From a distance.  Wow.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

I think that lightning isn't that uncommon around volcanoes, since the very fine dust particles rising and falling can behave a bit like a Van de Graff generator.

It's still an incredible looking shot though!
Actually, it is rocket science.

It reminds me of a John Martin painting (I think it's in the Laing)

Thank you!  I knew it reminded me of something...

I think it's called the Destruction of Gomorrah.  Possibly Sodom.

Don't look!  You know what happened to Lot's wife...
It was a day like any other in Ireland, only it wasn't raining

Do you mean this picture?  If so, then it's "The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah" ie you got it more or less correct!

Call me a philistine, but the photo has way more of an emotional impact on me than the painting does.

In situ, the painting is very impressive - not least because it's enormous.  It's also the first thing that you see when you walk into the darkened room at the Laing Gallery (in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and free to visit, if you're ever there).

Don't worry about philistinism, though - I think most of the art establishment looks down on him, so you're firmly on the side of the experts snobs  ;D

I'm with you.  The photo is jaw-dropping.  The painting, meh, epic in a Blakey kind of way.

The photo is astonishing, without a doubt, but I recommend anybody to visit the Laing & see the 'Destruction' in situ before they dismiss it.

I thought Martin a dauber until I experienced the power of it.  I'm by no means a fan even now, but what a piece!

I'm reminded of the Z Machine. This bugger can release 80 times the world's electrical power output for a few billionths of a second, and whip up plasmas with a temperature of over 3.6 billion degrees fahrenheit - the highest man-made temperature ever achieved. That is lightning, but it's a time lapse photograph, so slightly misleading...

[edit] Although I do think the volcano shot is far more awe inspiring - the Z Machine won't kill you, but nature will.
