[LEL17] Essential kit for LEL
« on: 07 January, 2017, 07:10:00 pm »
After my triumph of taking a golf umbrella round the last LEL I think we ought to share any accessories that we think are essential for any serious attempt at LEL.

Thankfully I found this:

Cast aside your competitive instincts! Share with your fellow randonneurs those rare finds that can make the difference between success and failure.

A small tin of Proofide. Apart from the necessity to protect Britain's finest saddles from derriere-debilitating deformation when subjected to the slightest precipitation (or indeed, Scotch mist), it also serves as an emergency chamois cream, an adequate moustache wax and a non-vegan but low-carb source of sustenance that can be carried in a pocket throughout LEL without staining one's wool jersey.

Young lady, that thread is totally different to the spirit of this thread. Virtually a foreign language in fact. Very disappointed.

Practicality has *no* place here!

I am aware of this. I have not suggested merging the threads, merely 'Compare and Contrast'...

Neoprene.  Should help keep them cold on the fenland hairdryer leg.

What does the rear of the cycle offer?  Hopefully a mini-bar with appropriate options, or maybe a kebab facility!

Might I also suggest the ring pulls are aligned as it would really annoy me!

I would strongly advise you to use brown valve caps, in order to match your bar tape.

I am wondering about liquorice-strap bar tape. Nice and squidgy, a useful emergency snack and a new meaning to 'chewing the bars'.

I have bought a secret device which is almost quite almost certainly-ish going to guarantee a successful ride. Sort of.

Photo later.

You might want to take your very own sun shade / rain cover with you.

I've got the deluxe version - solar panels to charge the Garmin and detachable to serve as a bus shelter..

I never knew Jack had one of those on his bike. At least I never noticed it whenever I rode with him.

I fixed one just under the seat on the recumbent for at least one LEL and a couple of PBPs. However the Pashley has the regal "Ding Dong" bell which does the job just as well.

He once told me that a couple of PBP bike scrutineers got distracted by his horn, both wanting a go with it, and didn't bother to check his dodgy brakes or lights.

I don't know whether it was a permanent fixture, or just came out for special occasions. I think you can just see the bulb behind his wrist on this photo from LEL in 2005.
