sway you either way. I'll be booking a buffet most likely. We used the Rotterdam/Hull ferry last summer and the buffet was useful for feeding up. We drove on that occasion.

Top touring tip - go for the buffet breakfast and fill your panniers with yoghurts, sarnies, fruit, croissants etc. Take a carrier bag.

Due to a drop out we have a space for one rider from Hull to Zeebrugge. Going out on Tuesday 4th Sept and returning Monday 10th Sept.

If you wish to join us, I am proposing to book a 4 berth cabin for 4 men (ladies can join us at your own discretion) and the cost is £384 divided by 4.

Making your own way to and from the ferry ports. We are getting the train to York and then riding to Hull, and riding from Zeebrugge to the start point.

This is for the return journey. Food is extra an £20 each way if you go for the all you can eat buffet on board, at the time of booking.

We are making our own way to and from the ferry, taking only bikes on board. The ride on the Belgian side is not far to the start.

Going out Tuesday 4th Sept, arriving on 5th Sept giving us a full day to get to the start. We'll book accommodation at the start/finish later. Then we plan to ride back on Monday 10th Sept for the evening sailing back to Hull to arrive back on Tuesday morning.

Once we have a 4th rider I'll be booking the sailing and will want the fare soonest after the tickets are booked.

Cheers, Dave C

I'm considering this ride. Anyone know how to get to the start from Brussels? Is it train to Ghent then ride? Or is there a more local station?

Geographically google maps suggests that Beervelde and Lokeren stations are the nearest to the start, but Gent is likely to have a more frequent and reliable service.

I usually take the train to Gent St. Pieters when I start in Wachtebeke.

Sort of thing that seems like a good idea at the start but less appealing after 1000km on the return journey.

23km and a free 40minute train ride over 70km seems like a plan.

Last call for another rider who wants to take the ferry to Zeebrugge. We are 3 cyclists and need one more to make the 4 berth outside (with window) cabin worthwhile.

Someone must have booked on and be considering how to get there. Train to Hull, ride on, ride off, and cycle to and from the start. Same in reverse.

With 4 it is only £96 pp on the overnight ferry. That is £46 each way, including accommodation on the ferry.

Hi riders,

We are 3 riders going to Zeebrugge from Hull on the ferry. We need 4 ideally as we are looking to book a 4 berth window cabin. The cost per rider then would be £98 each rider return. If you are riding and undecided about how to get there, we are travelling out Tuesday 4th and returning Monday 10th. This will give us plenty of time to relax getting there and back after the long ride.

If you would like to join us, please get in touch either by PM, or email davidstephencrampton at googlemail dot com

I'll give it a week and then we'll book with out anyone else.
Many thanks.

I'm planning on riding this. Dave, sorry missed your ferry booking but might see you on the ferry anyway if we're on the same one :)
Taking the car on the ferry going 4/9 and coming back 10/9 (and staying in ghent 9/9). If anyone else wants a lift I have one more space on the bike rack.

I've entered it and paid and am just waiting to hear back from the organiser.

Am I right in thinking the time is 75 hours, so you would finish by early evening sunday?

Hmm.

circumstances mean that Im thinking about this quite actively - I happen to be in That London TM until close of play on Weds 6th Sep and could go by train via Brussels.  Im reasonably well versed now in getting my bike down to just under 58cm for Eurostar in a shoulder bag I got especially for PBP in 2015.  Assembling is a bit of a chore, but less stressful than parting company with it.

Ive priced it out and Eurostar Weds/Mon staying over Brussels both ways isnt hugely expensive & I could do this on just 2.5 days annual leave.

The event looks fantastic and I have been known to appreciate the occasional beer

One thing to note if you're riding it; chuck a bell on your bike. You'll be riding on cycle paths and canals, so it'll come in handy. It's the one thing I wish I had when I rode it. Besides, I think it's law to have one.

(I've just taken delivery of a Knog Oi and although the company as a whole are a bag of dicks, designwise it's rad AF.)

Here is the route from a few years ago:
https://www.gpsies.com/mapOnly.do?fileId=dmxgrpbkttqlnprv&isFullScreenLeave=true
may be different this time, obvs, but it gives you an idea of the terrain.

note I was a DNF.

