Ther's much more to modern circus than there was to the tired old style shows with animals and clowns*
The term Physical Theatre is sometimes used, and there is a bit of crossover with dance. Also gymnastics (floor work and tumbling) Tradition lives on in spectacles that rely on skill, strength and daring.
I must admit to a late conversion, and a bias. EMinor is heavily into circus and recommends the good ones when they perform locally.
If you get the chance, go to see a French circus gruop called Tsuica. They are brilliant. And there are some great bicycle stunts in their current show.
