I chucked yet another failed <£20 bike computer into the box that's aleady filled with crap <£20 bike computers and their bits and fitted a Cateye Strada wireless to the trike.

It works: it's reliable, accurate and the other two on the other good bikes also work perfectly. I'm fed up with bike "bargain" accessories.

1  Taped the bars on the new track machine - partly to form a pad to stop them bashing the paint on the top tube when the bars swing round.  Excellent job

2  Adjusted angle of the bars on the new track machine - and the bare metal above the tape now hits the top tube and will bash the paint.  Bugger  :-[

... and tomorrow, I will be removing the bar tape from the new track bike and replacing it, taking it slightly further up to avoid bashing the paint on the top tube.

The only slight upside is that I managed to squeeze both sides out of one (of the two in the packet) rolls of "carbon effect" Velox tape.

We had to leave the bikes outside for a couple of days, and my chain was so badly rusted by yesterday that I had to give urgent attention :-[
Getting there...

Polished an AM hub shell, not quite sure what to do with it next.  Maybe it could have the S-RF3 innards in it for someone who wants the vintage look, but wants a hub that can't slip.  Or maybe I'll build another Brompton rear wheel, although I'm not sure 40-hole rims exist.

Tried single speed on the Tricross yesterday - today I swopped it back to fixed.
And (as a tiny window of dryish weather) I managed to get the Virago started and took it out to charge the battery and circulate the oil....

Cleaned my bike after the rather filthy state the roads have been in this week.

Bodged some clear lenses for my glasses out of an old pair of safety glasses.

OK, I think it's just about ready to be crashed again.

I've just been fettling the tandem.

  • everything washed
  • chains cleaned, lubed & tightened (link removed from rear chain)
  • new brake blocks & brakes adjusted
  • Rohloff checked for new cracks
  • saddle proofided
  • touch-up paint applied
  • dirty paraffin spilt all over my right foot
  • greasy smudges applied to bits of face, much to Mrs. Wow's amusement

My commuter fixie lives again!

Back from a case of near-terminal chainsettyfalleyoffedness and thanks to a very excellent forummer sending me a lightly used spare part, Phil's back on the road and badder than ever with my new rear light.

brakes mounted,   mudguards mounted and chain shortened to the correct length as the last thing
before completion.

Then I discovered I don't have a link or a spare pin for a 8-speed chain  :'(

I've fettled Kali - but I can't change the sodding pedals...  >:(

I don't know what he put them on with, but I've broken two spanners trying to shift them (and yes, I was trying to turn them the right way).

New AM/AW hybrid hub wheel fitted and test ridden.   Unfortunately it slips in bottom gear on a really steep hill - it may just be cone adjustment.  The clutch is new, the gear rings dogs looked OK and the pawls are new, so hopefully it's just an over-tight RH cone.  The ratios of the AM (52", 60" and 70") are so useful that it needs to work.  Worst case scenario is that I need to find a better gear ring.

Do you have a proper long pedal spanner?  Try a little bit of heat (boiling water).  Also try removing the crank first, then the floor can act as a fulcrum.

I fitted a new headset to my Marin, using the Proper Tool For The Job.

Then I decided to swap pedals over on a couple of bikes. I should have quit while I was ahead. Who forgot to put the chain on the big ring? Who gouged a chunk out of his hand when the spanner slipped?   :-[ :'(
I'd have settled for broken spanners.
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Fixed my Smart halogen front lights  The fuse holder had disintegrated so the battery wouldn't charge. A bit of electrical tape sorted that, so I can go back to lighting up the street signs on my way home from work  O:-)

I haven't fettled anything, but it has taken me half an hour just to get last week's commuting mud cleaned off. Yuk.

The turbo (i-Magic) and the turbo hack (currently a Jensen Outback frame but due for a swap to an old Marin frame).

The dedicated pc came up with a cmos error on startup but all seems fine now.

New brake levers and brake blocks.  Seems to have done the trick, bike now stops without me having to resort to shoe rubber interafacing with the road.

Cleaned of a weeks worth of assorted grunge including very sticky cow shit