We booked an F1 room for the first night, probably a mistake as i spent too long in it. But I couldn't have ridden through the night.

We also booked a B&B - http://www.housingdebrouwerij.nl/appartementen/begane-grond/ - which was absolutely great. (I don't recommend trying to save money on the night of sleep after a big event.) We drove to the B&B, and drove to the start and during the event left the car at the start, which was large sporting venue with loads of parking.
When I packed i took the train via Brussels to Ghent and cycled to the car and then drove to the B&B.
There's a take-away food place near the B&B.
I've done a few audaxes in Belgium: love the place.

Ronny has just sent a mail about event jerseys. Payment by IBAN transfer (£9 + exchange cost) or pay at the event and pay shipping. Both will be pricey. Anyone interested in a group order with just one IBAN fee for the order? I don't mind collating if there are, say, a dozen or so. I don't have time to sort 50! Also it will be at whatever rate Lloyds give me. No time to shop around.

PM me with firm expressions of interest and I will enquire if this is ok with the supplier. If it's a goer I'll get back to you.

Edit..    UK RIDERS!

Yes, I saw that but decided to press the button anyway as the less he has the less the burden on him. As he says, he doesn't want an order of 50 and I know what it's like getting a collection of people to pay for kit at club level! My main reason for posting was to illustrate that his £9 was cheaper than Natwest, although I didn't stress that TBF.

That does look good. I'll have a look and compare. Maybe medium term, but for now the offer stands and I've not been inundated with requests (a couple) probably because of the wording I used, so feel free to add to my order. I've checked with Rohnny and a group order is fine.

I figure I can sleep on the train then short ride across London for another train.

Trying to sort out getting to the event.

Eurostar London to brussels is £90 return + £30 each way for bike.

I see I can take the bike on euro tunnel for only £20 each way. That's some saving. Has anyone used trains to get from Calais to ghent with their bike? How easy is it, rough cost?

Or take car through tunnel for £120 return and drive up. Would be more attractive with 2 cyclists and 2 bikes

French railways from Calais to Dunkirk. Cycle across the border to De Panne, train from De Panne to Ghent. Belgian costs are low, € 5,- for your bike and something like 8-10 € for yourself. Alternatively you could take the train from Calais to Lille and change there to Ghent. Biketicket will cost more as it's an international connection.

I didn't know you could use the chunnel with bikes. How long has that been the case, I wonder? I'm sure I looked into doing that some years ago and they didn't allow bikes unless they were in a car.

6 bikes and riders max.

With all that space on the train let's make some more barriers to that healthy activity/transport option of cycling.

From the description of a puck up point it seems they run a special van through the tunnel 2 times each way each day.

I guess because while it is safe to ride your bike next to motor vehicles on national speed limit roads it is not safe around the train terminal *(ike the McD drivethrough)

Easy enough but a bit of a wallet-ache. About £65 for me return to Brussels and £60 for the bike. I guess the part dissasemble/pack in their boxes might be hassle but I got one of the two "roll-on fully assembled" slots on each train.

not hugely.  You can either

- pay (and can book in advance - the streaky bit though is that the bike and train bookings are with 2 different bodies the latter is Euro Dispatch iirc).

- take your bike on in a bag but you need to get it down to 58cm length max.  I can manage this on my bike by removing wheels and handlebars.  Practically this also means removing saddle, pedals and securing the rear mech.  Of course youd need somewhere to carry / store the bag its carried in.  I bought one from Amazon pre PBP 2015.  Id recommend carrying a copy of the Eurostar guidelines (from their website) on the matter with you as there might be a jobsworth who will want to stop you.  Ive done this three times to Paris so 6 journeys and Brussels might be different.

£68 for me £60 for my bike. Less hassle than boxing and in boxing or driving in Belgium or finding somewhere to park at folkestone.

Although I checked with eurodispatch that spaces were available then booked my tickets then tried to book the bike on only to be told the last train to brussels each day can't take bikes.

Anyway bike will be in Brussels when I need to leave for ghent and dropping off and collecting is simple (now I know where to go in each station)

The bike costing the same as a person seems extreme but still compares well overall against taking the car through the tunnel and having to drive 100miles each side of the channel. I suppose peoplecwithvmore time might ride to and from the ferry. But i cant see any other method being cheaper and easier.

