Fitting new window pane - tips
« on: 25 November, 2017, 02:49:06 pm »
I have to fit some new panes of glass, something that I’ve managed to avoid my whole life!

Any tips?

From the magic of Google it seems I need to put a thin bead of putty in the frame, insert the glass and then apply putty all round to hold the glass in.

Is that it?

My concern is that the glass could fall out whilst the putty is drying. Or does that just not happen?

Thanks

You should be ok doing it that way - it's a while (decades) since I've done one, but putty can take a lifetime to go off.

Eight or so small pins to hold the pane in place is normal. You can get flat pins that won't project beyond the putty.

If you are using a linseed based putty work the putty well before using it in the frame, including rolling it in paper to remove excess oil.

Glazing brad pins.

Getting the (external) putty in a sensible angle and line is a dark art.
It is simpler than it looks.

You could use glazing push points.   They sit flush to the glass and you use a putty knife or similar to push them into the wood.

In real terms you only need one each side or one top and one bottom unless it's a very large pane.

All I know about putty is that it's what makes windows useful...

More general tip: Don't do anything that would score points on the Grand Designs drinking game.

Put on a bead of putty with your thumb all around the rebate, push in the glass and secure with four push points, one on each edge. Push them in with the putty knife and don't even think of using anything which looks or acts like a hammer to drive them home.

Warm up the putty in your hands and putty away, cut off the putty on the inside with the putty knife.

Let the putty sit unpainted for a month and then prime and paint it.

I use these points:

Thanks for all the tips, especially the push points.

I only saw the advice not to use a hammer after I’d finished the job but no damage done :)

So 2 windows fitted. Putty a bit messy but was improving as I went along

If you do use a hammer, don't say we didn't warn you, but slide it along the glass rather than swinging it in fresh air. That way it has no velocity towards the glass.

Window panes broken as a result of this advice are not my fault!

Water on the putty knife makes smoothing easier.
