Cycle-Rail Awards 2017

Now in its 13th year, the Cycle-Rail Awards recognise the progress made by the rail industry and associated organisations towards encouraging integrated cycle-rail travel.

The Rail Delivery Group (RDG) has a clear aim to encourage the greater use of cycles to access the railway. The awards enable RDG, its partners and stakeholders to move closer towards fulfilling this aim by improving communication and developing best practice.

The Awards will be held on Thursday 23rd November 2017.

How to enter

There are eight categories. Click here to browse the categories and criteria for entry.

The 2017 National Cycle-Rail Awards open for entries and nominations from Monday 24th July 2017 and closes on Thursday 14th September 2017 at 17:00. The entry forms will be available on the category pages between those dates.

All entries will be treated in the strictest confidence. The judges’ decision is final and no discussion or correspondence relating to any of their decisions will be entered into.

Apparently the original deadline was yesterday, they've extended it due to the low number of entries.

And remember: The first rule of the cycle-rail awards is that it's never about bikes on trains!

Facebook comment on the awards reflects a widespread view that it's not so much the stations - more the trains - that need to be encouraged to improve cycle provision ...

I mean, ideally we'd have both - more secure parking would be nice, and (though there is probably a touch of the chicken and the egg here) would probably be used more than the two bikes on a train or whatever is actually available these days.

You're not kidding, it's hard to find a category you could shoehorn a nomination for something on board into.  There is an email in the OP link though....

Hi,

Could you please consider adding a category to your awards in future years dedicated to provision of facilities on board trains?  Your awards are heavily biased towards every part of a cycle rail journey that occurs off the train.  It is likely that nomination for this category would be few initially as it is an area that desperately needs encouragement.

And the paragraph I decided against including:

Or perhaps add a 'worst' award in which we can nominate TOCs that use the cycle space as overflow storage for the on-board refreshments.  Or staff that refuse to remove able bodied people occupying the cycle spaces.  Or staff that refuse to remove baggage from the cycle spaces.  Or TOCs that only provide spaces too narrow for mountain bikes, too short for recumbent cycles or too everything for a hand trike.

No actually a worst category is a bad idea, you'd be inundated.

Perhaps an award for "the most ingenious* place to put bicycles on a train that was never meant to take bicycles"?

* for ingenious, read inconvenient, or even hazardous.

I am often asked, what does YOAV stand for? It stands for Yoav On A Velo

In fine BRITISH tradition, the only award won for transporting bicycles went to a rail-replacement bus.

That is absolute genius! You wouldn't want them to consider actually carrying bikes on trains, would you?

TBF, that one seems a fairly worthy award:

The Innovation award was presented to MerseyRail for its work in supporting cyclists during track replacements in the tunnel under the Mersey that connects the Wirral to the city centre. MerseyRail worked with Arriva North West to provide a “bike bus” service; a bus fitted with eight bike holders ran an hourly service between stations during the track renewal project.

Much more relevant than:

Meanwhile, Transpennine Express took the award for Door to Door Journeys, Including Station Travel Plans. TPE has set out a “clear and actionable” plan for better integration between trains services and local transport services, said the judges. The operator has produced nine Station Travel Plans in the past year and is due to complete a further 10 in the next nine months.
So you've got buses to meet trains. Good, but what's it got to do with cycling?

Oh, absolutely.

The ones pertaining to cycle parking at stations are perfectly worthy too, even if they are a distraction from transporting cycles by train.
