ECE Question

If I was to ECE a 300 by adding a 100km ride on the end, if I am out of time for the full 400, or have mechanical. But I complete the 300 calendar part, does the 300 still count? Is doing an ECE gambling the whole thing?

No - the calendar part stands on its own. As long as you complete it between its start and finish times, you're fine: failing on the calendar part means the ECE fails¹ but not vice versa.

It's perhaps more likely where the ECE is a greater proportion of the whole - maybe a 100+100 - but it's fairly easy to construct a scenario where a mechanical means you're out of time for the 300 but still get round the full 400km in 27 hours.

No. If you complete the 300, you complete the 300. 300 done. It counts. The ECE is an add-on and can only gain! But if your 100 ECE came before the 300 cal, and you completed the ECE but then didn't finish the 300 for whatever reason, you wouldn't get the ECE points either.

Think I'll give the ECE thing a go then. There's a 300 in October that runs from 0900-0500. If I am full value, I'd have a good 2.5 hours or so to wait for a train home, and if I do it in the same time I did my last 300, I'd have about 5.5 hours to wait. So rather than waiting in the cold at a station, I figure I may as well cycle 100km in the direction of home (There's a station 101.7km away!), this gives me a 400km ECE. If I'm not gambling the 300, there's very little to be lost in trying to ECE.

I take it no issues with the calendar being BRM? Am I right in thinking ECE's are done at BR pace? Meaning I'd have... *rolls dice* 27 hours 12 minutes total?

Yes ECE's are done at BR pace of 14.3kph total so you would have 27.97h (whatever that is in minutes) for the 400, it doesn't matter if the calendar is BR or BRM but if it's BRM and overdistance the overdistance can count towards the 400 (only if you validate by gps) but not the maximum time for the 300 (ie you still have to complete the 300 in 20 h for a BRM but can bank any extra in the total ECE)

and you have to ride the full distance for the 300 (not mandatory route as such but the full routesheet distance) to be able to do less than 100 for the ECE bit (which will be mandatory route)

To add to the confusion what you end up with is a BRM 300 but a BR 400 - in other words if it were a PBP qualifier next year, it would be a 300 counting toward PBP qualification, but a 400 counting towards your SR.
