Title: Secret crushes you have had
Post by: Charlotte on 07 May, 2008, 10:10:59 am
I'll start with Ace from Doctor Who.  I thought she was way cool.

...but I wasn't very imaginative, I'm afraid.

In this thread, points to be awarded for obscurity, strangeness and sheer perversity  :)

I have been told my very first crush was a red tractor - but sticking to people I can be fairly sure it was Halo Jones

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_Jones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halo_Jones)

Alas it was never going to happen.

I also fancied the friend of Skizz - but to my shame I don't even remember her name.

Do they have to be secret?

Dr. Tanya Byron and Clea DuVall.  But that's not very secret.

Too many to list, really, but Harriet Wheeler, Louise Lombard (even though the House Of Eliott sucked), Gillian Anderson, Kylie, Britney (before she turned into a trailer-trash nightmare), Emmanuelle Beart and Trinity from The Matrix.  Not Carrie-Ann Moss (who is, frankly, quite plain), Trinity.  It must be the leather catsuit.

In the hypothetical scenario that I started batting for the other side, it would be Ian Ogilvy from "The Saint", Fox Mulder and Johnny Depp (along with everyone else, M or F, I expect).

When I was about 15 I greatly admired my French teacher, a Miss Hazel Wengrove. It became evident at a parents' evening that the feeling was mutual as she told my parents what a "good-looking young man" I was.  ???

There was a young biology teacher named Mrs. Batts when I was in the sixth form whom I inadvertently knocked over when rushing round a corner. She went flying backwards and displayed a good deal (or not, as the case may be) of skimpy 1971 underwear, much to our mutual acute embarrassment. I was deeply apologetic - it had been entirely my fault - but she was very good about it. For the rest of my time in school, which was only a few months, every time we passed in a corridor we would exchange a smile and a blush.

Not long after the said incident I met her husband, a vet, who came to operate on a neighbour's dog. I was enlisted to hold the animal, a large mongrel, down, and Mr. Batts recognised my sixth form scarf. I kept to myself my opinion that he was a lucky man to have a wife with such a fine taste in knickers.

My early crushes coincided with the rising star of indie music, and dark haired pixie-faced skinny girls with guitars.

Apart from my English teacher Liz Bell in 8'th grade as well as Kim Wilde, Kate Bush, Debbie Harry and the lot, I had a short crush just a couple of weeks ago. Were watching Rachel Weisz in "Runaway Jury" on TV when my heart struck an extra couple of beats. Think I had a fuzzy-warm dream that night...!

Gillian Anderson.

And (coincidence, seeing this thread now), a couple of minutes ago I bumped into a very nice French lady who used to try to teach me French at Adult Ed. classes until about a year ago. I wasn't at my best, having just cycled 40 miles and somewhat unshaven, but there was a certain tension as we chatted. If you know what I mean.  ;)  She's a couple of years older than me and single (separated I think still) and I'm definitely not. Oh well...

It's probably just the accent.  ;D

PS Don't mention it to Mrs nicknack! (She knows about Gillian).

Am I going to have to fight with you, as well as my mother, for the affections of Alan and Harrison?

My mother and I both like Mel Gibson (when he was younger - think of him in the leathers in the first Mad Max  :P )...  it's really sad when you drool over the same men as your mother.   :-\

Is that your way of making sure they're yours, like licking the last digestive?

Gerroff! I saw her first!

And yeah, I'll agree with Bettany Hughes & Dr Alice Roberts too. And most of the pixie-faced brunettes, especially if they've got a razor-sharp bob hairstyle

I'll also add Joanne Whalley - initially as  'Grease-me-up' Nurse Mills  (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://dyk.homestead.com/files/JW16.jpg&imgrefurl=http://dyk.homestead.com/JWGallery.html&h=213&w=197&sz=9&hl=en&start=55&um=1&tbnid=RE-DfHu2kH8t-M:&tbnh=106&tbnw=98&prev=/images%3Fq%3DJoanne%2BWhalley%2Bnurse%26start%3D54%26ndsp%3D18%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DN) in The Singing Detective and later as Christine Keeler in  Scandal  (http://www.cinemovies.fr/images/data/films/Pfilm39631599857759.jpg) :P

I also like pixie-types. For the longest time, I was totally smitten by the Fremch-Chinese girl I met on a school French exchange, but she didn't notice, at least not until it was too late. Bjork would have done for me... I like independent, creative, quirky and a hint of danger too.

