I have just seen that Roxwell village are trying to raise the funds to buy and reopen The Chequers as a “community pub”.  Reading the prospectus, they plan to install secure cycle parking and aim at attracting the cycling trade.  Hopefully the scheme gets off the ground and then maybe a venue for a relatively far future MEMWNS meet?

The Leather Bottle in Pleshey was open and looked busy when I cycled past on Saturday evening.

A posh restaurant that serves beer at a table by the entrance, shuts when the eaters have finished. I gave up going there on the commute.

hmm, ok. It has been refurbished under new management and had a small selection of ales when visited one evening for food. But their website does state they close at 9pm midweek. Another destination location required.

Never been to Cross Keys so that would be good -  or Railway Tavern as it's always fun dashing back on puncture path along A12 ...

Railway Tavern sounds good.

Not too Eastern for those not in the French splinter group.

Railway Tavern has a lesser choice of ales?

Needs to be a Jane friendly location, Cross Keys, Hatty P seems to fit the bill for that?

Yes, the Swan is almost double the distance from Witham - 6.8 miles vs 3.5 miles.

Either is fine by me.

I was just about to ask.

I might ride out locally but, if I can summon the energy, I will aim to be at Cross Keys.  I should have just cycled into work this morning.

Anyone planning on launching from the usual pad at 7:30?
My ETA in HP will be 8:30, hopefully there will be some late evening sun in the beer garden to be enjoyed.

Checked out the Leather Bottle Pleshy today, Ridley's Rite £4.20 and Ghost ship.
Landlady pulled my pint but paid no attention to how cloudy it was, end of barrel but I think they've got some learning to do on cellar craft.
I opted for a replacement of Ghostship.
Early days perhaps.

Is it open mid-week?  There was some talk at one stage of it only opening at weekends, via some kind of community pub licence but I presume from your mention of a landlady that it has found a more permanent tenant?

That might be some assumptions on my behalf. There was talk from one local about how long the darts goes on, on a Wednesday as he was educating her in the way of the locals... So who knows lol. On beer selection alone it's not quite made the grade I think. There was 3 real ales on when the prev chap was there... One to keep an eye on, might come good but feels more larger venue so far.

Joergen

I haven't joined you good people recently. Would be interested in a ride home to Southend after closing time, from a suitable hostelry. Please keep posting on here!

I suppose that prompts the question, where to this week?

The Cats was discussed the other Wednesday a splendid winter venue and perhaps a sumer venue in the Garden (not that there is a lot left of daylight in the evening now  :'( :'( ) , as was The 'dev

Wow friendly would be something S of Danbury ish which I think limits it to either
  • The Cats (35km ish)
  • Maldon somewhere (35km ish) or
  • Hurdlemakers (30k)
  • or The Swan Lt Totham (for the sake of Dirk :) ) (40km  ish)
  • or T'Dev (33km ish)

I've no idea where in SoS or a prefered route, the distances above are just rough estimate. Last bullet has the greatest amount of beer choice.

Joergen

T’Dev is probably favourite for train assist to Chelmo and then electric assist ride home for Wow. It’s central for anyone not in France too.
