Title: Dinotte 140L 4xAA / PP3 clip replacement
Post by: Palinurus on 31 August, 2017, 04:20:29 pm
I've had this light for years. The PP3 clip on the light unit has lost it's springiness so it doesn't grip the battery pack any more. This should be easy to fix, just solder on a suitable replacement PP3 clip.

But when I Google 'heavy-duty PP3 clip' I don't see anything as heavy-duty looking as the Dinotte one.

Any ideas?

Currently bodged quite adequately by securing the clip onto the battery pack terminals with a fat elastic band.

You can buy replacement clips of the shelf at Maplin. They are not as robust as the original but I bought several so that on audax rides I have two or three full battery packs ready for a quick swap when required.

I dunno what the Dinotte ones are like but surely this is tough enough for anything?:

Or if you need a slimmer one, also made of hard plastic:

I think we're talking about the connector on the lead, rather than the battery holder.

It's entirely possible that Maplin still sell them, too.  In my (somewhat dated) experience the springy positive terminal fails before the plastic part of the clip, unless subject to mechanical abuse.

Closing up the terminal a bit with pliers to make it fit more tightly is the (temporary) fix.

Thanks, the first one looks like it would be good. Have ordered, will update when done.

I'm way beyond that. Bits of the terminal have started falling off now!

When I were a lad I made PP3 clips for my electronics projects by ripping apart old PP3 batteries and soldering wires onto the back of the clips!

I'd recycled those neurons.  Top tip!

It's been a while since I've seen a PP3.

Better go check the smoke alarms...

Having a look at the Dinotte PP3 clip I think they've taken a regular clip and then overmoulded it (it has a 'D' logo on it, suggesting it was done for this application specifically) and have added an extra outer sheath to protect the wires. Will post a picture later.

Also, once I've replaced it, I'll cut it up and have a look under the moulding.

This approach would be more in keeping with the spirit of this topic.
