I haven't seen it elsewhere on here so here's the link to Steve's live tracking page: http://trackleaders.com/oneyeartimetrial15i.php?name=Steve_Abraham
It includes links to the other two riders who are attempting the record.
-
Exciting stuff. Steve is looking good, he's rode 95 miles before I've eaten breakfast or "Tarzan" and "IronOx" have even got out of bed.
-
IronOx?
-
Tarzan starts in a few days (he wants the advantage of seeing Steve's progress).
-
he wants the advantage of seeing Steve's progress.
He won't have any advantage. We all know that Steve is the best! :)
-
On the tracking page it quotes a straight tracking distance covered which is I believe going to be less than the real mileage as it looks like there is 2 - 3 mins between data points.
How/where is the true mileage logged and verified ?
-
Oh no I can see this getting addictive. Is there an app for my phone? ;D
-

Presumably the tracking is real time, so is radio linked (a cellphone module in the unit, I'd guess), but the same device could retain a continuous track record, with a far higher time resolution, which would have a much smaller error in the total mileage. You wouldn't necessarily want to upload that track continuously, since it would be expensive, but it can be downloaded and retained periodically for record confirmation purposes.
-
I'm not going to get much done this year by following this ;D
-
He's currently on some of the roads I cycle, so it's niceto be able to visualise where he is.
-
Thanks Nuncio!
-
Actual distance will be published once GPS tracklogs loaded to Strava tonight. Strava widget will go live on website later today.
-
Thanks Nuncio!
Yes, I was just looking for the very link myself.
Fantastic we can follow his progress.
This can only be a good thing for him too - keep the interest and the support going.
-
As long as there are no malevolent souls out there (and it would be rather surprising if there weren't 1 or 2) who could use this to locate him and run him off the road / throw a stick in his spokes / etc.
-
What's the weather like over there? It's dreadful here (SA39). Rain - no big deal, I suppose, but very strong winds with nasty powerful gusts - quite a big deal, I imagine.
It's heading west east, so I hope Steve finishes before it arrives.
Or at least makes sure he's riding in the right direction.
Edited to correct direction of weather.
-
What's the weather like over there? It's dreadful here (SA39). ...
Given the climate of the British Isles, and his necessity to keep the miles totaling up, I'd imagine that Steve is resigned to cycling through some pretty awful weather!
-
Post amended to correct direction weather is travelling.
-
Less than 75000 miles to go

I can't stop checking the tracking page.
-
It would be neat to see on a map all his whereaboutes throughout the year. With heat map colour coding for
no of visits of places/routes! Is something like that possible?
-
The total on there is not correct either as it only started at Buckingham at 01.01.
He would have done an hours riding before it started tracking.
-
'Our man in the UK' has a proper name :)
It is clear to me that Steve needs a nickname to compete with Tarzan and IronOx. I will throw my hat into the ring with Steve 'Pasty' Abraham. If it is adopted he could get sponsored by Ginsters . Mind you the financial impact of providing free pasties might put them off.

I can't stop checking the tracking page.
Yes, I know what you mean. If it carries on like this I can see me needing to get some professional help.
Doing my income tax has given way to watching some geezer on a pushbike, represented by dots on a screen, looking to clock up 200 hundred odd miles, riding round north Bucks.
-

Is he on a set route today Rich or just improvising with his knowledge of local roads? That last stop in Bicester almost looked like a spur of the moment thing after he had started to head west again.
Looks like he's got some very decent weather over the next few days so he might fancy his chances of getting a fair few decent miles on the clock right from the outset.
Right...back to tax.
-
Think he was just riding, although he must have had some idea of the distance and time to get to the start of the TT.
The Bicester food stop was planned and mentioned on here a while ago.

