London-Thorne 300 Perm Sat 5th July
« on: 16 May, 2008, 11:45:38 am »
This had been on and off pending Mseries' recovery but I'm going to have a dry run at it this year; following the 2005 LEL route, controls at

0   Cheshunt
66 Gamlingay
161 Bourne
227 Lincoln
301 Thorne

Start time negotiable but probably 0600-0700; entry on standard perm form. Accomodation at finish TBD.

A perfect warm-up for next year (not for me of course, once I've done this I can walk away from LEL for ever having done the top 400) ; any takers?

Martin (or anyone), as an alternative, would you be interested in joining me for the first half of Epsom-Lincoln-Epsom on the same date?

I'm toying with the idea of doing this 600km permanent rather than A Bridge Too Far on the same date, and would prefer to ride with company.

Hmmm.....   Must consult diary, but this looks tempting.  But I'm fairly certain I won't be riding at your speed, Martin.
;D  Andrij.  I pronounce you Complete and Utter GIT

I wouldn't count on that; I'll probably still be recovering from France, it will be a sociable group ride at an average 16-18kph if it happens  :)

However; It will be my only RRTY ride for July so I'm intending to finish, any packers will need to make arrangements as always, but as long as we are in time I'll ride at the slowest pace.

Ooh!  I like the sound of that.
My first 300km (last week) wasn't the best performance (~15.25kph) but I should be back on form by July.

Nah.  I don't want the unecessary hassle of getting to the other side of London when I can pootle 20km up the road and start in Epsom.

I'll probably be staying in London the night before so it makes no odds to me.

16 - 18kph ? oh come on, even I could do that after only 2 months of cycling since being unable to stand up. I still think July is too soon for me, I have been keeping this up my sleeve for September.

Please keep me appraised of the plans for this ride, I am toying with the idea of catching a train to Peterborough or Huntingdon and joining you for the last 200km. I don't want to ride home alone late at night, it's S. Yorks. remember, bandit country, so I will be interested to learn if you have a lodging for the evening afterwards.

Gah! This sounds like a great ride! However, I'm watching the mighty Maiden at Twickenham later that day - try as I might, I think the chances of completing a 300 and then getting back from Thorne to London by early evening are VERY slim.... have  a great ride though. I shall remain jealous the whole day!

Fret ye not scottlington, I am considering this route for September 08 and March 09 once I have some fitness.

has anyone got the link for the old route sheet? the AUK LEL page auto-directs to the 2009 page.

That sounds interesting. Could possibly do it both directions for a 6?

I love that ride

I might have got the wrong end of the stick, but I am under the impression that a fair chunk of the upper half of LEL is used for the 1000km ride that Lucy McTaggart is running out of Galashiels in August.

Epsom-Lincoln-Epsom is a proper 600km permanent.  Organised by Derek Monkhouse.  Assuming it's that ride you mean (and not Martin's 300 from North London to York).

Yes, that's what was running through what passes for my mind.

is there a 24 thingy in Thorne? can't even remember if it has a cash machine

I've noticed the route goes past Rosie's cafe; that'll be a thirsty control...

Yes there is a 24 hour garage in Thorne, I have not been there since it changed hands but the Arrow team was there. There is a cash machine in the wall of the co-op where we started T-E. Also Thorne services on the M18, late Tescos (11pm) in Hatfield/Hadfield. Rosies will be shut.
