Recently I have been listening to Johnny Cash albums, and I came across American IV, which has a few covers on it, the ones that stand out for me are the covers of Hurt (NIN) and Personal Jesus (Depeche Mode).
So it got me thinking, what are your fav and/or unexpected cover versions? My list would be thus:
1) Hurt - Johnny Cash (orig NIN)
2) Umbrella - Biggy Clyro (Jamelia)
3) Crash Course In Brain Surgery - Metallica (Budgie)
4) She's a Model - Terrorvision (KraftWerk)
I'm sure I'll drag up some more but that'll do for now.
-
Oops I did it againI (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAS4ltt7DzI) - Richard Thompson (Brittany Spears)
From the wonderful "1000 years of popular music" album.
-
It's a Family Affair. Iggy Pop. (Sly and the Family Stone)
-
Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sistors (orig. Pink Floyd)
Personal Jesus - Marylin Manson (orig., as you say, Depeche Mode)
-
Personal Jesus - Marylin Manson (orig., as you say, Depeche Mode)
Oooooo If forgot his version....
-
Personal Jesus - Marylin Manson (orig., as you say, Depeche Mode)
Not forgetting the Cash cover of this song also!
-
Mercury Rev used to do a cracking live version of Planet Caravan (Black Sabbath).
I'm sure I'll think of lots more :)
-
1) Schneider TM - "There is a light that never goes out" (orig. Smiths) : On youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4UMpEHa_Ns)
2) Uncle Tupelo - "Effigy" (orig. Creedance Clearwater Revival)
Most despised cover version: "Don't let it bring you down" by Annie Lennox, originally by Neil Young. There are three artists you shouldn't cover: Neil Young, Kate Bush and Morrisey / the Smiths (see pt 1.)
-
"Too Drunk To Fuck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_Drunk_To_Fuck)" by Nouvelle Vague (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nouvelle_Vague_(band)) - rocking punk song covered by cutesy French pop group - and it works (http://www.last.fm/music/Nouvelle+Vague/_/Too+Drunk+to+Fuck) too!
-
Born To Run - FGTH (original Bruce Springsteen)
Tainted Love - Soft Cell (can't remember, embarrassingly)
Travelling Riverside Blues - Led Zeppelin* (Robert Johnson)
I Will Survive - Snuff (Gloria Gaynor)
Snuff also did superior versions of "Hazy Shade of Winter" (Simon & Garfunkel) and many others from the sublime to the ridiculous, including a death-metal German version of "Yes, We have No Bananas" ;D
*it's more a tribute than a cover, although some of the lyrics are the same.
-
Mazza does a good cover - I do like his Tainted Love.
Goatwhore did a nice one of Hazy Shade of Winter...
-
Bare Naked Ladies - Lovers in a dangerous time (Bruce Cockburn)
-
For me a cover version has to be more than an carbon copy of the original (take note Boydrone and Westlife) but to add to it in the arrangement and interpretation.
Some of my favourites cover versions are:
Tori Amos ~ Smells Like Teen Spirit
Low ~ Transmission
Easy Star All Stars ~ Exit Music (For a Film)
Sparklehorse/Thom Yorke ~ Wish You Were Here
Low & Dirty Three ~ Down By the River
R.E.M. ~ First we Take Manhattan
Flaming Lips ~ Can't Get You Out of My Head
-
'Strange' by REM (originally Wire)
'Just Like Heaven' by Dinosaur Jr (originally The Cure)
'Always on My Mind' by Willie Nelson (I know that he was the original artist but most people know the Elvis version, I prefer Nelson's. I could have said I prefer Willie's but that's too much of a cheap gag)
'Valentine's Day is Over' by June Tabor (original by Billy Bragg)
-

'Valentine's Day is Over' by June Tabor (original by Billy Bragg)
If we're on Billy Bragg, I have to grudgingly admit that Kirsty MacColl's version of "A New England" (with the gratuitous key change for the last verse) is better.
-
Nina Gordon, YouTube - Straight Out Of Compton (http://youtube.com/watch?v=72uJVMP5I38&feature=related)
Straight out of Compton
-
...and every single track on Cat Power's The Covers Record (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Covers_Record)
-
Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sistors (orig. Pink Floyd)
Noooooooo!!!!! - this makes me want to do a Chopper Read and cut my ears off >:( >:(     Scissor Sisters should be publicly stoned to death for it
Personal Jesus - Marylin Manson (orig., as you say, Depeche Mode)
This one however is
And William Shatners' version of Common People is much better than Pulps original IMO
<edit>
Regina Spektors' cover of Real Love by John Lennon is a favourite
-
...actually, the best cover I ever head is Nina Simone doing Leonard Cohen's Suzanne - there are many recorded versions of this but I have a really low quality mp3 which I can't find on any CD and it's the best - beautiful, simple piano motif, amazing singing and as it's a Cohen song, knock-out lyrics too.
-
I used the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt on a film of the Bryan Chapman 600 in 2007 from 2.23 on this YouTube - Bryan Chapman Treatment 1 (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AuZiRgPYKl4)
Summer Breeze by the Isley Brothers is my favourite cover, few remember the original by Seals and Crofts. YouTube - Seals & Crofts - Summer Breeze (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tQtRathgoCk)
Damon.
-
Favourite: Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
Unexpected: Madge - American Pie