But these days I am married to an independent, creative, quirky and slightly dangerous pixie-sized (Japanese) brunette, so I no longer have any need for secret crushes!

Also, Harriet Wheeler from The Sundays - mainly because of her angelic voice.

And it's a shame computer screens aren't tall and thin otherwise I'd have that foxy Diana Rigg picture as my desktop.

I suspect a few Bond Girls are on the list somewhere.

Variously over the years:
Beth Orton - singer/songwriter
(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh288/whackson/Misc/bethorton1.jpg)
Cat Power - singer/songwriter
(http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh288/whackson/Misc/chan_marshall.jpg)
Scout Niblett - singer/songwriter (on a bike!)

Do you see a theme here? I actually met Cat Power in the pub at Butlins, Camber Sands, in 2004 (it was hosting a music festival called All Tomorrows Parties). She came and sat down at the table I was at - we were both pretty toasted and just pulled faces at each other.

And I also just remembered:
Solex - singer/songwriter!
She owns a second hand CD shop in Amsterdam, I went there (on my Brompton) one time with the express interest of saying hello to her, but when I got there she looked like she was in a right mood, so I bottled it!

All fine and talented ladies...

Well her real name is Emma Louise Niblett and the Scout bit is inspired by the character Jean Louise "Scout" Finch, from Harper Lee's 'To Kill a Mockingbird'. I don't think that's silly or pretentious - she's an artist and she's honouring a hero of hers.

Did you know that gold-faced General Klytus (snigger) was played by "Jason King" actor Peter Wyngarde, who was arrested after being caught in flagrante delicto with a truck driver in Gloucester bus station lavatories?

Sorry, but those of you with crushes on cartoon characters clearly need urgent help.  Sorting such people as you out has to be what the NHS was invented for.

I have nothing but pity for you, your lives must be blighted.  Go and have meaningful relationships with your bicycles, I do.  They are living beings that talk to you, help you through the bad time and celebrate the good times with you.

Your bicycles have souls you can engage with.  Stop lusting after the graphical representations of someone else’s imagination, its not healthy and people will point and laugh at you.

For a lot of 1983 I was desperately distracted by a gorgeous lady wiggling her way around the grounds of a factory in sunny Tiverton.  I pursued her in what I hoped was a casually manly manner.

But I think my thigh waders and helmet put her off...

In 1978 I worked for Marconi in , er crumbs, somewhere I can't even remember now, and used to manufacture desperate excuses to spend hours wandering the site trying to catch up with quite the foxiest girl that ever worked in any accounts department anywhere. Tight split skirts really do something to a teenage beasts hormones..

Mrs. Batts: No running in the corridor thank you Mr Bagger.  Now, go back and walk.  I said walk.  Go back up there and come down here slowly.  Take your time.

The real stuff 'aint anywhere as interesting because there's generally not pictures and arguments about whether someone IS fanciable. But....

I was a lanky, spotty, ugly, geeky kid with terrible hair and no confidence so had plenty time to develop and harbour crushes that would never, and could never, come to anything.

At primary school I once cried myself to sleep because Nicola Macintosh didn't fancy me. For a while she practically filled every pre-pubescent thought.

At secondary there were two objects of affection.

Joanne Kenyon was simply stunning. Very quiet. Much older boyfriend with a car. She once donated money to a sponsored thing I was doing and I kept the sponsorship form for a year because she'd written on it. I vaguely knew her brother (who ended up in prison for some rather unsavoury stuff, and about whom I once got a bottle smashed over my head in a bizarre case of 'sort of' mistaken identity).

But the ongoing one, through the whole of secondary, I can't even at the moment remember the name of (Louise Taylor rings a bell but just doesn't sound 'right'). Needless to say she was really part of the 'in' crowd, and we were house captains together in 6th year. Earlier than that (in third year I think) we were both on the same French exchange trip and she simply tormented me the whole trip (the one time I smoked was that trip because she'd offered me the fag).

