Author Topic: FNRttC Cambridge to Kings Lynn August 30th (Read 5572 times)

Almost Dutch. From the Greens of Cambridge across Fenland, a vast watery landscape of rivers, peat beds and marshes. A short stretch of bridleway, followed by the only climb to The Ship of The Fens, Ely Cathedral at all of 26 metres above sea level. Onwards along canal banks with sodium-lit crop picking to our halfway stop at Welney Wetland Centre. Final leg through a village named for us to the Cathedral of Marshland at Terrington St Clement and then West Lynn for a ferry (£1.20) to our destination. Meet in front of Cambridge station by 23.30 for midnight start. Cheapest trains from London are from Liverpool Street, alternatively faster but more expensive from King's Cross. Cycles are allowed on both routes, no reservation required. King's Lynn trains return direct to King's Cross. A ride of 110km, with just 340m climbing. And no shelter if there's a headwind.

Probably between 2 & 2.30 a.m.
But we don't let riders join part way. There are others coming to the start from Ely, and riding back there after breakfast.

I don't think there's a rule against cheering the ride on or distributing CAKE, thobut.

I think I've only ever been out this way once, but I think this ride has epic potential.

It sounds to me like a Very Good Idea. The trouble is I will probably be Oop Noorth in hilly regions when it is happening.

I'd like to do this one but have somehow found myself having to endure the second part of Harry Potter and the Ridiculously Convoluted Plot in London that evening so won't be able to get to the start on time, even by train

I think Chris & Mrs were on their Tandem, but I belive they packed before Lynn. Lynsay, Kim, Greg, Teethgrinder & myself camped outside Lynn, and return rode, into a headwind to Ely the following day.

The reason I'm asking is that I'm in London that day taking my disabled son to the Nat Hit Museum, and no idea when I'll be back. Your route, if taking NCN 11 through Ely to Downham market passes less than 500m from my doorstep. I know I can get that far in time, but not sure about Cambridge.

Just bought train tickets; not too expensive though still not cheap and I'll spend a lot of time travelling but I think it'll be worth it.
I'm going to have a lot of time to kill in KL before my 13.44 train home.

Unfortunately, I can't make it. Although Cambridge to King's Lynn is a favourite ride (some of you may have done one of my King's Lynn rides in the past).

Should be riding back to Ely from King's Lynn to make 162km. Bit of a wiggle en route to make up the distance. Different route back.

May need to drive 1000 miles to Scotland and back either next weekend or the FNRTTC weekend. If I'm free on 30th, I'm hoping to sign on as another Ely Rider.

It's starting to look as if we have enough Ely riders to organise an event of our own...

I've finally got around to filling in the registration form.
Work has had me away from home for a few days (ironically enough in Kings Lynn; yes, I did take a bike). I forgot to register before the trip and I didn't have my CUK info with me.
I'll be back in KL again Tue-Thu next week. Not really where I want to be but needs must, sigh. Originally I'd planned to be elsewhere......

Even if I hadn't already bought the train tickets I wouldn't have stayed over 'til Friday (work would have paid for the hotel) because it would have meant driving home after the ride and that is A BAD THING.