"Too Drunk To Fuck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_Drunk_To_Fuck)" by Nouvelle Vague (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nouvelle_Vague_(band)) - rocking punk song covered by cutesy French pop group - and it works (http://www.last.fm/music/Nouvelle+Vague/_/Too+Drunk+to+Fuck) too!
Awesome! The DK's version of this is one of my favourites. Will the iTunes store have this, I wonder...
-
Lithium - the Polyphonic Spree (originally Nirvana). I think this one is just great, as the song is actually happy!
Or Placebo have done a whole albums of covers, which I think are rather good. I do like their covers of Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush), Bigmouth Strikes Again (The Smiths) and 20th Century Boy (T Rex).
Or, more obscure one's I like:
Paint it Black by Earth Crisis (originally Rolling Stones, also covered by many others)
Born in the USA - ballboy (Springsteen)
It Takes More - Mull Historical Society (Ms Dynamite)
I do agree that William Shatner's Common people is great, though I'm not convinced as to whether it's better than the original.
-
Born in the USA - ballboy (Springsteen)
I've got that! It's great, can't think why there is an omitted verse though.
-
Independent Woman - Elbow (Destiny's Child) ;D
Especially when accompanied by the Northern Kittens. (http://www.rathergood.com/independent_woman/) 8)
-
Nick Cave - Disco 2000 (Pulp cover) (http://www.last.fm/music/Nick+Cave/_/Disco+2000+(pulp+Cover))
-
La Grange -- G3 (originally ZZ Top)
-
"Too Drunk To Fuck (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Too_Drunk_To_Fuck)" by Nouvelle Vague (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nouvelle_Vague_(band)) - rocking punk song covered by cutesy French pop group - and it works (http://www.last.fm/music/Nouvelle+Vague/_/Too+Drunk+to+Fuck) too!

iTunes Store does in fact have this. As an aside, the music channel "the Hits" tells me they will be showing "20 amazingly bad cover versions" tonight at 8. Coincidence? I think not!
-
Blancmange - doing their version of Abba's 'The day before you came'
-
Go West - PSB (Village Peeps)
-
Erasures outrageous Abbaesque covers
-
Julian Clary's Leader of the Pack. And the Bowie/Jagger Dancing In The Street.
-
For more random cheesy Smiths covers: How Soon Is Now? by t.A.T.u. (http://www.last.fm/music/t.A.T.u./_/How+Soon+Is+Now%3F)
I think its actually quite good (though not as good as the original).
-
Common People - William Shatner

;D ;D ;D

-
First one I thought of was the Nick Cave/Bad Seeds cover of (Leonard Cohen's) Avalanche on From Her to Eternity.
It's incredible.
-
Joe Cocker's version of ' A Little Help From my Friends' is so much better than the original, but then anything would be an improvement.

I do! It's terrible! I have a German colleague who's very much into minimal techno and similar things, and he'd been listening to my music and approving of it all, and then he discovered that I also like Scooter. He's been shaking his head at me ever since.
-
First one I thought of was the Nick Cave/Bad Seeds cover of (Leonard Cohen's) Avalanche on From Her to Eternity.
It's incredible.
On that note, I have Nick Cave singing Dress Rehearsal Rag (also L Cohen), from a live concert a few years ago, I think. It's also excellent.
-
Found it - Rock el casbah - Rachid Taha (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xJkGQps1lrs&eurl=http://www.last.fm/music/Rock+El+Casbah/+videos/+1-xJkGQps1lrs?b=1)
Not really unexpected, but pretty damn fabulous.

