It turned out to be 199 miles.

Jo tells us that this took him past 100,000 km for the year. What an achievement, particularly considering the intervention of a pissed mopedist earlier in the year.

It's been an astonishing effort. Totally mind-boggling.

I think we should all stand from our seats and applaud the man who:-

-got up after a broken ankle and kept on riding
-is one of only six in history who have achieved this distance
-has the will to go on riding for a further 8 months in search of his goal
-sets aside illness, team member defections, bad weather and all sorts of other distractions/comments. He just gets on with the job in hand

I'm really proud  of Steve and what he has achieved/will go on to achieve.

that seems a bit strong...'the desertion of one's country or cause in favour of an opposing one.'

AIUI the team members are all volunteers, they have lives that change as well. All who have helped, or continue to help Steve in his endeavor, however large or small the contribution, should be applauded.

I think the sense is clear. Perhaps change it to something like:
I think we should all stand from our seats and applaud the man who:-

...

- sets aside illness, team changes, bad weather and all sorts of other distractions/comments. He just gets on with the job in hand
