Rather more grand than my previous offerings. I came across this while looking for a picture of Dungannon Market Square in the National Archives in Kew.

"Entrance to Menai Suspension Bridge from Carnarvonshire" by  William Thomas Wright, 324 Stanley Road, Bootle, Lancs. Mr Wright filled in the copyright form on 29th October 1904.

PS Any deficiencies in what you see are down to me and not Mr Wright. I had to try and hold the print flat with one cotton-gloved hand and take the picture one-handed trying to avoid reflections from the ceiling lights.

The original Forth Bridge!

Unlike the young upstart of the Queensferry Crossing, which is the Fifth bridge (in terms of when built) to cross the Firth of Forth!  ;)

Rich pickings on the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal yesterday:

Panorama here: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/890/40790832724_c1537a1f12_o.jpg

This was just after a proper bridge. Unsure whether to file it under bridge or ford, but I assume it means the River Tame cannot be relied upon to stay within its banks around here!

This is the same bridge, seen from different sides. I like it as an example of people hearing only what they're expecting.

I dictionaried "balk" and got "a ridge of land left unploughed as a dividing line or through carelessness" as one of the definitions, which might make sense as there's a borough boundary in the adjacent field.