-
Walk On By (covered by the Stranglers - originally Dionne Warwick)
Yep!
-
Ooh, ooh - my favourite subject!
Somebody beat me to Tatu's unironic version of How Soon Is Now? :P
The Cardigans, in the early twee phase of their career did Iron Man, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and a sun-drenched and jazzy "The Boys Are Back In Town"
Galaxie 500 did a storming version of the Pistols' "Submission" (good covers band - see "Here She Comes Now", "Listen The Snow Is Falling" and "Isn't It A Pity?")
Similarly, Low are good at this kind of thing - as well as Transmission, they did "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" and an entire set of Misfits songs as an encore (hidden tracks on the box set).
Calexico's mariachi-tinged version of the Minituemen's "Corona"
The Manic Street Preachers's "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head"
Gillian Welch and David Rawlings doing Radiohead's Black Star - especially live
Big Black doing Kraftwerk's The Model
Ryan Adams's version of Always On My Mind - or even Wonderwall!
I even like The Cowboy Junkies' version of Sweet Jane, even though they miss out a crucial chord.
-
I rather liked Tricky's cover of Love Cats (the Cure) from Vulnerable as something a little unexpected.
Most of my favourites have been covered upthread, but a Nick Cave one wot's been missed (IMO) is Plain Gold Ring (Nina Simone, or traditional, I think) off Live Seeds.
-
The Delgado's cover of Mr Blue Sky is great (here (http://fitsandstarts.typepad.com/fits_and_starts/files/01_mr_blue_sky.mp3)).
-

Calexico's mariachi-tinged version of the Minituemen's "Corona"
Do tell more - I've got the box set but must've missed the hidden tracks...
And Calexico covered Corona? Wow! Please tell me where!
-
Just about all of Seu Jorge's Brazilian covers of David Bowie songs...

or

Some of my favourite covers that haven't already been mentioned are:
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen)
That's Entertainment - Morrissey (The Jam)
Sealion - Feist (Nina Simone, although it's not really a cover as it has different lyrics and a new title)
Toxic - Mark Ronson (Britney Spears)
-
Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood - Nina Simone
Ne Me Quitte Pas - Nina Simone
I Shall Be Released - Nina Simone
Don't Smoke In Bed - Nina Simone
...can you see where this is going?..

Especially the full length version .
The Witch's Promise - All About Eve (Jethro Tull)
-
The Dub Side of the Moon - by Easy Star All Stars, works surprisingly well.
-
I know it's already been said quite a bit, but +loads to Johnny Cash and the American series. Hurt is a real goose pimpler (and I was a big fan of the original). I also like Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower better than the original.
Some of Mark Ronson's covers (interpretations? adaptations?) are interesting.
-
Some of Mark Ronson's covers (interpretations? adaptations?) are interesting.
Mmm, I like his version of Radiohead's Just.
-
Another  for Mark Ronson's Toxic.
Another one that hasn't been mentioned is Apocalyptica's cover of Toxicity by system of a down, bloody good stuff.
-
Money - Flying Lizards

I'm sure that the whole world has seen this YouTube - William Shatner - "Rocket Man" (1st Generation Copy) (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=DvQwXOCKNLY)

Seconded.
-
YouTube - muse - can t take my eyes off you (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6EA67xHj4w&feature=related)
I've missed that before - fantastic :D :D :D :D :D
-
Joe Cocker's version of ' A Little Help From my Friends' is so much better than the original, but then anything would be an improvement.
And when he did it with Marti Pellow at a Prince's Trust concert way back in the 80s, Pellow squawked about like a strangulated budgie and completely embarrassed himself. He was utterly outclassed.
-
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen)
Seconded.
Nah - KD Lang's version is much better. And her version of After The Goldrush is a thousand times better than Neil Young's warbled original.
Favourite cover of all time though - "Light My Fire" - the Doors song, as covered by Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger and the Trinity. Worth digging out for a listen if you like '60s jazz organ.
-
YouTube - muse - can t take my eyes off you (live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6EA67xHj4w&feature=related)

Hard Day's Night - Peter Sellers (orig. some popular beat combo from Liverpool)

