Problems with hip flexor
« on: 29 May, 2008, 04:21:14 pm »
On and off for the past few months I have experienced problems with my left hip flexor when running, not every time but about 80% of the time.  I am fine on the treadmill but off road and after about a mile the pain kicks in, especially on the hills.  I have received treatment and do all the relevant stretches.  I am considering seeking the advice of a specialist at the foot clinic, where they measure pressure, gait etc and if need be prescribe orthotics etc.

Does anyone else have any problems?

Mine get hellaciously stiff after about 9 miles (lucky I don't do that distance often); I tend to run hunched over like a Monty Python Gumby so the remedy's to be really upright.  The running boffins talk about running as if there's a string pulling up through the top of your head.  When I concentrate, it's not so bad.

A decent runner's gait analysis would show that sort of thing up.
It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

have had, and it's bloody sore.  Much sympathy.

I was taught some stretches at a party by a very cute swedish physio (with mrs mike watching, checking for funny business) and it fixed it quite quickly.   Her name was Trude, like the vet.  She used to work at the cambridge sports injury clinic which is very good (and free, at addenbrookes)

Thank you folks.  I think part of my problem is that I haven't been to see the Sport's Therapist for two weeks, he manages some really good stretches but I am unable to do them on my own as they involve (like Mike said) some very strange positions.  Massage is almost impossible as it is too deep in the groin.

I shall try being more upright Andy.

My left hip flexor started to play up on the BCM.  I dropped the nose of my saddle ever so slightly and hey presto, no more problems.