Just starting a bit of research into what we'll be riding through. Nice to have some background on landscape and history. So far I've got as far (roughly) as North = Flemish, South = French. So from start to Lille probably mostly the former, then mostly French round the southern half then back to Flemish. I know the coastal resort road but not the quieter hinterland roads behind it that we will be taking. We pass the Ardennes obviously. I'll do a bit more looking at notable climbs, areas of natural beauty and national park type stuff. Also maybe note any points where we pass famous pave or ride classics "bergs" or bits of the "Ronde" etc.

Anyone want to chuck in contributions that would be great.

Simplistically yes, but language wise you're constantly switching between Dutch and French, with a bit of German thrown in too, which can get a little confusing. I walked out of a shop in a huff because the woman didn't know what I was talking about only to realise later I'd been talking (very poor) Spanish.

Saying that, most people speak some sort of English.

Also, if the route is the same as two year ago, you can clamber down a grassy bank and head into Luxembourg, to make it a ride of 5 countries. Not sure how many people were daft enough to do it mind.

I twisted my knee on Monday, fingers crossed that it seems to be recovering quickly & there are still a few weeks to go so I should be OK...

Anybody know when the final route will be published, I was talking to my riding buddy who was starting to drool over maps :)

The route will be published next week.
During route checking I came across a big difficulty that made me change more than 100K of the original route.
I rerouted and will check it out this weekend.

I assume you found 100k with headwind so you’re changing it to have a tailwind?  ;D

Thanks Rohnny, looking forward to it.

Awesome tracks & routesheet Rohnny - I'm still nursing a knee injury with rest, hoping to be on the start-line as it looks great!

In terms of the routesheet, I'm slightly confused by some control close times.  It looks like all controls up to VISE have a min speed of 15Kph, but after that for Maaseik onwards it drops to 13.3kph?  is that right?

Also, as a full value rider, I notice you have the time on routesheet at exactly 75 hours, not the 75hrs 11mins or whatever 1000/13.3 works out to be.  I'm just wondering which is right so I can make sure i get the best value out of the ride :D

For a 1000 BRM, the minimum average speed should be 15 kph for the first 600km, similarly to how PBP approximates 15 kph for the first 600km. The maximum time for a 1000 BRM is 75 hours, regardless of actual distance on the road.

Thanks LW&B - Learn something new everyday :)

This is my first BRM over 600, and given my very recent knee injury I wanted to plan out a full value strategy that gives me most chance of success!

Your passage time at the controles is not that important, but let it be a guide for you. It is important to build up a good buffer on the first 400K. The next 350K will be... hilly. The last 200K could well be into a headwind. So the buffer is rather important.
If you leave the controle in Champlon (557K) before 5h on saturday morning you should be alright.
The tracks and route sheet could undergo changes if we encounter problems during our last checks this and next week. If so I will publish the updated tracks and routesheet and put the date of the update on the website.

5am is very early, considering a 280km section to the next overnight control, will there be breakfast available at that control for riders staying elsewhere? As other accommodation will not do food that early.

Also I notice there is a huge gap between the 1st and 2nd control, are there plenty of 24 hour services along the route? or do I need to plan for a desert?
Title: Re: Borders of Belgium 1000 2016

Leaving the control in Champlon you start to go up and down the hills for 185K with 2500 meters to climb. So it all depends on your fitness level I guess.
According the ACP time table, the closing hour of the control in Champlon is 2:08 in the morning. The closing time in the next control (647K) is 9:07. If you leave at 5 you have got 4h to do 90K on hilly terrain. But as I said earlier: I'm not going to check the times with a loupe.
Anyway, the control in Champlon closes at 6 because we have to clear the site before 7 and we have a lot of cleaning to do. Therefore we can not offer breakfast for riders staying elsewhere, sorry.
indeed there is a huge gap between De Panne and Houyet. There are no 24h petrol stations along the route that I know of. 24h stations are rare in Belgium. There are some along the mayor highways, but unreachable by bike. So my advise is to buy what you need whenever you can. There is a petrol station in De Panne, you cross Ieper (171K) and Roubaix (207K). By morning you arrive in Cerfontaine (340K) where a patrol station and a Carrefour can be good places to buy food and drinks.
Keep in mind that the possibility for shopping in the South of Belgium is scarce. That is why I directed the route via towns like Paliseul (SPAR shop), Bertrix, Neufchateau, ...
But hey, BOB is not club Med  :)