NB: As he mentions, this song 'Is Offensive'
-
Gary Jules - Mad World (Tears for Fears)
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
And Siouxse and the Banshees - Dear Prudence (Beatles)
-
I also like Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower better than the original.
Everybody1 prefers Hendrix' version of AATW, even Bob Dylan.
- Walk On By ~ The Stranglers (Dionne Warwick)
- Gloria ~ Jimi Hendrix (Them)
- Life Is Life ~ Laibach (Opus)
- Dignity ~ Robyn Hitchcock (Bob Dylan)
- Up The Junction ~ Lawnmower Deth (Squeeze)
[Are you sure about that last one? - Ed.]
1 - Noel Redding was the exception, but he's dead so it doesn't count.
-
I like the cover versions which displace the original but which are not classics that are part of the general repertoire.
YouTube - Grace Jones - Private Life (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=thtQngqG4vg) originally a Pretenders track, given a reggae workover by Sly and Robbie.
YouTube - Laibach - Geburt Einer Nation (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=AXkjzNuYITY) is an interesting rework of One Vision by Queen, look what they've done to my creed indeed.
Damon.
-
I heard someone singing a version of Janis Joplins Piece of my Heart yesterday dont know who it was but twas very good.I also like Davids Grays version of say hello wave goodbye.
-
Walk On By (covered by the Stranglers - originally Dionne Warwick)
Especially the full length version .
The Witch's Promise - All About Eve (Jethro Tull)
Absolutely. And while I'm here, what about Rollercoaster by the Spacemen 3, originally by the 13th Floor Elevators, transformed into 18 minutes of live noise.
-
Tori Amos did a brilliant cover of "That's what I like" by Chas 'n Dave. Then some random US school kids covered it! Worked really well apart from hearing kids in middle America singing about jellied eels!
-
Absolutely. And while I'm here, what about Rollercoaster by the Spacemen 3, originally by the 13th Floor Elevators, transformed into 18 minutes of live noise.
Blast, forgot that one. They give good cover: Little Doll (The Stooges) is good and It's Allright (sic) (Bo Diddley) is Even Betterer.
-
Marc Almond - Something's Gotten (sic) Hold Of My Heart
Though, since it's a duet with Gene Pitney, it's kinda a re-working...
-
And there was I Predict A Riot by the Cheshire Women's Institute
-
Calexico's mariachi-tinged version of the Minituemen's "Corona"
That's a good one--I also like the way they sneak The Specials' "Ghost Town" into the middle of "Crystal Frontier" in the live recordings.
-
And Calexico covered Corona? Wow! Please tell me where!

Heart Like A Wheel - June Tabor (orig:Linda Ronstadt)
June has the best voice in English folk music. She has also done a cover of Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart but I haven't heard that; bet that's pretty weird. Wish I could find a copy.
-
Love Will Tear Us Apart seems a popular one to cover, I've got versions by Squarepusher and Nouvelle Vague on my ipod. The Squarepusher one is particularly good.
Also I remembered two more covers I love, Pressure Drop by The Specials and Police and Thieves by The Clash :)
-
Just remembered Cowboy Junkies' version of I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry, Ryan Adams' Wonderwall and Mrs Robinson by The Lemonheads
-
Excuse Me Mister - John Martyn (orig. Ben Harper)
Also on the same album (The Church With One Bell) - Glory Box (Portishead)
And, for that matter, any of the others.
-
Did someone mention Bowie and Jagger's cover of 'Dancing in the Streets'? That is an utter abomination... And most of Jon Ronson's covers are entirely ill-judged - he is just a prancing New York rich kid IMHO... :-\ And sorry, whoever thought that you could better Neil Young's 'After the Gold Rush' hasn't even got a soul! :'(
Totally agree on Devo's 'Satisfaction' though.
How about The Breeders, 'Happiness is a Warm Gun' (Beatles)? Or The Pixies, 'Head On' (JAMC)?
-
Unless I've missed it no-one's mentioned This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley) - way better than the original.
I like the previously mentioned Blancmange/Human League/Schneider TM covers.
Also:
Danielle Dax - Tomorrow Never Knows (Beatles)
Cabaret Voltaire - Here She Comes Now (Lou Reed) & No Escape (Saxon)
Kode9 & The Spaceape - Sine, originally Sign of the Times - (Prince)
Age of Chance - Kiss (Prince)
Thanatos - That's The Way (I Like It) (KC & the Sunshine Band) (30s sample here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/recsradio/radio/B000000BCO)) - possibly the most miserable cover version ever!
-
And Calexico covered Corona? Wow! Please tell me where!
HERE (http://casadecalexico.com/store/dvd/)
Cheers Scott - Rhys W has already pointed me in the direction of the Convict Pool EP. Now on its way :D
-
It's also on the Live at Plaza de César Chávez set
Which also contains versions of Jesus & Tequila and Alone Again Or, plus Ticket to Ride is segued into Not Even Stevie Nicks
-
Unless I've missed it no-one's mentioned This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley) - way better than the original.
Great choice!! I love this band. Good to hear someone else likes them too.
-
Unless I've missed it no-one's mentioned This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley) - way better than the original.
It is lovely. However I prefer Brian Kennedy's version for... personal reasons.

-
Leaning On a Lamppost - Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain (orig. George Formby)
Ah. That reminds me. There cover of Anarchy in the UK is brilliant.
-
Gravelands by The King, whilst not in the top musical echelons, is worth a listen for its comedy value. It's an album of cover versions of dead artists' songs sung in the style of Elvis Presley.
-
Tortoise Corpse - Delilah (Tom Jones)
In a smelly, noisy pub in Swansea sometime in the early 90's
-
Tortoise Corpse - Delilah (Tom Jones)
The Sensational Alex Harvey Band did a superb Delilah.