Once the Strava rides start building up the admin people can create a Heatmap there and show or link to it from the website and update it which will show exactly that.
-
Does anyone know how to get that tracking site to display temperatures in something sensible, such as Centigrade? Either that or not display them at all!
-
Click on Map Layers. Piss about checking/unchecking weather Conditions and Cloud Cover whilst occasionally clicking Refresh Location. It will eventually go away. But will then come back again later just to annoy you :P
Edit: 200 miles up!
-
Yep and he's nearly home - the track has now decided to show the correct start point as opposed to Buckingham. So some well deserved rest on the near horizon.
-
I assume that the tracking web site won't show travel to and from Steve's home. Obvious reasons. Also it is calculating each point to point in a straight line. So the tracking site will be an underestimate?
Will the main web site keep us up to date with actual miles covered each day?
-
The SPOT tracker does at the moment. It might be worthwhile activating a localised privacy setting, though there are several flats in the near vicinity.
TG has multiple GPSs and they are recording actual distances. The SPOT is to show where he is riding in real time so that people can go on the road and check he is actually pedalling the miles.
-
You can google his address quite easily, so tracking anonymity is a bit of a waste of time.
-
204.74 miles today

Thanks.
However I've got both options unchecked yet it's still displaying temperature >:(

204.74 miles today
222.7 on strava
-
The 204.74 mile value would be better, since that's very close to the average distance he needs every day, 205.66 miles!
-
Tommy rode 234 on Jan 1st
-

Besides if somebody burgled his flat, he probably wouldn't notice the difference
-
It was very, very windy here (Worcestershire) so I'm guessing it wasn't too disimilar where Steve was riding. That would have made today a lot harder than it should have been.
-
Does anyone know how to download Steve's daily track from Strava? I have a premium account, but don't seem to be able to (possibly because he has privacy settings set to prevent this).
I have an idea for visualizing his progress, but would need access to each day's tracklog to do this.

No idea. I only have the cheapskate free account. I just followed this tweet on Twitter.

Ok, it looks like I had to wait for Steve (or rather I hope one of his helpers) to accept my 'follow request' before the download link appeared.

Yup, no need (and he's got 2 names on the go already, that's enough for most of us!)
But my Two Ronnies nerve is tickled by the name Tommy2 Parry.
-

After your previous work I'm very much looking forward to this Jo.

One does hope that TG finds some time over the year for making a record sized CDC from the tracks.
-

Behave!!
(I could plot a route.........)
-
I had to look. Looks like he's at the Royal Hop Pole!
-
He should turn it into Tour d'Weatherspoons :D
It would be good if he rode a few circles from Tewkesbury this afternoon & then joined us on the Jan Sale tomorrow, but I suspect tomorrow's route will be far too hilly for what Steve's doing
-
It'll be interesting to see when he gets bored of starting Westwards! Takes a lot of gumption to deliberately give yourself an afternoon+evening of stiff headwind.
Hopefully there will be some still days and/or Easterlies soon, to give him some route variety. (ideally without too much ice).
-

I'd have thought that keeping an eye on the weather is going to be hugely significant and he'll almost certainly plan his rides round it. If he does have any freedom at all [and in the context of the enormity of the undertaking it's not much] it's being able to choose to go where he wants when he wants, and any boredom that might set in because of being restricted by the weather, will always be off set by the knowledge that he could be elsewhere in a much less favourable environment. Miles is the main thing, if he's clocking those, he'll be happy. Tomorrow looks a bit damp though.
-
Yes. And a significant ice risk early on Sunday. Keep to the main roads, I reckon.
-
Heading East today past me, if I wasn't so lazy and bug filled today I could have set off after him.
Quote on Faceache from "ironOx"
"i am not starting UNTIL 4 January SUNDAY, my official start date. Yesterday was just a check, since i put new batteries in the SPOT tracker. Thanks for following Shusanah Pillinger and Chris Davies, this is going to fun and interesting, since i will also be doing this around my work."
Good luck with that then :o
-
He was never going to be a serious contender. It'll be interesting to see if he gets much further than Steve did in 2007, when he racked up 405 AUK points plus utility riding around a fulltime job.
-
With a name like that he was never going to be serious, surely?
I mean, like, he needs a name to strike fear into the hearts of the opposition. A name such as, for instance,
.

That's exciting.
Is there any way to use the tracker to look at just the current day's riding? It's going to get awfully complicated with the many layers showing.

You think THAT'S complicated - give it another 6 days, 6 weeks, 6 months....

