Have a fantastic ride salvatore (and all the other AUKs riding!).

Jealous of you all.

Seconded. This was my greatest ever audax experience in 2010, and maybe I will get to ride it again sometime?
I know you've already ridden it once, Salvatore, so you know what to expect. As I remember, the key to the ride is to ride hard through the first night and next day (on the downhills and flats), and up the first tough climbs to enjoy the first sleep at Chiusi Monastery. The more relaxed time limits then kick-in later, and you can look forward to pasta, pizza, ice-cream and coffee stops galore, hopefully! Theres a nice B&B just past the Lake Bolsena control,(on the lake) should you need 3 or 4 hours proper rest to re-charge the batteries.

Looking at the entry list and I thought that one of the Italian riders was called Stay Happy.  Then I realized I was still on Google Translate.  Good luck to Felice Resta, Mauritius Oil (Maurizio Dell'olio), Paris Mile (Paride Miglio), Aris Paintings (Aris Quadri), Sonia Lyrics (Sonia Testi) and all the other riders.

#1001Miglia Massa Finalese 270ish. 26 deg just before sunrise - now getting hot.

As opposed to Coupar Angus Scotland where it is 16 deg and p***ing down  :(

just checked the results and some riders (both male and female) are really shifting - 540km in 17-18hrs. this pace would equate to 450mi on 24hr tt, and there's still over 1k km to go. strong tailwind?

#1001Miglia @alanparkinson2 was suffering in the heat yesterday and almost packed, but had a cup of tea and carried on.

After hot day I suffered on the nigh stage. But after < 1 hr kip started at 2:30 am and rode 75 km stage with > 2000 m climbing #1001Miglia

Hope Pete is alright and glad parky got going again, just goes to show the power of tea.

I want to do this ride one day, but the heat scares me off it a little.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

No need. There is tea, ice cream and pain-au-chocolat.
The only problem is that shops have siesta's.
Forgive me Father, for I have sinned. It has been too many days since I have ridden through the night with a brevet card in my pocket...

I see one Austrian rider is having an very fast ride....
1110 km in 1 day 22 hours  :o

http://www.1001migliaitalia.it/riders/see_rider.php?rider=127&lang=en

Superb, considering the mountains/heat...
Maybe he is travelling by taxi between controls?

Veloboy of this parish and two other Brits have arrived at Lake Bolsena (871K), well done. Includes young Daniel Moores, riding much faster than 2 years ago.

Scraped in at Bolsena, 811 km. A short stage at only 54 km , but 990 m climbing.#1001Miglia"

"Going to snatch some kip on the next stage to Pomone, try to cure the déjà vu "

Looks as though PeteT was out of time
I can see only 5 Brits still in at 871km and overall it looks like 72 out of 288 starters have not made it to 871km.

36C and 27% humidity at Lake Bolsena...Sounds unbearable in the heat of the afternoon. I guess lots of riders are taking siestas and doing more night riding. Some of the descents are very fast as I remember, so at night they need to take care!

From the website:

Due to high temperatures riders will be given an extra 12 hours to finish ride. Due to technical problems at the control Castelnuovo the riders times will be visible online at 1630 today.

12 hours!!

I'm sure I've seen a Tea Cup decorated to this effect.

Good luck John.

I've complained about freezing conditions on a couple of BCM600s but at least that encourages you to ride harder and warm up.  I've never really had to deal with very hot conditions, I imagine the challenge is balancing water/salts (even getting access to enough water in 36C conditions). I could easily drink a bidon of water on one hot climb.

Actually, I tried to cycle 300km to Manchester a few years ago, on the hottest UK day in history.  That was mid-30s and I packed around 250km as my knee completely locked up.  Looking back it was probably related to dehydration because it never happened before or since.  1600km of the same?  No thanks.
