I’m beginning to find my solace in my ineptitude difficult to maintain. I’ve just found out that a chap I was an apprentice with back in the day, a chap that went off to university and thus to greater things, a chap whom I cut hit up with on a promotion to the center of all things research, is actually at least one step behind me in progression terms. How the hell did that happen???  My whole self belief is based on my ineptitude. I can’t have people I’ve always considered my intellectual betters turning out to be less successful in career terms. It just doesn’t compute.

Some of us would like to stay up late, I can't remember the last time I saw 10pm, but have body clocks that wake us between 04:00 and 04:30 no matter how late we go to bed.  Short nights and the consequent mental fug are not conducive to producing good quality work in a job which requires a degree of alertness to be done properly.