I rode part of the route in the summer, about 300km on from Roubaix, so not the flat bit and was impressed by (a) the total lack of shopping opportunities and (b) the number of village high streets being excavated to a depth of several feet. So you will be hungry but will have lots of new black to look forward to. Unless of course they pour concrete slabs with ridges every 10m (Bump... bump... bump... ). Or lay cobbles (Bumpitybumpitybumpitybump). Also, keep an eye-out for badgers (live-uns, not squashees like we have in the UK). And wild boar...

Vegetarians defenitly have an advantage when carrying lukewarm food around in a saddlebag.
I occasionally do this on long brevets, go to a Chinese takeway around 20h and carry the remainder for a nightly 2nd dinner.

After going through the route sheet I'm left wondering if the first control really is after 400km (Houyet)?

The "Verloren Gernoare" tavern in Adinkerke at 127km would make sense to be a control, but isn't labeled as such and doesn't show opening/closing times like the others.

Speaking of closing times, and knowing they're not strictly adhered to when it comes to homologation, how were they calculated? For Houyet for example I come to 14:00 + (400km / 15km/h) = 16:40 whereas the route sheet lists 15:40

Using the RUSA calculator (https://rusa.org/octime_acp.html) I come to:
Code: [Select]
Wachtebeke
    0km   start: 09/06 14:00
          close: 09/06 15:00

Adinkerke

@Zed:
Don't forget the org has discretion over opening/closing times. In fact somewhere ACP (or LRM?? I forget ...)  recommend times with a "front-loading" i.e. riders are expected to rider faster to the earlier controls (in practice on, say 1000/1200km riders this means riders getting sod-all sleep until the last quarter of the ride, which I find stooped, but there ya go ...)

in 2014 Rohnny did front-load the times a bit. So I'm not surprised if your 500k-ish control "closes" a little before 37.5hours clicks around.

HTH! It's all a bit bonkers, but will be alright on the night ...

Update from the organisation:
Adinkerke (De Verloren Geinoare) is a control. I updated the route sheet. Sorry for that. It is marked on the brevet card as a control.

About the closing times: I used the official ACP tool.
If you do too, don't forget to set the closing time of the start at 6/9/2018 14:00 as it is a ride with a fixed start hour. If you don't change the closing time, the tool takes the opening time + 1 hour.
That explanes the 1 hour difference.

Kind regards,
Rohnny

My ride came to a crunching end around halfway when my rear hub bearings failed catastrophically, having tried to figure out for a while where an occasional ticking sound was coming from after retensioning my chain. An hour's walk to Bertrix along a busy N road, trains to Brussels, stinking out a hotel, now going to go to Ghent, hire a bike and head back to the start to collect my bags.

Had a great ride up until that point, just about managing to cling onto the main group as we sped our way to Zeebrugge and detoured around the raised lock bridge there. As I finally gave up on the fast pace along the coast, having become detached from my two ACH clubmates, hooked up with some Belgian randonneurs including Stephan from Geraardsbergen whom I know from being a key volunteer at the TCR start. He was a perfect local guide, pointing out interesting facts as we passed first world war sites and through the town where they fish for shrimps with horses. On his advice, stopped for food after 90km near Ostende, bounced the first control, and stopped again in Ieper in a bistro with a perfect view of the cathedral that served spagbol within a few minutes of ordering. From there hooked up with wycombewheeler/HuffnPuff (I think) as well, but got separated from the Belgians in Roubaix when I led us on a wrong turn.

I then managed to introduce my front wheel to possibly the biggest pothole in Belgium with enough force to ding the rim and puncture the tubeless tyre right above the bead. After some faffing but with help from the others put a tube in and continued just the three of us through the night to Cerfontaine with occasional 10 minutes breaks to clear any dozees. The rain then socked in as I grinded up the climbs of the Ardennes at my own pace, questioning the choice of 79" as I walked through Heer and up the Maas valley. It's not like riding a stupidly high gear puts any extra stress on the hub, right?

