Merry Xmas from the Orthopaedic Ward
« on: 22 December, 2017, 09:47:06 pm »
Good news: I got really close to my highest ever annual mileage at 100 miles for each of my 75.5 years.
Bad news: the last bit was done in the back of an ambulance  to Slough inhaling magic has - I could count that, couldn't I?

The offending patch of black ice was in a "safe" back street route.  Should have stuck to the A4 where there was none

Shipped to Oxford Uni Hospital who act as a sort of regional centre of excellence for difficult pelvis ops. Apparently my femur was intact but had made a mess of the pelvic joint. No way I could have even dragged myself off the road let alone ride Grand Tour stages like Geraint.

Now being cared for by superb nurses, doctors etc. etc. from every nation in the EU.

The big op is scheduled for Xmas Eve

Don't think I'll be doing many miles for bit, and I'll be playing a lot of Bach on the piano no pedal

Wish me luck

Bryn

Bugger. Heal well. I broke my hip socket late August 2016 and it took a while before I could cover some miles again.

Mend well and fast!

Quite a few past and present yacfers appear to have had similar.

Merry Christmas!

IME Orthopaedic wards can be quite jolly compared to elsewhere 'inside' on Xmas Day.

That's really bad luck. GWS!

On the matter of playing Bach, a purist wouldn't use the sustaining pedal anyway. It's all done with the fingering! (See B minor fugue from Book 1 for  the most extreme example of this that I can find).

Curse that black ice! You've reminded me to get my bike with ice tyres operational.

Hope the recovery goes well

Get well soon bryn, that sounds very unpleasant.

Curse that black ice! You've reminded me to get my bike with ice tyres operational.

I used my studded tyres when it was icy the other week and they were brilliant. Back to the normal bike when the roads were clear again. Then I was stupid enough to use a cycle path: no grit, no heat from cars; went down hard on black ice and broke a rib.  :-[

An update from Bryn's wife
Much more serious than anyone thought.  Operation finally done yesterday.  Took 6 hours and £1000 of stainless steel.  Never been a titanium man!  He will be setting off all the airport alarms.  Thanks for all the kind messages before the op which cheered him up enormously. Blood pressure down to 82/52 in the night which worried him and the staff nurse, despite forcing down lots of liquid but surgeon said he was quite happy with these figures this morning.  Don't think he will be back in the bike as quickly as you hardy souls.

Thanks for the update. He'll be exhausted by the recovery - send him our best wishes and hope it isn't too long before he can enjoy some fermented grapes.

Heal well. I have 2-3kg of surgical stainless and rarely set off airport metal detectors, so it may not be a problem in the end.

Best wishes from here!

If Bryn wants to discuss playing Bach's keyboard works, I'd love a natter about them. As it happens, I took delivery today of my Christmas present from Dez - a copy of "The Keyboard Music of J. S. Bach" by David Schulenberg.