I can still remember a trip to a castle somewhere near Besancon and I was sitting in one of the big windows and she leant over my legs to look out and my adolescent mind went wild as her already adequately formed breasts rested on my legs. That moment kept me going until I got my first girlfriend.

When I was 20.

Secret crushes are fecking painful in those circumstances!

EDIT: Lynne Reid was her name! Lousie Taylor was a crush at uni! We were great friends, until I asked her out. By email.

I was a lanky, spotty, ugly, geeky kid with terrible hair and no confidence so had plenty time to develop and harbour crushes that would never, and could never, come to anything.

And look at you now--tall, confident, secretly ogled by at least one forum member, a proud member of the cycling community, in possession of a fine stable of bikes.

In short, you've squandered a fine heritage. You could have spent these last years cultivating your natural abilities, but no--you've spent all that energy "improving yourself" and "maturing." Feh.

Think of what you might have had--the rich array of unnerving public behaviors, the ever more complex and powerful odors as you developed into a fully awkward adulthood, the complete disconnection of self-image from reality, the truly transcendent social ineptitude.

Still, to each his own; in this day and age, it's best for the rest of us to accept and respect your lifestyle choices. But please--don't hate me for being what you might have been.

When I was 16/17 Harriet Wheeler, partly because of the red hair, partly because of her voice on Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. I went to see them at the T&C and it got cancelled because of her having a cold. By the time they rescheduled, I was going to raves, and blew out that gig to go to an Energy do, which in turn got cancelled (that story ends with me dancing onstage with Adamski and Orbital in front of 21000 people)

Around the same time, Miki Berenyi. I stole her songlist off her mic in Brighton, then saw her soon after at a "secret" Ultra Vivid Scene gig and she said hello (being 6'2 with half a foot of pillarbox red hair in a spike can get you recognised, I guess).Swoon.

Mrs. Batts, a very athletic young Biology teacher when I was in the sixth form. I had long since given up biology as an academic subject, but when I inadvertently knocked her over in a manner to give me an unrestricted, if brief, view of her stocking-tops and none-too-voluminous knickers, from that point on whenever we met in the corridor she invariably blushed and smiled. It was most becoming.

Hellooooooo Dr. Hannah Fry.

I saw her give a lecture at the RI a couple of years ago; she's frikkin' *awesome*.

Dr Suzannah Lipscomb is the current favourite. Bit of an annoyingly posh voice, but no bloke actually listens to what she's saying.

In my experience, quite a lot of blokes aren't complete arseholes.

I learned much of interest about witches, and just how much of a dick King James VI/I was, from Dr Lipscomb's series last year.  The hair is secondary.  Just as it is with Rebekah Brooks, while we're on the subject of witches.

that name didnt ring any bells, but I now realise that we saw a bit of her prog about the mechanics/maths of dating last week. She was cool (and cute).

The first suggested google search is "dr hannah fry age". ::-) Oh well.

Most of the news anchors she gets plonked in front of find it difficult to avoid getting distracted.

There was a classic example on "The Daily Politics' the other week, where Michael Portillo got round the problem by simply not looking at her.

I thought Michael Portillo got round the problem by virtue of batting for the other side.  Or was that all in the past?

He was, last time I looked, on the list of famous bisexuals.

Anyway, you know you're in trouble when you have a secret crush on Michael Portillo.  (For the avoidance of doubt: Not me!)

History fans will no doubt be aware already that Dr Lipscomb's new series, Hidden Killers Of The Post War Home, starts on Wednesday.  BBC4, 20:00.

According to this TV listings magazine she's a vegetarian chiz.

Whilst one certainly cannot deny the attractions of young Florence (desperately trying not to make any "boing!" Magic Roundabout references) it was her predecessor Camille, who I found utterly enchanting to the extent that I consider her to be possibly the most beautiful woman I've ever seen on TV.  Her characterisation was brilliant, too.

It was not too much of a secret crush at home, Mrs W almost had to provide a dribble guard for me, for when I was watching her on Death in Paradise!

Portillo? I didn't think there was any suspicion that he'd find the attractiveness of a woman distracting.
