More than .5km? That's quite impressive.
What's so funny about peace, love and understanding?

Altitude worth 1-1.5k according to some sources.

The previous record was set at sea level.

Would lower oxygen levels balance out the altitude benefits?

No they wouldn't, i.e. going to the Mexico track at 1800 metres is faster than doing it at sea level.

Here are tabulated power decreases vs altitude, with references to the research papers

Here is an application to the hour record with comparison to the aerodynamic savings

All that said, I didn't get to watch it sounded like a very good record, with VC being right on the edge the whole way.

He was there for a few weeks beforehand acclimatising.
It's an impressive performance, and a good record. It's also impressive commitment by Lotto Soudal, because it's probably eaten the entire spring of one of their biggest engines (and I can't imagine having him and a coach out in Mexico, plus all the equipment etc. was cheap).

There’s a few power numbers knocking around.  VK averaged 330w.  Wiggins was known to be able to push 400+.  Wiggins went at sea level and on a day that wasn’t ideal.

VK readily admitted he went to Mexico to give him the best chance.   I watched the last 40mins and his pacing seemed good.   He was lapping at 16.2/16.3 and dropped to about 16.5 but was then able to lift for the last 5/10 mins.   He wasn’t carried off his bike so maybe a little left in the tank ?

Matt Bottrill was involved in the coaching and aero testing which is good for his exposure.

BTW still shorter than Rominger did in a legal position in the 90s at sea level.

Yeah, I was trying to avoid a clean/doped discussion, but I’m pretty sure that Rominger admitted to having a blood transfusion the day before his second attempt.
