Security issue
« on: 07 October, 2018, 01:40:38 pm »
After a number of attempts, I think I have the Chrome OS on an 8 gig USB stick. I have rearranged the boot options to USB HDD and on booting the laptop up I got a green screen with the warning that the USB was not allowed to be bootable due to a "security setting".

I am stumped.

Any ideas welcome please.

It will be in your BIOS settings, hit <whatever key appropriate for your laptop - F12? F3? Del? F10?> to enter BIOS on startup and look for security settings or, boot settings.

It's F1. Nothing I can see under security though.

Was it a second hand ex-corporate machine, or yours from new?

UEFI  boot issue ? See if there is a BIOS option to turn UEFI off. It might say something like UEFI or legacy mode. Chose legacy.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

We bought it new.

Will check the UEFI thing in the morning. Full of the cold and now wine so morning is more sensible.

UEFI is a an extended BIOS thing that deliberately prevents booting from "untrusted" sources.
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

pcolbeck has it right.  You should look in the BIOS and find the UEFI Settings. You probably will have to enable 'legacy' mode or something like that.

In the security page there are three lines of text referring to passwords all of which are followed by CLEAR

Below them are a further four lines then the UEFI but I cannot get the lines below the ones followed by clear to change colour so cannot even get onto that UEFI line.

Thoughts please?

You'll have to turn off 'Secure Boot' first, in order to activate the settings to swap the UEFI to Legacy.

Is there also a Windows Boot Manager that you don't want to use any more?

I went through the steps in the link above but the access to the last step was not there so I am suspecting it is deliberately not available and possibly not available at all. Going to be more time effective to do something else it seems.
