[HAMR] March 5th
« on: 05 March, 2015, 02:33:51 am »
Unless there's a glitch, it would appear from the tracker and twitter that Steve has set off already, nearly 3 hours earlier than normal! :o

ETA: he might even be heading for a Gibbon.
You are in a maze of twisty flat droves, all alike.

85.4 miles from Marsh Gibbon

Interestingly, the tracker seems to have reset into "new-day mode" about half an hour after he started so it now looks like he started at the far side of Buckingham from MK.

10 miles done already by 3.40 am.  Possibly a huge day today?
I'm gonna limp to the pub and drink 'til the rest of me is as numb as my arse.

No Gibbon this morning but he is on his well-travelled route towards Highgrove.

03:40.  Jings and hoot ma boab. I woke up at 5 and thought It would be half an hour until Steve hit the road. Looking forward to today's total, given he is due a bigger than usual one if he is to keep comfortably above his optimistic schedule.

Just checked in over breakfast and astonished to see 42 miles on the clock already.  I guess he just woke up early and decided to get going.  Hope it doesn't take too much out of him.

Balloonist strategy.

Watch the weather forecast.
Take off when there's no wind.

Clever cyclists' strategy.

Watch the weather forecast.
Clear off early when there's no wind, and ride the wind home when it starts blowing.

I noticed that.  Is there a tracker problem?  Did he forget to turn it on?  What happened?
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

I think I remember somewhere that the tracker is set to switch at a new day at 3am, so even if Steve turned it on it would have started adding to yesterdays miles and then reset the chart when he reached 3am.  In which case he has done at least 10 more miles than the tracker is showing.  Do you think he will break new ground and head south from Malmesbury to Cirencester or revert to circuits of the Thames Valley Water Park?  My money is on a Gibbon on the way back.

My mind is just boggled! I am sat here, nursing a hangover, and Steve has already banged out ~60 miles!!!

We are most certainly not worthy.

GO STEVE!!!!!!!!!!

ETA he certainly has the weather for it today, 2degrees, no frost and no wind to speak of, so perfect day to set off early.

The term "Crazy Ivan" was borrowed from the Tom Clancy novel The Hunt for Red October, and is named for the maneuver performed by Soviet/Russian (hence "Ivan") submarine captains to check their baffles, an area directly behind a submarine's engines that cannot normally be monitored with sonar due to engine noise. This area creates a perfect hiding spot for enemy ships, thus the need to periodically spin around and "clear the baffles". The suddenness of the turn (hence "Crazy") is also a good deterrent against shadowing for extended periods of time, because it might result in a collision.

I'm none the wiser.

I'm doing a BP 100 on Saturday. Steve's knocked that off before I was even out of the shower :o

Around Cirencester and Malmesbury it certainly isn't that balmy. -3 degrees at 5am, I didn't go out because of the ice on the lanes. Admittedly there isn't any wind, but seriously chilly. Steve is a braver man than me.

Nice start of yet another day on his to be legendary quest! If Steve would get in a sudden 250+ mile day
it should be easy to see if Kurt does indeed follow Steve's distances!

Calendar has him in Dunmow tomorrow night .....is he going via Plymouth?

(and if you click on the calendar entry Google throws up a map centred on Gabon  ;) )

Go Steve!

Perhaps he'll spend the middle of the day riding up the Severn towards Tewkesbury to meet his routes around the North of the Cotswolds. Would have the wind behind him there while it's strongest today.
