I used to love The Great Egg Race when I was a kid.

To be honest, I assumed he'd died years ago....

He was a visiting lecturer when I was at college.
The man was a genius.

He was brilliant.  Enjoyed the Great Egg Race no end, but my best memory of him is him bouncing around a lecture theatre with deeley*-boppers on his head.  Can't for the life of me remember what point he was making, it was 1980/81 or thereabouts, but the image endures.

Very sad, I hadn't realised he was still so active as a scientist.  I feel he need to find some of his stuff online to show the youth of the house.

Indeed. I didn't watch The Great Egg Race but loved Young Scientist.

Being a descendant of German Jewish emigrés, the accent was almost ubiquitous when I grew up amongst relatives, (not parents: they speak with scant trace of FOREIGN birth) teachers, school friends' parents, & all of the older generation at the synagogue, an import from Frankfurt am Main.

He was a bit before my time (or, more accurately, before my time with a telly).  I grew up with Johnny Ball revealing all instead.

I did like the one episode of The Great Egg Race that the BBC deigned to put up on iPlayer a couple of years ago.

It wasn't his genius that singled him out, after all they are ten a penny in that Cambridge place, but his ability to communicate. Most of the really clever people I know are siht at it, and working on a campus of sorts I'm surrounded by really really clever people who can't speak!

First John Noaks, and now Heinz Wolff, my childhood heroes are dying :'(
