Recommendations for a 200km permanent near Cheltenham in May
« on: 29 March, 2018, 10:27:35 am »
Hello,

Calendar 200's in May are looking a bit sparse within striking of my location (Cheltenham) so I am looking at doing a permanent to keep up my RRTY attempt.

Has anyone got any recommendations? My criteria are:

Close'ish to Cheltenham.
Nice controls in cafes where my bike will be relatively safe if secured with a light lock.
Interesting route.
Not bothered about AA points.

Thanks

Try Steve Poulton or Mark Rigby.

I was looking at these two organisers as likely sources of the route - I was hoping for recommendation for a particular route which someone had ridden, enjoyed and met my criteria.

Cheltenham Flyer, 2 x Cotswold Corker?

Steve has lots of permanents, and I'm sure he can give you a recommendation. Personally I would go for one that heads south and east of Cheltenham: it would be almost impossible not to find an interesting route around there.

Agreed. The Malven-Elgar-Dean is a grand ride. No AAAs but not flat either. :)

Thanks Manotea,

Have downloaded the route sheet and it looks interesting. Nine controls seems a lot for a 200 though (not that I need much excuse to stop anyway!). As a plus point the A46 runs just past my house  :)

Any other suggestions welcome

This is one of Steve's.....SP25

I've also done this one but I found the roads too busy

This one (SP34) looks ideal if you catch a SW wind

Cheltenham Flyer, 2 x Cotswold Corker?

Would twice around the Corker be allowed (in validated ride for RRtY purposes)?

Not sure. Just made a suggestion regarding distance. (Anyhow, I don't go in for points. I'm only
in it for the ride experience and to get some miles kms in my legs).

No, Corker is only a 100; twice would be 2x Corkers, lots of AAAs + sore legs.

I live just off the A46 in Lecky, so why don't you just email me or check out the Perms list. My Bristol Double Avon 200 is one of my favs (technically goes through Churchdown). Three versions of the Flyer, and more, N, S, E, & W.

I realise Corker is 100km which is why I asked about going round twice. I searched the AUK site for rules around covering the same ground on a 200km ride but couldn't find anything hence my question.

Do 4x Corkers and it fits my Spa Tour Combine 400. Ouch!

Thanks for the responses everyone - I will have a look through Steve's permanents to select a likely candidate  :)

Could do a lap clockwise then a lap anticlockwise but then it would be a DIY200 not a corker...

No! You ride any of my Perms C or AC, so would be 2 x Corker (if entered through me). Do not like the idea of route poaching! Have a better AAA 200 Cotswolds & Mendips Grimpeur Cheltenham<>Wells oval circuit with lots of memorable climbs/descents (and Controls to prove hilly passage).
Early May will be good for the Banbury Cross 200 or Glos & Worcs 200 with a call at Cricklade North Meadow to see the Snake Head Fritillaries (R Thames flooded to late Apr).
