That was unambiguously the best bit.

Odd Man Out

With The Third Man yesterday and two astonishing FA Cup results, it's been a highly entertaining couple of days!

Thor Ragnarok - wonderfully overblown and silly

IT - I was wondering when they were going to get to the second part of the story, when it ended and I realised it was a two-parter. Quite enjoyed it, even though it was pretty much a straight up remake of the previous version

... A planet of the apes thing - fuck me that was tedious!  Spun out way too long, and the only decent character there was Maurice the orang-utan.

You can never have too much of Orangutans ! ;D

Not a film but Altered Carbon on Netflix.

Overall, the best bit of sci-fi I've seen in a long time.

That's inspired me to buy the book, if not yet sign up to Netflix to watch the series!

You get a free month, so you can watch it and then bail out.

I watched a few episodes but it was a struggle - it felt like retread bits of a dozen other shows Frankensteined together.

Last night I watched a couple of episodes of Blue Planet II with the missus. Yes, the pics are great and the tech is wonderful, and it is nice to see D. Attenborough still alive & kicking, but the thumping dubbed-in sound effects were tiresome, as was the gushing commentary full of superlatives.  BP the First was much better.

Lady Bird

Lovely and funny. One of those films where it seems that not much actually happens but it captivates you none the less. Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalfe are both excellent.

BP II continues the fishy fighting, feeding & fucking. Last night we even had the bloody turtles crawling ashore to lay eggs by the light of the silvery moon. I tried hard but didn't manage to go to sleep. The buggers haven't even the grace to play "Goodbye and thanks for all the fish".

I've seen the first two episodes so far. I think I scored a full house in sci-fi tropes bingo within the first 30 minutes of the first episode. Total Recall, Blade Runner, Ghost In The Shell etc - all mined very heavily for 'inspiration', and no doubt plenty of others that don't come instantly to mind. But I guess if you like that kind of thing, you'll like Altered Carbon. And I have to admit that I am quite enjoying it so far.

Didn't say necessarily most original, just the best..

Alas if you're looking for originality, you're about 50 years too late!

It's not a criticism, just an observation. I am enjoying it so far.

The only real criticism that occurred to me is why someone as rich as Laurens Bancroft would settle for James Purefoy's "sleeve", but they addressed that in the second episode, the cunning weasels.

Yebbut Kingsman is essentially a knock-off of the 1960s Avengers, but it manages to be great fun.  Altered Carbon dra-a-a-a-a-a-gs, even the virtual torture scene.

Mind you, very often these days I'm finding myself thinking "it's just a bunch of actors. They must feel daft doing that stuff" even in films I've enjoyed in the past.

As a counterpoint to Mute (don't, it'll be one of the longer two hours of your life), I did quite enjoy Black Panther. It did kind of overdo some of the African stereotypes (because we all know that's all Africans do, dance around in masks and complain about the colonizers) but otherwise a worthy superhero romp. There's a lot of them now.

I'd hate to see the salary bill for Infinity War though.

yebbut Kingsman is a spoof...

FWIW I think we're all going to hell in a handcart. It's not going to be like Star Trek, or if it is, I suspect it will be we who are The Borg. Consider this Humanity's last Golden Age.

N.B., I think you'll find most forms of torture dra-a-a-a-a-g and are a bit repetitive... when it comes to VT, there will be no need for high end graphics...

I wondered if it was possible to project a guestimate for that, so hunted through Wikipedia for the release dates and budgets ...

I'm surprised how flat the budgets are over a decade of films, although the return is a bit random, albeit always very damned significant.

$14 billion box office, from a $3.4 billion budget (gross, where there's a choice).  I'm in the wrong industry !

It's just an A4 sheet of paper, nothing special.

Mission Impossible IV (Ghost Protocol).

It's a 6/10 competent entertaining action movie, with a lot of humour added by Mr Pegg*. So 8/10, and N loved it. A reminder that straight action movies (i.e. without humour or romance elements) are very rarely worth watching. This one had a nice balance, never got boring, or too serious, or too gory - and unlike some recent Bond movies, didn't suffer too-many-endings-itis.

The only other MI i've seen was II (seems about a billion years ago), which I don't recall being very interesting at all. I believe Simon Pegg is in IV, V and VI, so I'll probably watch those. Did the non-Pegg episodes have any humour to them? I'm not optimistic ...

It's got it's own thread, but I thought it was very very average and now as I'm re-reading the book, I'm changing that rating to poor.

In short..read the book instead.

If they cast him in the next one instead of that Cruise wallah I might watch it.

After watching "Going Clear" I refuse to watch any movie with Tom Cruise...even downloaded ones. Yeah, he's a good actor, but he's also one of the driving forces behind an evil cult.
