Bugger to it, I'm going to chuck an entry in. Will mean some VERY intensive training over the coming weeks and no beer, but hey, why not.

400km is not about being super-fit, it's about knowing yourself and being able to work through the bad patches.

I fully expect to die.  :D

I ride a bike every day, but I have done zero distance rides this year (Maybe a dozen 100-150km rides) due to a couple of things. It's going to be a struggle, but if I can get a couple of 200+ rides under my belt without feeling like I've been kicked all over in the next fortnight, I'll be happy.

I know I'm being a wuss for even thinking this, but there's a lot of bail out options - Penrith and Carlisle are around the halfway mark, can easily grab a train home from there. Alston is at about 300km and it's downhill from there to Haltwhistle and Hexham stations. And hey, if I make it to Alston, I might even make it back to Ingleby Barwick...

Bailing wouldn't be the end of the world, would still be a ride to build on (I'm entered in The Flatlands 600 in September).

Well that is just as well ...the super fit bit I mean.  One of my reasons for taking up Audax was to try and reduce my weight...so when I do the 400 I will be taking 2 of me (based on my sons weight) up hill (down dale I goes fine).  Not sure about working through bad patches but I can be very ,determined' (other unkindly compare my character traits to those of a mule).  Not sure I can do much about gearing I have a compact chain ring with an 11-32 on the rear...but no pride so happily push when needed (like CX I suppose)

Having had a quick look at the course, I would think 11 - 32 would be ok - I hope so, anyway.  There is some jabbiness near Sebergham on the western leg but Yad Moss is just long.  Not sure about round Slaggyford, though.....

I'm in , my first Englandshire Audax . So Maverick I hope your hard at the training with that tandem so i can follow you round . Will there be any other recumbents there?

Unfortunately I'm out, as is my daughter. Neither of us have anything like enough miles in our legs this year to stand a realistic chance of finishing the ride. Enjoy!

If I do it, it'll be on fixed. But haven't entered yet (have noted AndyC's comment below about getting an entry in). Still dithering... :/

The beds & blankets for the event are being tested for comfort by AUK's team of bed checkers at this weekends Mille Alba.
AC
I presume you meant Mille Cymru ; if so, I can confirm that they were fine for sleeping on after riding for 270km+
The only problem I had with the beds was getting off them at 5am ; I don't mean that I couldn't wake up but the transition from horizontal to vertical was a bit of a struggle with tired legs :P

Being unexpectedly free that weekend, I've just had a closer look at train fares from That London. Um, gulp.

Don't suppose there's anyone heading north who could find space in their car in return for a bit of petrol money?

I did rather balk, but it's a weekend away that I'm looking forward to.   I'm probably burning 200 quid for train/travelodge and entry.

I looked at driving, and I think you live down the road from me, but I need to be back Sunday late afternoon and don't trust myself to drive after a night on the road.   Maybe another time.

If you can get to Derby on Friday evening (tickets currently available from £29 each way) I can take you the rest of the way , leaving early(ish) Sat am.
I haven't actually entered yet but will do so if you reply.

Andy, I'm having a think about what to take with me for the ride: do the village hall stops include the provision of food?  If so, it looks like I won't have to take as much as I thought.

Cheers

Peter

All the village Hall stops will be providing a meal, and almost all of them will have smiling folk waiting to greet you.
All diets should be catered for but if you (or any other riders) have any specific dietary needs please get in touch via PM and we will do what we can to meet them.

I'll be at Slaggyford, but no-one said anything to me about having to smile.

If I'm not smiling during the ride I apologise in advance it will be due to night-shift-body-clock-f-up, ;which just adds to the mental torture!   I will be glad of the wee sleep stops.

After this year's silly efforts I shall be riding round with the venerable Mr Thomas on a Full Value basis.   Loads of time to enjoy the scenery food and cake.

Now that sounds good to me and I might try to tag along- but I am not convinced that full value is what you will finally settle for.
