Great ride out.  An ostensibly chilly night, but in fact plenty warm enough once we were moving.  (I got chilly hands after leaving the pub, but that often happens to me after a stop).

The Swan is a Greene King house, so the Ale selection ranged through the IPA and Abbot as well as a couple of their other brews - Fireside Ale ("Westgate brewery") which I didn't try and Gangly Ghoul of which I had several.  It's a strange feature of the English language that the plural of "Gangly Ghoul" is "Dangly Goolies".

Friday is getting to me and I am just pondering this The Poor Student

Thinking early drive over....Ride....Food and Home...what better way to start the year (other than just sitting at home or in a warm pub with food and beer)

Any other potential idiots takers?

Errr no but it's a good suggestion. I have a pathalogical dislike of travelling to rides unless absolutely necassary but applaud those who can be arsed. Where would AUK be if everyone was a tosser like me?

At some point, I will start applying me mind to my 2015 ride programme in support of my PBP attempt. All are welcome to join me and I'm more than happy to tag along with other folk's good ideas.

I'll be up for a couple. Probably tag along for 300 and 400 (assuming you will be doing Tomsk's calendars?) When I get round to it I'll turn my mind to a lost railways of Essex and Suffolk 200 DIY at some point if you fancy. Also mid summer 600 starting at Darlington in N Yorks and back to Essex via Yorkshire Dales and Peak District?

I like the idea of your railway ride Chris. I shall no doubt use my non-audax rides to tick off a few more GBG Essex pubs.

Tippers, you are a bad man for putting such thoughts in my head  :hand:

In other news, I'm unlikely to out this coming Wednesday evening, in case anyone was thinking about doing any advance planning.

I'll be around on Wednesday.  Probably need to set off a little later than usual though.

Go on, you know you want to! If there are no takers I might have a crack at a DIY, not sure I can be bothered driving all that way just for me.

Looks like they are accepting entries up until the day before more or less so I am going to hold off a bit yet but the intent is definitely there.

Going to try to make Wednesday night...as it looks like a reduced crowd would anyone be interested in heading to The Sun in Feering?

I'm happy to plot out a route

Dez has been ploughing through some ancient photographs of mine and he found this one, from some time in the mid-1970s.

I don't remember whether those were our bikes or not. I suspect that they weren't.

Judging by the chimney pots, I'd say Tiger's Island.  Extensively remodelled and extended now though if it is that one.

I did wonder that it was.  Just had a peep at their website and I think you could be right.  As you say the place has undergone quite a transformation in the intervening years (assuming we're right)

Wow, have you got any more old photos of pubs we all know?

It is indeed Tiger's Island.

I'll have a delve through the archives. I didn't do a great deal of cycling in those days and was more dependent on my brother's driving licence. We used to go to the Viper quite regularly. My bro-in-law was a member of the Velocette Owner's Club so the Viper was an obvious (provided that you are aware that there was a motor bike called a Velocette Viper) choice. However, that place hasn't changed and that, of course, is one of its great attractions.

I have a number of pictures of houses that used to be pubs. That's the Pretty Lady, Ranks Green, a Ridley pub in days of yore. Annie in the foreground.

'Yulefest' at The Compasses kicks off this Thursday, with carol singing at 8:30pm - anybody going? Or is Wednesday a better bet for a MEMWNS ride?

I could do Wednesday this week as I am off Thursday and Friday (Family Goings on). No worries of others are more keen on Thursday though.

Tomsk, have you got plans for the Santa Special? I am planning on Riding up to Great Bromley as the car will be in use. I see there is a path right along the Dual Carriageway out of Colchester so hopefully the weather plays along.

I'm not about on Wednesday evening I'm afraid. It's Christmas [groan] which means I spend my evenings getting pissed with customers and colleagues in London.  Sorry folks.
