Title: How to: View GPS files on your computer
Post by: djrikki on 17 January, 2019, 09:51:58 pm
Thought I'd try my hand at a video tutorial.  I enjoy putting routes together for myself, but when I first got a Wahoo I did scratch my head wondering is there a way to look at a route on a computer and not just through a limited App on a phone.

I wanted to also cover the topic of cycle tracks from the perspective of a Road Bike.  The NCN is full of off-road trails and paths, but which are actually any good for a Road Bike? It would be a shame to miss out on these; there must be tools out there that can help?

Depends what you mean by viewing the GPS file.

If you want to look at the actual raw data, then you can just open it in Notepad or other text editor.  Handy if you want to edit your Strava data......

Or to view the route graphically, just import it into a website like bikehike or RidewithGPS.

Regarding Sustrans routes, their map shows which bits are either on or off road.  Some sections of off road will be smooth tarmac, but most won't be.

Yeah, I might do a video at some point about renaming routes and merging routes and stuff like that in a GUI or like you say in a text editor.

Just use one of the free Garmin programmes, the old Mapsource or the new Basecamp

^^^^^ this about as easy as it gets.  Not sure why you want to make a video for yourself. Bit of overkill for something so simple.

I've started using QGIS. Much nicer than Basecamp or Mapsource.

A bit OTT though, like using GIMP for cropping and resizing a photo to post on a forum.

You’ll never become a social media influencer with that kind of attitude. ;)
