Just got a call from Bob Jacksons.  Our tandem is ready after respray, work etc.

I've just emptied out the Shed Fund* to pay the ransom, and it should be back next thursday

It cost A Lot Of Moneys - about twice what the bike originally cost us off ebay.  And most folk probably would think we were mad doing it, but our Delilah will be back on the road for the wedding, and that's worth a lot to me :)

*  Now just need to save up for new tent, doing up the car to flog it, paying off the last of the debts, commuter bike, etc etc etc (oh, and a shed!).
Getting there...

Bikes, particularly tandems, are like people and need looking after. They're not expendable so you're doing the right thing.

I reckon you have your priorities right Clarion.Whatever you have spent on the tandem is probably less than it costs to run a car.

Still running a car :( :( :(

But this job has given us a shiny black 531 tandem for substantially less than the Santana I was ogling.  It's a damn good bike, and I hope we can be riding it for many years to come. :)

I believe that spending on bikes gives better value for money than on cars & in any event you get more smiles per mile.

Was this just the respray?  Does it now need lots of (extra) money spent on shiny new bits for it, or was that included in your previous "A Lot Of Moneys"?
Actually, it is rocket science.

It had:

Stripdown BBs & Headset
Extra bottlecage mount
disc brake mount
revised cable routing
Respace rear dropouts
Respray (black)
Names added
New BBs & Headset
STI levers
Disc brake
New rear wheel
Bar end lever

I think that's it.

We have front wheel, chainsets, bars, stem, 'guards, seatposts (inc a new Thudbuster) and saddles, mechs, brakes, and front rack.

Need cables, chains, bar tape and probably rear rack.  And a lot of time & patience to build it up.

Our tandem has been idle & gathering dust in the garage for several years whilst my stoker endured surgery & treatment for various orthopeadic ailments.
We have come close to selling it on a few occassions but resisted the temptation.

It will be like having a new bike again

There is a little bit of "Je ne sais quoi" about cycling on a tandem.

Our film star is due back home soon.    8)    She'll be getting a bit of superstar pampering and TLC before moving to her new home:  A gift from us to the new owners.   She will be used as well as loved.  That is perhaps the most important bit.   :)
