Meanwhile, in a Breton primary skool:

Mlle. la Teech: So children, can you tell us who the most experienced rider in today's break is?
Petit Jeannot: Miss, miss, please miss, it's Sylvain Chavanel, miss!
Mlle. la Teech: Very good, Jeannot, but how did you know?
Petit Jeannot: Because ITV4's answer to Bluntman and Chronic told us three times in ten minutes, miss!
Mlle. la Teech: And how mnay times has M. Chavanel been Time-Trial Champion of France?
Petit Jeannot: Five!  Six!  Lots!  He's definitely thirty-six though!

Mlle. la Teech: Very nearly Jeannot. But he's not thirty-six. He's thirty-six years of age.

Does this primary school just happen to be in Brittany or is the teaching through the medium of Breton? If the latter then M le Maire's translation of Jeannot 'le Petit Breton' is perhaps correct.

"Team BMC appear to be continuing their journey along the road".

O RLY?  I was expecting them to take to the fields, or maybe to complete the course in a flotilla of 12-metre yachts.

Are you interested in the cycling or just picking fault with the commentary?

I having a wild guess here, but I assume there is a volume control facility on whatever you are using to watch the TdF.

Did anyone else note that Paul Sherwen wasn't actually there at the commentary booth for yesterday's TTT or that's what I'm assuming because every time we saw a different team going through a time check point we got the PS quote about it all coming down to the last few km and word for word 'the last 2km'  ??? :o ???

Maybe he'd stepped out for a few hours to get some shopping or something....

I must admit I do enjoy the descriptions of the local scenery more than the race commentary, sorry but I'm weird that way!?!

If you don't believe poking fun at the commentary deficiencies is a valid pursuit, why are you wasting your time reading and replying on a thread devoted to said activity? ;)

Only just paid attention to this thread …

Favourite quote so far is (I think?) Paul with "testing positive for stupidity".

Most amusing name screwup is calling Rigoberto Uran "Roberto" - the guy goes by "Rigo" so it's not that difficult…

I, for one, enjoy their commentary, including any gaffs. Who wouldn't make mistakes in a commentary lasting 4-5 or 6 hours long. I couldn't do it.

I'm pretty sure that was Gary Imlach.  Paul doesn't generally do jokes, though his comment about les Anglophones on his first Tour drew a smile; something along the lines of "there were only three of us: me, Barry Hoban and Sean Kelly, and I'm not so sure about Sean".

Its not so much Paul and Phil's gaffs or mistakes, they are funny. Its their mangling of the language and their inability to speak in anything other than cliches and, especially Paul - CAPITAL bloody LETTERS.

"PHIL, WHAT YOU HAVE TO REALIZE HERE, IN THE SPORT OF PROFESSIONAL BIKE RACING, ......."

"WHEN TONY MARTIN GETS HIS BIG DIESEL V 8 ENGINE WHISTLING".

Yes, they are verbal props that people use but these two buggers have been doing the job for decades, you'd have hoped they would be able to refine it by now.

Just talk normally guys and don't make everything sound like one of Moses's ten commandments.

Have we had suitcases or diesel engines yet this year?  I noticed Sir Dave referred to "cobblestones" yesterday; David Millar nobly resisted that one.

Please can we have more David Millar, O wise production company?

Watching on NBC Sports right now, it seems that the Phil & Paul show is their (NBC's) own production, not ITV4's. Phil & Paul often refer to NBC, discuss events with NBC commentators here in the USA, and deliver sponsors' messages. Maybe obvious to some, but news to me!

I was just going to mention their US obligations.

I seem to have a memory from quite a few years ago of their commentary suddenly becoming substantially more contorted. Some said it was due to the fact that the extended coverage the Tour was then getting meant they were no longer able to provide distinct commentary for each country and their commentating style now had to incorporate all the requirements expected in the different markets at once.

I wonder if as time has gone by they have developed a style that streamlines their production process but that strikes some of our more delicate British ears as more and more bizarre.

It would be interesting to compare what I just watched with what you got in UK, but it definitely looked to me that NBC's is the native coverage. Every graphic was sponsored, and covered by Phil or Paul. Two-way banter between P&P and the US studio, and NBC guys on the ground at the finish, all suggest that this was their production.

It looks like ITV4's coverage is supplied by an outfit called Vsquared, but I imagine they just generate the Imlach/Boardman/Boulting/whoever material and editing together the highlights, with the race pictures coming from ASO and Messrs Liggett and Sherwen bolted on top.  Does the US coverage include the snippets from Jens Voigt?