Gutted to say the least, there goes my only BRM for this year and SR to boot.  Ah, well, maybe I should just ride TCR instead of PBP, I'm going to need get a flipflop hub for that anyway...

(edited to correct spelling of Stephan)

Bad luck with the mechanical. These things happen if you do a lot of rides and a lotta miles. (It would probably have been less fun in mid-Wales!). Sounds like you're having a proper Belgian experience :)

don't think it was me, I stopped for dinner at a pizzeria at Roubaix at 10:50, I think i paid for that pace at the end of Friday, but on the flip side I did get plenty of sleep on friday night which lead to a great day on saturday.

We had wind, we had rain, we had foggy frost and then we had a warm sun. We had roads that made you long for gravel, as that would have been an improvement, and we had cycling paths that were smooth as butter. We had pains in legs, knees, shoulders and asses, that mostly faded as time progressed. We had boulangeries at 7am that would only open at 7:30 and then we had wonderful veg curry at the control in Barrière de Champlon.

In short, we enjoyed the ride, a lot

A big thanks to Rohnny, Francis and all the other volunteers that made this happen!

By my reckoning this event would also qualify for some AAA points: track 3 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28340887) and track 4 (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/28340892) up to Signal de Botrange (km 116.6) would yield 4526 meters in 333km. Now I'm new to this AAA thing, is it simply a matter of mailing the AAA secretary this information once Rohnny publishes the homologations (http://www.randonneurs.be/page/results-2018)? Or should we coordinate something?

I didn't have frost or fog. Probably due to extracting full value from my expensive hotel in champlon.

I had headwinds  overcast headwinds rain  headwinds blazing sunshine. Arriving in Vise on a dodgy rear tyre after the bike shops had closed and nursing it to lommel.

Also more roadworks than I have ever seen on a single ride.

Did I mention the headwinds?

All Flandrian roads lead to Omleidung.

Not all, the Maastricht railway station bikeshop is open till midnight, only 15km north of Visé. Or you could have pm-ed me, I always have a few spare tyres kicking about ;).

Last time everyone had to claim separately. I think the section to consider is from roubaix to Vise. 535km for something like 7000m of climb.

Ivo. Google tells me 10pm but I was there before then so it woukd have been useful.

This was my first go at the BoB. I really enjoyed the whole experience. I liked the Belgian cycle infrastructure and their considerate drivers. The first section the control 1 was lovely. As we arrived at control 1 and found it closed our hearts sank a little. This was a taste of what was to come.

I was riding with Aidan Hedley from Durham on his head turning new trike, yet to be named. Some may know of his trike tandem called Rufus? Now I have notridden with Aidan before. He uses a route sheet but had a new eTrex 30x as a back up, with a slightly out of date route. So I got used to shouting at Aidan as he would turn the wrong way and need a nudge in the right direction.

Ypres was beautiful and Aidan found a late night cafe so tucked into spag bol at 11pm Friday. As the cloud came down and light drizzle set in we plodded on through the lanes and the odd section of 'cobbles'?? (I'm sure there is a proper name for them). But the section through the French city of Lille was great as there was no traffic. The next section was grim. No water, no opportunity to get a rest, with all covered areas under bright security lights. All the houses had outside taps on the front, but everyone we tried was turned off inside, of had the handle removed.
Getting rid of rubbish was a problem too, no bins anywhere in the SE!

We eventually rode into dawn and the ups and downs to the wet supermarket after the dam. Then on as it dried up to Houyet where the sun was definitely out in force. The climbs there were long but not impossible, especially with my triple. As we tired, Aidan found an open barn with hay bales we slept on. I went to slerp as soon as my head hit the hay! From here the countryside rolled over to Neufchateau where it was becoming a lovely ride again. Iced creams were the order of the day.

It is funny how cold, dark and rain make the ride less enjoyable.

The last section through the forest to Martelange was nice except for the late night boy racers who buzzed past. At Martelange, Aidan said it's up here, and turned away from the garage we could see a hundred metres to the left. He caught me after 5 minutes... After a lovely stop in Arai Garage we were joined by a lone Belgian lady, Elizabeth. She was slow at climbing and Aidan soon left us. I stayed with Elizabeth to Champlon despite her repeated suggestions that she was slowing me down. It would not be gentlemanly if I were to have left her, and then she develop some problem. The ride to Champlon was lots of climbs and drops. The valleys were bitterly cold, some suggesting 2-3 degrees. It certainly felt cold and I was glad of my merino wool top. If I left Elizabeth and she had to stop, she would have frozen! She was borrowing Aidan's water proof as it was.

