« on: 07 January, 2015, 10:40:45 pm »
only a week in & were all amazed with the start Steve has made... So, has he inspired you to take on a new personal challenge yet?

You should not be amazed at what he has done -- that is what he HAS to do -- day after day after day for a year.

I rode about 70 miles on Jan 1st - hardly epic,  and mainly a mental challenge to get out the door by 0730 - but still,  a betterstart to the year than I usually manage!

I am just starting a tracklog viewing marathon. Steve is just north west of Daventry as I type.

Last Saturday, heading out into the rain before dawn, it occurred to me that Teethgrinder had been going for several hours already. And would still be going at it alone, long after I got back from a nice morning's ride with friends, elevenses, pub stop etc.

Humbling.

I wouldn't say he has inspired me per se as this doesn't interest me whatsoever, despite it being a mindblowing awesome thing to do.

However, studying his Strava logs has encouraged me to look at my own cycling especially with regards to my heart rate effort. I need to see if I can train myself to ride slower and at a lower effort for longer. I have this unbreakable desire to ride fast all the time which is why I blow up so often.

Steve has inspired me to have a go at time trialling - did my first 10 on the 1st of jan with a good 87km warm-up riding to the start from london.

^^That.

I've also been talked into taking a break from my planned diet of short distance events this year, to do the National 12 hour.  This year it's on the West Cheshire course, which uses most of the same roads as the MR24 and is organised by the same folk.  Is Steve likely to be riding?

I'm going to ride a DIY 200k this weekend. It wasn't just Steve - I was invited to ride via a Strava discussion - but I might have been less likely to ride a January 200k without Steve being out there.

Yeah, that. Not doing so well on the whole riding a bike thing, though. ::-)

In recent years I have found the motivation to get out and run / cycle / exercise has wilted somewhat.   Steve's commitment, being out there before six on wet, cold, dark winter mornings has helped with my self-motivation.   Every morning I fire up the tablet at 06:30 with a mug of tea only to see that Steve has already hit the road hard.   Awesome.

Good luck Steve and thanks for the inspiration.

Look in the audax board.

Also, I've ridden every day so far - some days only 3 miles, but I'm trying to keep going. Snow or ice will stop me as I do most of it with a 20 month old in a bike seat.

KFC twice a day.  ;D

Seriously though, ride every day in January, if only 25 miles.

Inspired or shamed, I'm not quite sure. I am largely a fair-weather cyclist and can be persuaded to stay indoors by a bit of light rain. Steve doesn't have that luxury. In order to successfully complete this challenge he has to ride (almost) every day, rain or shine, cold or warm. We get precious little free time, finding excuses not to ride just seems a waste what we have. I will ride more!

Days like yesterday when I am tempted to get the bus to work, I just remember that Steve has already been on the road for a couple of hours so why can't I manage 1/2 an hour to work?

All he's done so far (together with my browsing of the Tommy Godwin website) is made me feel humble and unworthy. More miles per month than I manage in a year  :-[
