If it got that cold in SW15, it would probably be a record braking low for London.

Where did it come from, the Met Office, or one of the other sites like XCWeather or Metcheck?  I'd be more tempted to believe a number from the Met Office, rather than the others who are generally doing something like interpolating data from a much coarser model, and probably not accounting for things like the Urban Heat Island effect of London (which will be pretty significant).

If it does look like it's going to get that cold, closer to the time, I had better get my studded tyres on the commuter, since ice (and probably snow) is going to be certain.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Time to get the hackbike (still has the Marathon Winter studded tyres on from last year) out of the shed. :)

How did you find those tyres if you had to ride on normal road surfaces? I might invest.

Fine, you're supposed to wear them in on normal roads for 50km before real use so I commuted on them for a couple of days. Only added a few minutes to my 26 minute commute.

Pumped up to the top end of the recommended pressure the studs don't really make contact with the road on the straight (you'll definitely notice them when cornering though), just a gentle hum. When it snows, or there's ice, you can let the tyres down a bit to make them much more effective.

They're not something you'd use all year round though. Just when there's a threat of ice/snow.

My problem is limited storage. I have only have one bike in use at a time, swapping over bikes takes a considerable time faffing in the shed/bike-locker with big locks in the garden in the dark, etc. So I want to limit the number of times I swap.

Next week is a easy decision though, it's going to be hitting -10oC air temp some days. Plenty of chance of ice on corners...

Metcheck's "feels like" includes wind chill. Air temp is suggested to be just -3.

BBC's forecast doesn't quite go to Friday yet, but Thursday night is -3 and the (current) predictions are that the temp will drop significantly over Thursday night. It'll be interesting to see what the BBC predicts once their 5 day forecast goes into Friday.

It shows no sign of stopping here in Toytown.  So we'll need to dig the car out so I can go to work tonight, and then I'll be riding home in the morning. I'm glad I got those winter tyres.

We must be under the same cloud here in Darlo.  It's snowing fiercely - we've had more than an inch in an hour and a half.

Off-road route to work tomorrow :D

Ah right, I didn't catch that.  There seems to be some quite strong winds predicted next week, so I guess that can generate a quite significant additional wind chill effect.

I've got the numbers somewhere for wind chill (Bicycling Science has a graph iirc).

And, yes, we are starting to hit record lows:-

My Schwalbe winter tyres weren't too bad to fit.  Stiff enough that you wouldn't want a Visit in this weather, though.

Shall I just quote my previous posts from every previous winter?

No snow here.

Oh one day you'll get it - I remember getting stuck in snow in Pompey in, oh, 1990  ;)

There was a very light sprinkling in Mos Eisley Pompey at lunchtime today, as though someone had dusted the place with icing sugar.

Couldn't believe the amount of salt laid down outside Waitrose in Southsea - they must have been expecting another SNOpocalypse!  :o

I noticed a bit of half arsed sprinkling of salt around some of the footways in Croydon last weekend, but it looked like it was more optimistic thinking than actually useful.  What looked like a trowels worth of salt chucked about once every 6 feet or more didn't seem to be a practical effort, and it'll probably all be gone by next week when any snow and ice may actually hit!

Bloody hell!  It was cold this morning. (In West Wales)
I made a run for it today, instead of tomorrow, while the pack ice on our hill allowed me to escape.  Thought I'd better get up to Brum before a whole lot more of it comes down and I end up marooned again.
I was worried 'cos I'd not set the heating in Brum to come on if the temp went below 0 degrees.

Bugger me, this house is freezing too.   Think I'll whack the heating on and bugger off to (see sig).
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

And what is the Scotch bus snow threshold exactly? Is 15 inches considered "a dusting" or "barely more than a frost"?

Just asking, because in the SE, buses are stopped City Wide for 1/30th of that depth  ;D
