My first audax back in 2013. I recall having cake and coffee at end of every loop in Battle then wondering why i  was one of the last to finish... Done it once again since then, will try and return for a third slice

To judge by conversations today on Hills & Mills, we'll be seeing quite a few of you in a few weeks' time on Mad Jack's.

Watch out for that grumpy bloke at the Burwash control  :smug:
Besides, it wouldn't be audacious if success were guaranteed.

For the riders-

Route sheet updated 18/2/18 (see calendar page).   http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/18-85/

Riders please note, there are lots of potholes that have appeared and too numerous to plot each one. Please ride as you normal ride on roads with potholes. Also lots of mud and gravel from the recent rain that has washed off some of the fields, again proceed as you normally do in these conditions.

The return route section from Fairlight from 85.30 @ Three Oaks, the Road is CLOSED but one can still get through if you dismount and walk about 10 metres through the pedestrian pathway. There is no real alternative route so please roll with this..

Final route check will commence at the end of this week with my forward scout..

The weather forecast says it'll be a dry day, chilly but no rain.

For the riders-

Begin forward scout report- apparently there are lots of hedge’s that have been cut and cuttings on the road, be mindful of this.

Weather see forecasts.

Road still closed @ 85.00km in Three Oaks, but one can still dismount and walk through.

Team primed and we will see you in the morning if entered.

Great day out, I really enjoyed being at the control at Burwash, good to see old friends again and I look forward to doing it again next year.
Hope to see The Usual Suspects on Hills & Mills next January.

That was a great adventure. Despite the weather, I pushed ahead with my plans to ECE from Southborough. This entailed a very early start to drive down to Southborough, and then enduring -2 conditions at 6am when I set off on the bike. After 1.5km I heard a clicking and thought some grit may be stuck to the back wheel. I stopped, and discovered that in stopping my rear disk brake stuck solid. I loosened and then retightened the blocks, which seem to free it up. But when I checked the brake it did the same thing, locking up. So I freed it once more, and resolved to just use the front brake, with the rear for emergency stops only. I was therefore keeping the speed slow on the downhills.

Little ice on my ECE route, as I had selected mostly gritted roads. At Hailsham I checked the rear brake, and it was now working fine. It had probably resolved itself earlier, perhaps being frozen at the start, and thawing on route.

The calendar ride was lovely, if a little icy on some of the lanes. Excellent company with a combination of Essex/Kent riders I know, although I pushed ahead after Fairlight as I was getting worried about finishing the ECE in time. Turns out I was back in Hailsham only 10 minutes before the others.

The return ECE route took me via Crowborough. On one of the descents my dynamo light switched to what I would think is daytime mode. Very little light emitted, just as I approach a section of slush. Very disconcerting. After that I used a spare front light, and with the dynamo light switching off and on quite often, I ended up switching it off completely. Perhaps a loose wire somewhere.

So a long day, but I'm pleased to have a nice hilly ride completed so early in the season. Thanks to the organisers and helpers - every stop was a pleasurable experience with smiles and banter galore.

Route check 16/2/19, Updated route sheet please download. Some road surfaces have deteriorated/ even more pot holes with the recent cold/ wet spells. One needs to ride this route as one would normally ride any other roads so please be aware of the state of the roads..

Note some large potholes (but not all of them that are present at the route checking stage!) around/on- 06.22 km Cinderford lane. 12.49 on descent in dip towards Ponts Green. 69.62 On bend towards Doleham Halt. 87.60 on, in dip on descent whole carriageway! Noted that some repairs to the road surfaces have been undertaken and one would consider that this is repair work in progress.

Info control at 20.21, a note will be issued at the start regarding this, for obvious reasons I cannot give out the question details here please read notes at start that will be on display!

Please note that this is a GDS listed event which promotes hilly events in the Southeast of the UK, Martin has details of other events which are also listed here https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=1254.0 & https://sites.google.com/site/grimpeursdusud/

I still think it's beyond my abilities after losing all my fitness over the winter after borking in November
