We're about half-way through Twin Peaks for the 3rd(?) time. Fun.

Best actor
Tough year:

Eddie Redmayne – The Theory of Everything as Stephen Hawking

Nominees:
Steve Carell – Foxcatcher as John Eleuthère du Pont
Bradley Cooper – American Sniper as Chris Kyle
Benedict Cumberbatch – The Imitation Game as Alan Turing
Michael Keaton – Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) as Riggan Thomson

And I've just noticed it was the year of Whiplash* - which is much about jazz drumming, so probably sounded exactly like Birdman!

(JK Simmons beat Ed Norton to Best Supporting Actor /Trivia )

* which is yet another film I haven't seen but want to. Strewth, I hardly saw anything actually made in 2014! [and I don't mean American Sniper, no offence Bradley ... ]

I dunno why it didn't really grab me. I enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok, thought it balanced humour with action well. Black Panther just seemed to miss something. A lot of the action scenes were very good

car chase was outstanding. The final battle was too full of tropes for me and reminded me of the last narnia film.

I too enjoyed Thor: Ragnarok.  Probably because I can't take any superhero movie seriously, so humour's the best way to make them work.  It also tends to break up the protracted fight scenes; fights are more interesting if funny stuff happens.

(I've realised that when I watch video on my computer, I tend to flip to another workspace and catch up on email/twitter/YACF/whatever during fight scenes, car chases and sex scenes.  Make of that what you will.)

Get Out

Superb. Much funnier than I was expecting, but also deeply unsettling in that thoroughly entertaining way that good horror is. And I’m not normally a fan of horror but I loved it.

AlphaGo

The film/documentary of the Deepmind company's attempt to build an AI to take on the best GO player in the World.

It was riveting actually.  I had no idea just how big the game of GO is in China and Korea, it's literally given the same sort of coverage as Soccer is in the UK, with live punditry and move by move analysis.

Anyway, it covers the tournaments with the European Champion, Fan Hui, a mere 2nd Dan professional GO player and then the tournament with legendary Lee Sedol 9th Dan, a savant of the game if ever there was one.  Seedol sees the game as if he has access to the Matrix, he's quite extraordinary (and 18 times World Champion by the age of 32).

The way that AlphaGo went beyond usual hard-coded playing techniques rattled both players from the start.  They were clearly expecting to play a program based on a collection of human-based moves from history but AlphaGo went beyond that, and played moves no top player ever woud.  Lee Sedol called it "creative" and said it was a paradigm shift* in how to play GO.

Fascinating stuff and a glimpse into where AI could help humankind solve difficult issues by looking at them from a different point of view.

*AlphaGo played with the understanding that it only needed to win by the smallest margin, whereas humans tend to look to capture the most territory they can.
In this respect it truly played "the long game" and, at times, looked like it was making errors.....to the humans watching on.
Some people say I'm self-obsessed but that's enough about them.

The problem with a lot of modern superhero films is that they take themselves far too seriously.

This has been my theory for a while: there's something innately ridiculous about superheroes that taking it seriously seems to be, well, missing the point. I loved Thor: Ragnarok and GOTG. I mean seriously, do we need to sit down and write an essay about what motivates a gun-toting cybernetic raccoon. That seriousness is what I find a bit offputting about the Marvel stuff on Netflix, it's all a bit po-faced. Anyway, Black Panther next weekend in mildly pointless 3D (I'm not, tbh, sure why they bother with 3D).

Yes, and Get Out is very good.

The first time I heard Undone, I was actually out walking the dog on Tankerton Slopes at the time. I tweeted about this and as a result Ben Moor now follows me on Twitter. Ben Moor grew up in Whitstable, and Colin Anderson, the producer of Undone, lives in Whitstable. (Maybe this should go in the tenuous claims to fame thread.)

On the flight to Houston yesterday

Bladerunner 2049  - need to watch that again as a titchy 6" screen does not do the cinematography any justice at all.
A planet of the apes thing - fuck me that was tedious!  Spun out way too long, and the only decent character there was Maurice the orang-utan.

The Shape of Water

Very beautifully shot, let down by being utterly predicable. Still a lovely film.

Considering that a significant of Bladerunner 2049's screen-time is dedicated to moodily swirling petrochemical smog, just visit Houston in summertime for the 4D PetroVision version.

Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay.  Not a patch on the first film, although the bit where Kumar is having a dump was a promising start and the usual Neil Patrick Harris scenes are just bonkers.