Champlon was just at the stage I was starting to doze. Those 3 espressos in the garage were obviously wearing off. Elizabeth told me off for looking at the sheep. I didn't need to count them to fall asleep!

The ride on Saturday I did alone as Aidan left 15 minutes before me suggesting as I was faster I'd catch him. I didn't. I got to the control at Losheimergraben in good time, 11:30. I ate a hearty bowl of soup and 2 rolls. I had to explain what a roll was. Briuchen?? Anyway after there I slept for an hour in the woods behind and returned to a confused looking bar maid, to order soup again! :-)

The drop from that control was fast and I was making up good time until a couple of hours later when I had a sudden puncture. I inspected the tube to find a short pinch type gap. Then 5 minutes later another, a sudden ppssst and flat. I assumed a rim tape issue as the tyre had no sharps in. But on having a look at the tyre in detail I found a narrow cut in the side wall. I suspect the tube bulged out and the hot rim melted the tube. Good job I had a spare tyre, I put new tyres on the bike just before... :-(

At the tri border I hooked up with Bobby from Oxford and we rode together to Lommel. Bobby is a great guy and really made the journey fun. He still owes me an iced cream though... ;-)

After Lommel we rode together again along more canals with a larger Belgian group. Aidan had set off earlier. I rode for a time chatting to Dave Smethurst. He is a lovely chap and we had a lot in common. I have a great respect for Dave now, cheers man! We caught Aidan, or rather he caught me, at the last control. Lost again Aidan? :-)

Here Gabriele rolled in in her Quest XS. She had a carbon breakage where here front wheel brace attached. After rooting through my spares/tools I unbolted here wheel arm and rebolted it with a spork attached. The carbon was broken on 3 sides and pulling open like a door. The spork secured to the 'outside' prevented the 'door' from opening. She completed the event! So success all round I think! :-)

Then we had a nice quorum to Antwerpen where we had a great meal out in the sun and beers. The last 43km dragged along next to the motorway but we came in with 2 hours to spare, so all good.

I slept quite a lot the next 2 nights, suppose 4.5 hours sleep on a 1000km brevet is reasonable?? :-)

Ok we get the point but you have slapped down a very nice guy on the basis of a mass of knee jerk assumptions. I was thereabouts on that night and didn't leave a stronger, younger guy because he was seriously sleep depped as most of have been at some point. It would have been neither "gentlemanly" nor in the spirit of the sport, nor safe to push on.

Attitudes need to change. Best to choose actual examples where you have first hand experience for the rant.

I know Dave. I also thought he seemed a nice guy, but whether he's a nice guy or not is irrelevant.
There are anecdotes all over this forum from relatively slow women who have struggled to get rid of 'gentlemen' on audax. I'm almost certain I've said so myself, it's certainly happened more than once.
If you ask someone to leave you alone and they don't, they are giving you no respect, and that's not gentlemanly, nor the action of a nice guy.
I wasn't there and I'm not Elizabeth, but I'm not alone in being a woman who is exasperated by men's assumption that they need looking after.

ETA : don't get me wrong, it's nice to offer help. But if it's refused, you should respect that refusal.

Well, I was certainly there that night. Lisbeth pointedly asked to ride with us from the garage at the outset. I rode on as I was worried about my four coffees wearing off. She came back to the finish, (having packed at Lommel) to collect bags, stayed to meet riders share beers and swap stories.  IMO No hard feelings, in fact the exact opposite.

What an awesome adventure that was.  4 weeks ago I twisted my knee and developed sciatica - forcing me into lots of rest and thinking hard about even attempting to start... So glad I did!

Setting off in a fairly fast group I got my first experience of the great cycling infrastructure and amazingly cycling-friendly car drivers that you see around most of the country.

I let go of the group after about 100k, then coasted in to the first control at a more comfortable speed.  Stopping for some well needed food, I felt for the riders that got there a bit later only to find the kitchen closed.  That was indeed the theme of the ride - eat or buy food whenever you can...