Jo, if you haven't done already.
Open the days ride
click the GPX icon which is in the top corner of the map window
you should then get a save, or save as option. I do, no problem with a premium account.
-
Thanks for that. The problem was that when I originally posted I had not yet had my 'follow request' approved. Only once following did the GPX link appear.
I'm currently working on (a fairly simple) web-based interactive visualization of Steve's progress based on the GPX files and some other data. I'll share as soon as it is ready.
-
Stalking tip :P
If your out on your bike trying to check Steve's progress I found the blue dot app loads up quicker than the track leaders page http://app.bluedot.mobi
Watchers of previous races, Tour divide and The Transcontinental tend to refer to each other as blue dot watchers.
-
The tracking site is understandably already becoming a bit of a maze as Steve sticks close to home to begin with. The web-site doesn't seem to give the option but could it possible to see each day's ride afresh?
-
I understand that the site is being adjusted to allow viewing of individual days but it might take a little longer yet.
-

See individual days on Strava now.
-
Strava identifies each previous day's route but does not do so for Steve's current day, until uploaded. The tracker is meant to show where he is in real time and where he has been.
The blue dot tracker noted above does give Steve's current position.

OK, got that working. I see the blue dot but no track. Does it not do that?
-
+1
Probably less of an issue with those other events, where it's fairly obvious what direction the riders are heading, the lack of a route line means it doesn't tell you much if you're not actively blue dot watching...
-

It seems to now show only the current days track with the points on it and the older as just a line.

Yup. I'd say that's a big imnprovement.
-
Has anyone looked into getting a live (kml?) feed of the spot tracking data so we can mash this up ourselves? Or are we limited to what is on the trackleaders site?
-
Total mileage seems to have dissappeared from the tracker site (http://trackleaders.com/oneyeartimetrial15i.php?name=Steve_Abraham). ???
-

Yes. Because it's misleading wrong. The sample rate is too low to give an accurate distance. Strava is definitive.
-
If I could, id vote for putting it back!
By now we all know it's under-reading (which is better than over-reading), and a few miles doesn't matter.
It was perfectly good for telling the difference between 150-mile days and 300 i.e. is today a long/fast/slow/short one? Has he had a mare somewhere?
-
If I could, id vote for putting it back!
Me too.
-
yup, please reinstate the mileage. It gives us a much better idea of distance even if it's not wholly accurate.
-
The problem is the number of queries it generates from Steve's increasingly numerous but often not IT or cycling savvy followers. Answering them all is a time-sink.
-
It was about 8% out every day - so getting more and more meaningless on the cumulative basis -- so after a couple of months -- it would have been so far out as to be totally irrelevant
Roger
-
Just checked strava - 1,535km = 953 miles which works out at 190 miles per day. He is on schedule.
Hope Steve is feeling well. He will need to eat lots of good food not just calories - fruit and veg will have to be consumed in high quantities.
BB
-
Anyone else think that the "moving average speed" is incorrect? It doesn't seem to be consistent with the individual speeds shown for each segment, which are in general much lower than the quoted average.

I'm sure he shoved a slice of cucumber & tomato in his Subway lunch in Thatcham today (well, that's where it looks like his tracker went to ;D)

His PLAN for Jan is for 5270 miles a daily average of 170 - see the full plan under the preparation section on the web site.
What i do not know - and I dont think the team has discussed this at all is -- do we look for a day off towards the end of the month - if it obvious that he has 5270 under his belt.

He should take a day off and do something recreational...like go for a ride on his bike ;D
-
No days off unless absolutely unavoidable. Tommy had one day off in the year. Perhaps a slightly shorter day to knock back any sleep debt but that is entirely up to Steve, not his support team.
-
I've no experience of the magnitude of what Steve is trying but my instinct is to agree with LWaB, even though he's from a factory that may have processed Australians. If Steve feels fine he should ride, to hedge against the days he doesn't feel up to it or is prevented by, say, a sandstorm. I would have thought the fewer plans and goals, the better. That said, and I hope he succeeds, he wouldn't go down in my estimation at all if he packed in tomorrow!
-
Given that the weather at this time of year could enforce a very light day on him, or even a day without any riding at all, I would think that, as long as he is physically OK churning out these miles, then carry on building up a buffer. I'm aware he is behind what the overall daily average will have to be at the end of the year, but the ideal situation for Steve is to be reducing the daily requirement to the record by the vernal equinox.
If we get a re-run of last Feb/March, when it never stopped raining, or 2013, when we had those bitterly cold north-easterlies for weeks on end, he'll be glad of a few miles in the bank.
-

