Bryan Chapman Memorial 2015
« on: 25 September, 2014, 10:23:58 am »
The deadline for publication as a PBP qualifier is rather fast approaching and there is, as yet, no sign of this much loved ride in the AUK Calendar. Does anyone know if it's going to happen next year?

There's a stub in the events calendar - http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/15-195/ - which got posted to the FB group a week or so ago. So looks like someone's thinking about it, and the PBP comment makes it look like it's going to be a BRM so expect to see something in the next 5 days?

Good news then. The wife has already booked on to the Slateman Ironman which is usually on the same weekend. She fancies coming along and waving at us on Snowdon if the weather is passable.

Hopefully it won't be on the weekend of the 9th or 23rd - fingers crossed.

Traditionally  (well for the last 20 years or so ) it's held 2 weeks  after the Brevet Cymru, so that would put it on 16 /17th May.

If BCM sells out in a day or three, go for Brimstone instead, if looking for a good 600.
Less total climbing but still tougher overall. BCM is great, but Brimstone is outstanding.

I wouldnt worry, AUK selectively ignores its own published deadline.

Excellent, this event sandwiched in between the Essex 4 & 600 rides. May is going too be a busy month. ;D

The BCM is now in the calendar.  Postal entry only, so find those C5 envelopes you bought a stash of years ago before paypal entry

Yes, but only after packing it in his saddlebag and then taking it out and putting it back in several times  ;)

Hmm. Clashing with the Flatlands 600.  Much as I love the BCM, the choice between a long train ride and at least one overnight in a hotel or a short train ride and a 25 minute ride to the start makes the latter a bit of a no-brainer.

I rode the BCM for the first time in 5 years as I couldn't make the Brimstone this year.

The BCM still is an excellent well serviced event with some fine views to be had however I never needed to change from the big chainring throught the ride.  The same cannot be said for the Brimstone - especially with the new route taking Draycot Hill. That is a challenging climb even in my lowest gear and the final section from just before Shaftsbury to the Tarrants makes Llancloudy look positively benign.

On saying that, I see the Pendle 600 is back on next year and (from what I have heard) with 10AAA points trumps all the lumpy 600s in the South. Sadly, it is my son's wedding that weekend so I won't be able to make it. I do hope to make a return to the K&SW some 9 years on from this being my first  successful 600.

Sadly, I might not be able to ride the BCM next year as it is a week later than usual, on a bank holiday weekend at the beginning of half term, so I am likely to be away with the family.

On the plus side, I have entered two 600s that I have not done before; the Kernow and Southwest and the Pendle. If I get round these tough rides ok, I will still need a good Mersey Roads 24 hour TT and PBP to go hyper.

Off topic, but will Pendle 600 count as a "super randonnee" for the ACP Randonneur 10000 award?

Isn't an ACP super randonnee a perm 600 with over 10,000 m climb with a 50h cutoff?
Pendle 600 is listed as 613k with 10150m climb with 40h cutoff. So certainly hard enough.
But this isn't a perm. And probably borderline 10,000 m climb at exactly 600k.

Sophie said not quite. If you run it through the website that ACP use, it falls short.

That makes it, in my opinion, considerably harder than the super Randonee I rode (though that was very hard in a different way).

Pendle is still the daddy of the 600s i have ridden. The first 140km in particular is just savage.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

Cor that weekend is super busy now - 4 600s!  I suspect I may be roped into helping on the Beast From The East as it's part of the WCC SR, so I really don't think the BCM is on the cards for me (it'd have been a solo trip as the tandem qualifying schedule is generally flatter and later).

The BCM is a week later than I’d anticipated which means I should be able to ride it after all.

No bag drop this year.  Hmm, wonder why, could it because bozos like  O:-)  forget to take them home and bother Ritchie for days collecting them from hither and thither  ::-)

I would guess it is far more trouble than it is worth. 100 odd bags etc.

You don't really need it on a 600 anyway. And I guess you are  still free to dump stuff at Kings on the first visit for the yomp over the hills.

I do recall Ritchie saying the bag drop was no more after 2014 due to the logistical issues.

In a PBP year, there’s even more pressure on the sleeping facilities. I’d consider dragging a tent round again.