After that we hooked up with a couple of German riders and headed down towards France, through ypres And the Menin gate then down to Roubaix.  Seeing some bikes outside a kebab shop we stopped for food, chatting to Ivor and Dan ? From Loughborough and Derby area (Sorry I keep forgetting the names!), then it was on to the F1 hotel for a couple of hours sleep.  I thought it was too soon in the ride, but I needed it and was glad of the rest.

In the early hours we got up again & headed out into the rain, nothing too bad really but did go on for a few hours.  We hooked up with John OTP, and the hills started, then, boom an unassuming corner and my mate was down.  Ripped shorts, jacket, arm warmers etc and the obvious sight of gravel rash poking out  :'( three locals came to check on him, John spoke good French so reassured them and asked about pharmacy etc.  After a rest and some coke we got him back on the bike, John and I just pootling along whilst he sat on the wheels and recovered.  John originally from oxford but now living in Belgium filled us in on some of the culture and practicalities of Belgium living.  Next control we stopped at the supermarket for food and then a cafe for coffee and rest.  After a long stop Glenn felt ok to carry on, but maybe 1 hour later he coasted up the top of a hill and announced the need for a reality check - his leg was hurting and he couldn’t go on.

John also wasn’t feeling it so they agreed to stop and ride to near Neufchateau and find a train.  They both voiced that I was way behind time and not going fast so it seemed impossible I could finish.  That was the motivation I needed, I said my goodbyes and push hard on the next stretch.

We had plodded the leg so far with an average of only 13.9kph, but on the tribars where possible and some adrenaline got me up to 19kph for the leg only 2 hours later, & it felt like I had a chance... either way I had to do at least half the distance :)

It got very cold in the dark, but when I got to the next control I found a couple of Hackney riders and some others some other getting their cold weather clothes on.  This gave which gave me the boost I needed - I wasn’t on my own!  I put on all clothes I had whilst everyone else shot off, then set about chasing them down... I didn’t managed to ride with any of them but said hello at least as we yo-yo’d past eachother.  I got tired and slow again towards the control , the hills and cold taking their toll.

At last, the control @3am, eat, shower, sleep, eat.  Back on the road for 6am (4hrs over time).  There were maybe 20 riders at the control but the relentless hills kept me riding on my own.  Lunch stop with 10 other riders saw the sun come out, and my spirits lifted, I set off again on my own but promptly got lost and spent over an hour/16k off route.  Now I felt like I’d blown it :(

Assuming I was last again I plodded on , once at the 710k control I saw a handful of riders set off, but two stayed until i’d eaten.  We tried to form a group, I managed to be a similar pace as Dave_c and we stayed together until the end.

Not long after and the hills were done, We were still 3 hours over time, so pushed on using the tri bars to make up good speed.  Dave is faster than me but company helps, we rode next to eachother along the canals etc clawing back the time.  Stopping for a picnic felt surreal and normal - thanks for the food Dave!

We both struggled with sleep deprivation crawled the last few Km in the last sleep stop again in the very early hours.  food , shower, sleep in our own dorm for 1.5 hours , back on the road at 6.  There was a group up the road so we chased them down and hung in for 50km.  I was struggling with the pace, but boy it was worth it!  I knew by the. I could make it on my own, but a little group draft sure made it pass quicker and easier!  A nap at the next cafe whist my coffee cooled and I was set for the day.

Into Antwerp we hooked up with Aidan and Ivor? Stopped for a long lunch/beer in the sun, followed by a gentle pace through to the end, we even stopped for a ice cream with 10k to go.

I think I had 1.5 hours in hand at the finish, and my riding buddy have made it back to meet me at the finish (even wearing the same clothes as I had the car keys!

I ended up 25k over:
https://www.strava.com/activities/1835263896 (https://www.strava.com/activities/1835263896)

Legs are shot, hands are sore, but all in all I really enjoyed it :)

I think 1000k May be my new favourite distance, though the drive home on Monday took ages as I kept stopping to sleep, and i’ve been a bit sleepy all week :)

Thoroughly recommend event - just take note that it’s hard to get food/water!

I assume that's what was filled in (or not filled in) on the entry form. I understand that the ACP code for Audax UK is 16000, and that certainly seems to be the case for the other AUK members.

