The Horsepower 200 & 100km
« on: 29 January, 2019, 08:24:22 pm »
This year's editions of the 200 & 100km Horsepower Audaxes are revving up ...

100km Brevet Populaire checked today and amended route sheet plus info onto the AUK website. I have added a new alternative [advisory] route back from Great Sampford via Bardfield - a quieter and prettier route than the B184 from Thaxted, which remains the official 'gritted' route in case of freezing conditions. There is still the laney route option from Thaxted, possible to use both ways if free from ice, but rather pot holed in places. Both alternatives add about 1.2km.

The 200 will certainly be advised of the new route, as it's a better way to Dunmow for full-value riders in the dark. Cafe at Snetterton is up to speed as well - we'll be doing a Helpers' Ride on Saturday 2nd March, if anyone else would like to ride then and help on 9th. If previous editions are anything to go by, then we'll be having a coffee and cake stop in Lavenham, the village shop or maybe the chippy in East Harling and then an afternoon second lunch binge at Wetherspoons in Newmarket. Finish at the Angel and Harp in Churchend.

There will be the first deployment of our ACME PBP Qualifier Stickers!

This is coming round quite quickly.   My longest road ride this year, so far, is 40 miles.

5 weeks, eh ?

Ta! I'll sample opinions nearer to 2nd March as to a starting time for the Helpers' Ride - last time, a late start to accommodate F & BHOOT, train assisted, I think.

9th March is a motorbike trackday at Snetterton this year

For the Helpers' Ride on Saturday 2nd, it's a car novice trackday, so Tyrrell's Restaurant will be open for our lunch stop  Helpers get treated by the organiser  :-* The bar is normally shut for trackdays, so it'll have to be the Golden Lion ['spoons] in Newmarket for our pub stop [pint, apple crumble n'custard for me ]

Any idea whether there's anything open on 23rd Feb?  I'll be heading off to Melton Mowbray on the 2nd ...
Lockdown lethargy. RRTY: wot's that? Can't remember if I'm on #8 or #9 ...

23rd Feb is a 'No Limits' trackday - ie not an MSV [circuit's owner] one. No Limits website says catering available - that's all, so short of phoning the catering manager, I'd reckon you'll be ok - might just be a burger van though!

Thanks, Tom — I'll make sure to get alt-pop in East Harling if necessary

If there's an event on there'll be someone in the main office, as well as the trackside HQ. They do have a rather nice rubber stamp, I seem to recall! Selfie by the gates will do as p-o-p.

Whenever I've been to Snetterton for a trackday the café/restaurant has always been open, both for MSV and private trackdays. I'd be very surprised if it was closed.

The only time I've been there it was v shut indeed.

Tom - might be able to do the helpers ride, will check with SWMBO (although I've already entered the main event - would that cover a helper's brevet?).

Yes, ta! I hope we'll have lots of helpers for the actual event - it's gonna be busy, what with folks qualifying for that French Ride ... I have two controllers for Lavenham [1st control] lined up, but extra help at start and finish will be needed - even if breakfast helpers go on to ride. Offspring stamping cards at Snetterton as per usual, is the plan.

^ Cheers tippers! We've four controllers out at Lavenham and Snetterton, and with you that's another four helpers at the start - should be about right. We'll need someone on standby for Snetterton, as Soupy isn't sure of his commitments on 9th yet.

Entries around the 120 mark at present, so there'll be two starts 15 minutes apart ... tbc.

You can put me down as a potential Snetterton standby, especially if the forecast is good ;-)

EDIT: You can put me down as a definite standby for Snetterton. It's a nice easy motorised run up there from Colchester so happy to go if needed.

I am planning to make the helpers ride on the 2nd march at TBD o'clock.

Happy to assist on the day at Snetterton, travelling by tin box, don't care about the weather - fits in with visiting family in Dereham and Watton.

I've sorted my ECE route and submitted it to extend the 100k HP.  I'm riding it on Sunday 24th so I can get my February RRtY tick and 24th consecutive month of randonneuring....just have to let the RRtY Secretary know to count it in Feb and not March when it comes around to validations....think he'll be okay with it as long as I buy him a pint!
There is a plan afoot to be back at the Angel and Harp for a Sunday lunchtime-ish refreshment before continuing with the final 60km of the day.

Will be available for helping duties on the 9th

Just one pint? The new RRtY Secretary must be a soft touch!

I can’t make the 9th, skiing in Switzerland, have a good ride everyone
You can’t just call time out and stroll on into the beach if you don’t like the way things are goin’.