According to http://phased.co.uk/tommy-godwin-faq/ he had a rest day on October 28th, to meet the HRH Prince of Wales[1] presumably for tea and medals, having just broken the one-year record.
Looking at Steve's plan (http://oneyeartimetrial.org.uk/the-preparation), lets pencil that in for Nov 28 shall we?
[1] - This seems a bit queer as there was no incumbent Prince of Wales in 1939 (according to the oracle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_of_Wales)). The current Prince of Wales was not yet born, and his predecessor, Edward VIII, had already ceded the PoW title having become the jolly old King some three years prior.
-
Yep, no PoW between the accession of Edward VIII and Charles being Walesised in 1958.
I think Steve should get to meet the Queen should circumstances arise, just to see the reaction of the Palace flunkies on him eating everything in sight. Including at least one corgi.

It appears that the GPX files that can be downloaded from Strava (as a premium member) only contain the lat/long points and no time-stamps for each trackpoint. This would limit analytical and visualization potential somewhat.
I have a hacky way of grabbing the full data for each track point (lat, long, altitude, timestamp), but I am not entirely confident that this will be possible throughout the year. It also gives a minor discrepancy in distance (c.200m in 300km) compared to that reported on the Strava web page.
Does anyone know of an official way of being able to download the complete timestamped data for each day's riding?
-
Jo - have you tried the "Download all your data" button on https://www.strava.com/settings/profile
This worked for my non-premium tandem account, and appears to have timestamps on track points - sample below:

Ah righty. For Steve I was assuming you'd be in cahoots with the support team to have them do this, put the result somewhere, and you access that. But as you're asking for visualizations - presumably updating as he goes day by day - this would be very tedious. (and, it looks like strava only allows this button to be pressed every so many days anyway).
I think the "correct" answer is you develop the visualization as a web app against the strava API, like http://veloviewer.com/ or http://canini.me/eddington and then have the users in question authorize your app to pull their data and put the result somewhere public. Hoops, jump through.
One counter-example is http://strava-tools.raceshape.com/snap/ -- that appears to be able to pull complete track file for any strava activity without requiring authorization from the owner of the activity. Could be instructive to dig into how that works.

Yep, I have definitely got it wrong. The diary entry is pencil written and says "Prince of Wales". I had always assumed that it was royalty but turns out it was a pub in London. I believe a lot of cyclists used to hang out there and guess there was some sort of ceremony. I've been trying to find more details and spoke to the Pedal Club who used to meet there, but they were not formed until 1941. The plot thickens (and I've updated the FAQ)

Going to a pub is far better :D

He was teetotal
-
Teethgrinder isn't!
-
He was teetotal
Well, I didn't imagine that he necked twenty pints and got back on his bike the next day! I found visiting a pub with a bunch of cyclists to celebrate a more pleasing image than some stuffy royal reception :)
-
Sure, I can do that for my own data, but not from someone else's (i.e. Steve's, IronOx's and Tarzan's).
Contact the support team and ask for his login details? Or get one of them to send you the tracks inc. timestamps. Then if the results are good (I'm sure they will be!), you could try asking the other two lads' teams.
-
Tracker seems to be hors de combat this morning.
Worth noting for those looking for an overall distance marker, that if you scroll down you get just that on the speed plost. I wonder if it will break at any point up to 80,000? And, chapeau for that burst of downhill speed ;)
ETA - having inspected the error "ERR Blocked by client), disabling Adblock on the page makes it spring back to life
-
Also worth mentioning (as most links go direct to Steves trace) There is an overall view page for all 3 riders
http://trackleaders.com/oneyeartimetrial15
Below the map the race Flow shows overall mileage progress (with the know limitations compared to Strava) very graphically, it also shows ride to sleep proportions. So IronOx ???
If your really bored you can re-live every mile by zooming in on Steve and pressing play on the replay control box. This is great fun for a multirider race like the TCR, not so good here.
-
I see we now have an estimated daily distance :)
-
Thanks Mr N!

Perfect. That is absolutely the best thing possible - given the flawed dataset available.