I did fill in 160000 as the ACP code but for me it also lists "UK" on the results sheet. There are a few people with "Audax UK" and "16000", but <shrug/> all I care about on that sheet is the ACP homologation number ;-)

Hey Bobby,

It was really good to hook up with you for the last 300km. I really enjoyed your company and our nocturnal chats. Those canal sections are great for munching up the miles, (but next time I'll head through Maastricht. I've visited it before on the train and would like to see some more.) I enjoyed our chat at the impromptu picnic also, these little things are what make Audax memories. I would have shared what I had to eat regardless of how much or little I had, Sharing is caring right?

Thanks also for the tip about the café at the Triborder. I had forgotten about the control at that point and if I was on my own would have ridden straight past without controlling.

The Recorder is a busy volunteer especially at this time of year, currently has a full time job, and likes to get out on his bike occasionally.  Please don't expect an instant reaction to emails.   See also   http://forum.audax.uk/index.php?topic=1587.new#new

The Club code (ACP Code in the results table) is not of concern.  What matters is the Homologation number - the first column.

This is what I did:
* in my case, the 451km between Dour (actually, a little before, where the route crosses the N51) and Slenaken (a little after, crossing N598) yields 5727 metres of elevation which is just above the 5600m required for 450km

example: relevant section of day 3
(https://www.dropbox.com/s/a7htz1k56e7dubs/BoB29018-day3-AAA.png?raw=1)

Just curious, how/where can you see how many AAA points others have picked up on a foreign ride? It's not on the 1000km results page (http://www.aukweb.net/results/archive/2018/listevent/?Ride=OS1000) (interestingly 15 out of 16 rides on that page are BoB)

Have you ever heard the expression, "no means no"?
It's incredibly infuriating and patronising to be stuck with someone when you have requested to be left because they are 'a gentleman'. She's slower than you climbing, so couldn't ride away, and when she tried to be dropped you wouldn't leave her. You wouldn't have acted this way if she were a man.
While I agree in general, having felt like that on occassion, I think he did the right thing. You see, I stood right next to Elisabeth when she explicitly thanked Dave for staying with her. She thought she might not have made it to Champlon if he hadn't.
I argued with some guys a couple of years ago because they thought they could not let me ride through the night alone.
But, you see, I didn't tell them I was too slow and they should ride on, which is like: "I don't want to be a bother, but...", I told them I prefered riding at my own pace and could deal with whatever happened, too, so off with you. They get it if you tell them straight.

I (female) once stayed with a protesting wheel mate (male) because he was so exhausted with sleep deprivation he wasn't thinking clearly. I would have worried. Maybe it was patronizing, but I couldn't just ride off and let him be.

My personal thanks to Dave for installing a spork in my ride.

Has anyone had their brevet card returned for this? I don't recall mine coming back to me. If it was a regular brevet I wouldn't mind, but it's nice to have a memento for an overseas ride.

Didn't ride BoB, but I'm also waiting on my Brevet card for another Belgian ride i did in 2018. Not sure when they will be sent out.

Usually they are distributed at the annual randonneur party. Sometimes a randonneur takes a whole stack with them. QG, you may check with Leo as he brought my Belgian cards with him.

The brevet cards are not in the hands of the organisers; Randonneurs.be has all the cards.
As a rule they don't send the brevet cards.
I did get some mails about the brevet cards. I send the mails to Randonneurs.be so they could send the cards.
I contacted them again yesterday and asked if they could return the cards to all the finishers of the BOB.
They agreed so you should get your cards in the next couple of weeks.

Hi Rohnny,

I've got unfinished business with this, but if you decide to go ahead with it in 2020 let us know here if you need volunteers at all at any of the controls as if I can't ride it, could maybe help out.

Mine arrived also, many thanks for organising the ride and posting the Brevet Card. It was a fantastic tour of Belgium and introduced me to places I had never thought of visiting before.

I'm glad to see the bevet cards have arrived. As I said before the sending of the bevet cards is a thing of Randonneurs.be, not the organisers. I just asked nicely if they would send the bevet cards to the non-Belgian riders and they did.

Is that just for BoB or did they send out other international brevet cards? I haven't had my card from the December Bruges ride, and am wondering if I should email someone and ask for it...
